30 year old female here. I've been reading from multiple forums lately and this seems to have the most intelligent people so I registered here. Please help.
I'm having a crisis from using 10% glycolic acid. Not that strong and since I haven't had any problems with it in the past few months (getting ready for a wedding soon) last Sunday I used it twice in one day by slathering it on.. big mistake. It burnt like hades the 2nd time but I left it on for about 10 minutes figuring that that must be the burn that other people talk about when using higher strength AHAs. It almost made me tear up.. stupid in hindsight.
I washed it with cold water for about 10 minutes after I realized it was more serious than first thought.. It was oozing in a few areas on my cheeks for an hour afterwards and had red bumps that are about 70% gone 6 days later but what's worrying me is that it also discolored my skin (made it whiter than my normal white skin) in those areas around my cheek, I guess because the skin there is more sensitive and because I rubbed it on there more for the nasolabial folds which weren't even bad before but now look horrendous.
So I know the red dots are going away, not worried about those. But in those areas that turned white (large area of both cheeks) the pores are also really large like an orange peel and it's even worse around the nasolabial folds where they stick out and the lines are raised, making them even more prominent.
Will the orange peel, huge pores, white, raised skin go away? What is it exactly? Inflammation? Did I burn off the top layer of skin? At first I freaked out that it was a 3rd degree burn because it turned white but it still blanches when I touch it and have feeling in the areas so my nerves are still working. But aside from the red dots going away my skin hasn't gotten any better in 6 days. I'm scared that I ruined my face and that it won't return to normal, or at least before the wedding in a few weeks.
I've been eating right with plenty of foods with vitamins like C, keeping hydrated, avoiding sunlight/using sunscreen religiously (taking vitD supplement), limiting alcohol and caffeine way more than before and exercising more. Topically I started with Neosporin and Burn Gel but then read that antiseptics slow burn healing as long as it isn't an open wound so switched to Quantum Derma Scar reducing herbal cream which looks good to me but starting today based on info from this site I've switched to a combination of raw hemp oil, Carave and aloe mixed in the palm of hand 3 or 4 times a day after washing with cool water.
What happened to me? What can I do about it? Any advice will be helpful. Thanks so much! |

Gosh... maybe you should go to the doctor? he/she might have some suggestions. Honestly I think you're doing all of the right things - I hate to say this (and I'm no expert at all), but I think it will just take time for your skin to recover.
And a silicone scar gel might help, if only to protect the skin a bit. |

Hi village cat.
Dont worry! Skin regenerates. It grows all the time!
It sounds as though you have burned yourself. I think the best thing to do is let the area heal and do its own thing for a good while. I would use emu oil and/ or calendula cream or ointment topically to give the cream some calming and healing time.
You will know a lot more in a few weeks or a month, as to how your skin is responding to the healing and calming.
I'm really sorry you had a shock. Its so easy to go overboard and get over zealous isnt it, and it never really pays off! |

Thanks for the replies. Made me feel a little better. Yeah, I got overzealous trying to look perfect for the wedding and I really hope it clears up.. was starting to think my skin was indestructible because I've never had any problems with facial peels before.. *sigh* Definitely learned my lesson that I will remember forever (but hopefully not see on my face!). Thankfully stores don't sell higher strength AHAs or TCAs because I surely would've bought those and maybe have a situation even worse.
The next few weeks will be full of research and lifestyle changes.
I've also read that lavendar and helichrysum essential oils are excellent for healing skin so I've been mixing a drop occasionally with the other topical creams.
Anybody have any experience with those? |

They are both lovely oils that really help the skin. I have used them both a lot.
What it is, is that you want the skin to normalise NOW, because you have the wedding coming. But the fact is that it will take a little time.
If your skin is not too sensitive to the oils, I think its a lovely idea.. natural has to a good way to go.
Borage oil is a good nutritious base for those essential oils, if you dont use Emu.
And of course rosehip oil is just great.
Barefoot Botanicals SOS cream is excellent.
