i think omega 3 (which i need to take more of), hyaluronic acid (doctor's best),possibly glisodin (just started), coQ 10 (ubiquinol i think is best), vitamin c

i'm not sure about resveratrol (so many different doses and types).

also i saw now wrinkle rescue at iherb with ingredients as below. i guess i was most wondering about dmae and carnosine.

If you want to do Resveratrol, 75 mg twice a day of ResVida (the product name) is supported by the literature to have significant benefits in humans:

Calorie Restriction-like Effects of 30 Days of Resveratrol Supplementation on Energy Metabolism and Metabolic Profile in Obese Humans

http://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/abstract/S1550-4131(11)00386-X

I don't know if it's absolutely the best resveratrol supplement out there, but it's certainly one of the best. HTH.

IMO any supplement routine should be tailored to the individual taking into consideration their diet, health issues, lifestyle, skincare needs, side effects, etc. Nothing you take orally is going exclusively to the skin so it should work double duty; if not use it topically. Providing you have a healthy diet most won't need vitamins or minerals, and it can be counterproductive to do so.

I take DHA & EPA (everything!), green tea (antioxidants & weight management), low MW hyaluronic acid (skin & joints). Cycle on and off probiotics (gut & immunity), CLA (weight management & skin) or milk thistle (antioxidants & liver). Have agreed with my GP to add cod liver oil.

Firefox, I agree with your point that a supplement can do double duty...helps the skin but also goes throughout the body! Pharmacist Suzy Cohen recommends hyaluronic acid because it helps firm and moisturize the skin, and also helps eye and joint health. I am a fan of NeoCell HA because its natural not lab made (that's sodium hyaluronate) I also like NeoCell's Super Collagen for skin..but it also helps joints and muscles.

Astaxanthin is another favorite supplement. Protects the skin from sun, makes the color of skin more attractive, takes out sun spots...and also helps any condition with "itis" at the end! Can improve eyesight, too.

Hi Firefox - You seem to have your ideas in order from a Nutritional standpoint. I don't know where you are from but GP's in US are not trained in nutrition as a part of curriculum and most doctors I know are no more informed than the average educated consumer. I get distressed when they try to use the education they have to promote Nutritional concepts to the unsuspecting average consumer.
Did you say in another forum you are taking HA from Source Naturals? I need HA for lots of joint issues and value your knowledge here. Thanks.

I've found that a quality green food(s) is the most valuable product. I am very much into Barley in the morning to alkalinize and also a product called Vitamineral Green and I also have Vitamineral Earth to cleanse and provide true nutrition. I've gotten very much away from the standard vitamin protocal.

Thanks for your replies, 7Destiny and Sistersweets! I had quite forgotten about the eyes and HA; I use Careprost and had irritation the first few weeks. This has almost gone with better application, and perhaps the HA has helped.

Doctors here in the UK do very little lifestyle counselling, it is a source of great frustration to those of us who work in lifestyle healthcare! Nutrition is part of my work role, and I love what being able to give something back to this community, so feel free to pick my brains. I will likely learn from you guys too as there is always new research to consider.

My starting point is always the official nutrition guidelines but tweaked for the individual and other research I am familiar with. I encourage protein little and often, low glycaemic index carbs - barley and pulses - and high intakes of fruit and veg in a rainbow of colours. The only supplement I routinely push for clients to take is fish body oils or marine algae, otherwise I prefer they eat wholefoods. Sometimes we discuss green tea, freeze-dried probiotics, 5-HTP, whey protein, HMB or creatine (last two sporting goals only). I am not qualified in herbal remedies, so have to be very careful with that when in uniform!

Yes I am experimenting with Source Naturals and do notice that it plumps my skin temporarily. Far too early to say what effect it has on ageing, I am hopeful it will promote new collagen alongside dermarolling and the Anti-ageing LightStim (on order! Very Happy )

Hi i take time perfection by imodeen i get them from a trusted ebay seller at half the price as here in the uk they sell in shops for around £43.00.I also take 2 solgar beta glucan capsules daily, 1000mg vitamin c daily and 1 probiotic from udos ,i also take pukkas clean greens powder which i find this amazing as i suffer from chronic fatigue .All these supplements help my skin with radiance but most importantly i take them for my health and immune system which does help .I work in a hospital so i am always up against viruses and bugs.I used to take green smoothies but i ended up with the helicobacter bacteria from the veg even though i used a special veg wash this caused me awful stomach issues ,i had to take a weeks course of heavy antibiotics which killed the bug but my stomach has never been the same.I just cant take heavy doses of fruit and veg now so the supplements are a must for me.I am also considering olive leaf extract as i have heard amazing things about this.xx

Marcia36: sorry if you know this already. Research suggests irritable bowel and related digestive complaints respond well to the combination of high dose DHA/ EPA and freeze-dried probiotics. Long chain omega-3s are also key in immune function and energy levels. Are you refrigerating your Udo's and dosing after food? Can you not tolerate fish body oils?

Yes fish body oils are AKA fish oils. I choose that term because often they are confused with cod liver oil which is a poor source of omega-3s. IIRC Udo's Choice oils are based on seed oils which supply short chain omega-3s. These are only converted in our bodies to the useable long chain format at a rate of ~10% so you need huge doses to make up for a deficiency. There are (vegetarian) marine algae supplements which supply long chain omega-3s, I have never used them so no idea how concentrated or digestible they are but that might be worth some research?

Another long shot ... the reason to take the probiotics after food is to stop digestive acids killing the bacteria. I wonder if the probiotics might be being affected by the enzyme supplement? It depends on the specificity of the enzymes of course, but at the end of the day bacteria are composed of the same macro-nutrients as food. However I do think tho your best chance is to add in some O-3 oils, as the combination is what the research supports. Perhaps just one high strength capsule stirred into a meal or snack, as often as you feel able to. *Hopefully* as your DHA and EPA levels increase your digestion will settle and you will slowly be able to tolerate more healthy fats. I take up to 6g of triple strength fish body oils daily supplying ~3g of EPA/ DHA: this is less than a tenth of the recommended daily intake of healthy fats for a female, so I am guessing you are deficient overall?

I hope you don't mind me interfering, I have had two close friends with chronic fatigue so have seen a little of what a debilitating illness it can be. With my background I also appreciate the knock on effects of not being able to eat well or take physical activity. Crying or Very sad

Hi firefox thank you for that info and no i dont think you are interfering at all its all very helpfull.I am going to give the fish oils another go and take them with food and also start taking the probiotic after food to see if that makes a difference.I never had problems with my stomach until i started the green smoothies .I felt i was doing my health good by all the veg and fruits but it didnt work out well for me.My chronic fatiuge started when i had glandular fever 10 years ago and the fatigue has never left me but i do work through it .I still work but have to take things easy if i overdo any sort of excersise it can put me in bed for a few days.In saying that i do pilates every second day without fail on my pilates machine so that really makes a difference and my job im on my feet moving around a lot so i do as much as i can.I just cant go running or any heavy cardio as that would make me ill like a feeling of having the flu.So supplements are a big deal for me and i always source the best ones.Thank you againxx

Great information Foxfire for all of us! Maria36 so glad you using your pilates machine, is it the aeropilates? I have been a pilates fan with the machine for about 15yrs. Within the last year I switched to Zumba classes and although I love them, they are not the total workout and toning that I get with pilates. Jan. 1,2012 I am back 100% with my pilates and so happy!(Sorry for the side track but pilates can firm the entire body including the neck!) Laughing

Hi toby yes it is the aero pilates but i dont do the cardio board much as i take days to recover after using it as my fatigue gets bad after any form of cardio. But i do the strenghth training on it and have used the machine for years on and off but have really stuck with it since june last year every second day and it has totally changed my figure .Like you say nothing tones you up the way the pilates does.I couldnt do without it.Talking about the neck toby i work in the hospital and i was talking to a dermatoligist and i asked him about my neck ,he looked at me as if i was mad and said i have a great neck and said he thinks i am focusing in on the scars from the acne i had when i was younger but he said they are hardly noticable and that i should be proud of my skin as it looks pretty perfect to him.So maybe all the stuff im doing works after all and maybe the neck problem i think i have is something i have made worse in my mind because i spend all my time focusing on it.Anyway like you say pilates is the best xx

There are a lot of good reviews on iherb for something called neocell, super collagen. I'd love to hear any experiences before ordering anything!

musettarose, I know what you mean there are over 600 reviews on iherb for NeoCell Super Collagen, I just checked! I have been taking it for three years and its one of my must have supplements. It firms and raises the skin, and also helps your joints function smoothly and pain free.

Its the loss of collagen, that starts in our 20's, that begins the wrinkles and sagging. NeoCell Collagen puts the collagen back in our system. Oprah gave me the tip.

Oh cool - I didn't know Oprah commented on Neocell Collagen. I use it also. For me I've found it helps my knees and a broken wrist of many years back. Hoping maybe the face too eh!

You can take it once a day! Just before bed is great but morning works too. I noticed benefits the first week, but then skin just kept getting better. What I noticed first was skin holding moisture better, sleeping better, and increased range of motion.

I take Ray and Terry's total care formula (futurist Ray Kurzweil's supplements) and looking at the ingredients it has 100% or more of the recommended "skin" supplements. Every time I hear of a new skin nutrient I should be taking I check the website for the ingredients of this multi and it's invariably there in sufficient quantity if you take the recommended 6 pills a day.

Just thought you all might want to investigate since if might allow you to save money by getting the ingredients in one pill.

For me, I noticed a definite improvement in certain health markets when I started taking R&T's multi. Nothing miraculous but I stopped bruising so much and my energy is slightly improved. My cholesterol is better than it's ever been, but I attribute that to the fish oil pills I take.

I've also just begun taking fish collagen w/hyaluronic acid and lecithin granules. We'll see if either of these do anything.

Astaxanthin, definitly.

I haven't been using sunscreen all summer and my hyperpigmentation didn't darken at all (of course I keep my face out of the sun as much as possible).

I must add that I live in a northern European climate so I "can get away" with not wearing sunscreen most of the time.

I'd like to know how everyone is doing with the Neocell Collagen. Any weight gain? Any lifting to the skin?
