Hi all,
Long story short....I've got an upcoming beach trip with my boyfriend. I haven't gone swimming with anyone other than family in probably 10 years. I'm 29...but I have the legs/body of someone twice my age. Spider veins everywhere, cellulite, fat rolls. I eat pretty well and try to exercise as regularly as I can, but my body type adds pounds if I even look at sugar. I've also had three sessions of sclerotherapy but definitely need more.
I'm not concerned about being with him. He doesn't care about all of that stuff. But he's invited several of his (very attractive) friends. And I am just not comfortable wearing a swimsuit or even shorts in front of them.
I've considered backing out altogether but I know he would be really upset. How do I deal with this gracefully? |

I recommend a good sunless tanner and cute swimsuit with either a skirt or sheer wrap and an effervescent personality - focus on the others in the group and they won't notice your legs. |

When you say upcoming, how manys days/weeks are you talking about? If you have a few weeks, there are exercises you can do that will help reduce inches and cellulite. |

I'm leaving this week.
I've been working out pretty regularly for the past 6 months but I have taken the last month off because of work and the sclerotherapy treatments.
I have been using a gradual sunless tanner which looks ok indoors. The color is fine outside but the veins are so much more prominent in sunlight. And they are all up and down....not just on my thighs. |

I know you think you will be self-conscious, but its not about them its about having fun with your boo. Stay in the water a lot, wear a long sarong wrap when out of the water. Enjoy the day! And wear that sunscreen! apply after swimming and every hour while on the beach!

OMG, there are such beautiful coverups & wraps around these days which you can wear without any awkwardness at all until just before you get in the water and after! Not to mention maxi dresses which are very much in fashion these days.
Come on, even people with the most perfect bodies wear these just because they're absolutely gorgeous - just check out a few celeb pictures.
There's nothing at all to worry about! Play up the features you're most proud of (face, shoulders, arms, decollette etc with bronzers etc, - which again, EVERYONE is wearing this summer, & nice mani/pedi's) and no one will give anything else a second look. Honest!
Have a great time and keep your mind OFF of such worries. ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Wonderful advice. Play up the good stuff, hide the rest. Bronzey glitter for shoulders, arms, decolletage, and hands....
Love the wrap idea posted by Fawnie. Cute sun hat - yeah that's cool.
Find an excellent color in a manicure/pedicure combo...something that makes you feel good.
A great smile will win the day. Be all you can be and have fun.
Don't back out - go for it. |

You are all so sweet. The problem is, I'm more of a jeans and a t shirt kind of girl. I have very thin skin so even aside from the spiders, I have prominent blue veins all over my body. They are especially bad on my chest. And even though I am not very overweight, my neck has sagging, wrinkled skin. I never wear shorts and I very rarely wear dresses unless they are high necked and I can wear tights.
I'm just not comfortable with many people seeing any part of my body...I guess I should start convince him to go on something other than a beach vacation! |

Well, it is up to you, and that you feel comfortable on your vacation, is what is most important. I'm not comfortable with the beach either, mainly because I get dark quickly, and invariably hot & oily, so don't like that much sun on my body.
I still think that you can get away with coverups. There are netted ones that are see through, but no one would ever notice spider veins through them. You could wear a high necked/long sleeved net one with a sarong like the one pictured above & be fully covered, yet perfectly outfitted for the beach.
Certain maxi dresses are high necked, and for the most part come down to the ankles.
And no kidding, if a woman has a beautiful, glistening nail polish or piece of jewelry, or shimmering lip gloss or makeup in the sunshine or setting sun, (or even just one of those that really flatters) its extremely distracting from any flaws. All people think about is her love & healthy glow. And in the end that's all that really matters - those are things your boyfriend wants to be sharing/showing off to hie friends and the things everyone will remember.
Enjoy yourself, whatever you decide, but please consider these things for the future when you might be ready & have more time to prepare. There's no need to hide yourself and deny yourself comfort & fun.
And let us know how the vacation goes! |
