I'm trying to get to the bottom of this.
The original LLLT phototherapy research was with lasers. Then LEDs came and made phototherapy affordable. But very few LLLT researchers accepted LED as comparable or even effective.
Then NASA studied LEDs and said they work better. But to be honest, hundreds of studies from many different sources say lasers are more effective. This includes for collagen production, increased ATP, acne healing, etc. The NASA researcher was granted the patent to sell the specific LED units (Warp 10) which is a conflict of interest.
However now I see almost only LED devices and very few laser units for personal use. One obvious reason is lasers scare people and perhaps there is some liability but LLLT means "low level laser" which is as weak as LEDs and perfectly safe.
I did hear rumours that lasers can reduce subcutaneous fat and so should not be used on the face, but many of the "laserlipo" fat reducing devices are actually using LEDs to melt fat.
I know for hairloss, LEDs are almost useless and lasers work.
I use a Raymax laser cluster on my skin and it does seem to help refine texture and prevent breakouts. For optimal benefit the key identified with most research is to get the correct amount of exposure... around 6 joules/cm2. This can take forever with LED.
Is anyone else using a laser based personal LLLT device like the SL-50 or Raymax for phototherapy? Has anyone used both and care to compare? |
