I have suffered from Hyperhidrosis since middle school. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably, particularly in the hands, feet, and armpits. I am one of the lucky ones who experiences increased and random sweating throughout my entire body, but true to the definition my hands, feet, and armpits are particularly bad.
I have tried various remedies throughout the years, always to no avail. Recently I heard about the MiraDry procedure, which has had wonderful reviews online and in clinical studies. MiraDry treats armpit sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) ONLY, it is not FDA approved to treat hands or feet, according to my Dr. because there is not enough fat in the hands and feet to make the procedure safe. Well after extensive research and saving money (it cost $2700USD) I signed up for the procedure.
I had my first treatment 2 weeks ago. From start to finish I was in the Doctors office for a good 2 1/2 hours, this is how procedure looked...
1. Doctor looked at my armpits, specifically at the hair line (they asked me to shave 2 days beforehand so the hair would be slightly growing back) to determine the size of the area to be treated.
2. A grid was placed on my armpit and alcohol soaked gauzes placed over it, leaving a tattoo on your armpit. The tattoo essentially shows the Dr. where to give the lidocaine injections and where to place the machine for treatment.
3. The lidocaine injections are given, around 30 injections in each armpit. This did not hurt as bad as expected, but I am good with needles and have a high pain tolerance.
4. The machine is placed on different spots if the armpit. It feels like a vacuum, sucking your skin until there is a secure grip and then nothing until the machine beeps to move on to the next spot on the tattoo grid. Random spots got very warm, which confirmed the necessity of so much lidocaine.
5. Procedure is done after that, but it is time consuming, at least 25 spots on each arm at 6-8 seconds or so a piece.
Afterwards.... I kept ice on them as I was told for several hours the first, second, and third day. The first day I had minimal swelling, the second day however was quite different. It felt as if I had tennis balls under my armpits, not comfortable but not painful... just annoying. By the third day the worst of the swelling had gone down and felt much more manageable.
Today...2 weeks later, swelling is gone. There are still some random spots, but for the most part gone. More importantly I have not worn deodorant since getting the procedure. My sweating has DRASTICALLY decreased (I'd say at least 90% reduction), almost to none at all. The results are too exciting to put in words and I still have one more treatment to go, which takes care of any left over spots still sweating.
This has changed my life. I am so excited about wearing colors, anything besides black which I safely stuck to beforehand. It is just amazing. If anyone has similar sweating issues and has thought about the MiraDry or tried other options with no luck, research the MiraDry procedure, it has truly CHANGED MY LIFE. |
