I have a lot of hyperpigmentation showing up on my face lately (I went to a dermatologist and they're all benign). Some of them are a bit raised and look like tiny raised freckles, and some are just completely flat birthmark-looking dark spots. Is there any way to get rid of either? |

Wart remover (it is 17% salycitic acid) - I would just try a few applications ie. apply, let dry, reapply in a day or two, maybe one more time.
Just try this on ONE spot to see if it works for your condition and doesn't leave a scar for you.
This worked for me on a very dark spot so near my eye PS was reluctant to laser or IPL. And it is cheap!
Thanks, Chery! |

Thanks, Chery! I will try this on the raised ones. Does IPL usually help for birthmarks/raised hyperpigmentation?
Any other suggestions? Seriously, you guys, my face is getting more and more "freckled" (except those aren't freckles but look like birthmarks) every day. I'm 28 now and it's getting worse all the time. I kid you not, I probably have around 40 little hyperpigmentation spots on my face. This is insane!
I have not been as religious with my sunscreen as I should have been and obviously that will change this summer. But what do I do to get rid of the already existing ones? |

Penta, apart from treating the issue cosmetically, it might be worth looking at your nutritional status, upping your intake of vit c and your mineral intake and adding a green drink into your daily routine. |

Okay, thanks, catski. I do eat quite well. I never knew hyperpigmentation etc could be connected to nutrition. |

Yes, I know.. I was a bit dismayed when I found out.. and then I realised it really is true ' you are what you eat' and we pay heavy price for not eating and drinking optimally.
I think msm and glutathione supplements are apparently good for pigmentation alleviation. |

Thanks, catski. I'll be making even more of an effort to eat right and add green smoothies. Oh my, the struggle ever ends. |

It wouldn't really get rid of the moles that are already there, though, would it? |

You can try Hydroquinone(either RX or OTC) or any number of natural lighteners(which you can mix):Vitamin C,licorice extract, bearberry,Alpha Arbutin.Exfoliation will also help.Sunscreen is mandatory, year round and even in the house or you're just chasing your tail.Oh,and Retin A or Retinol will also help. |

Yeah, I definitely agree about the sunscreen. I'm always worried about breaking out but I really need to start using sunscreen religiously.
Does anyone know anything about laser treatments?
In another thread LauraLizzie mentioned the 540 IPL for brown pigment. Does anyone have any experience with that? The areas that bother me most are a few slightly raised light brown freckles/moles on my cheeks. I'm very worried about scarring (especially because the areas are in the middle of my face) so I'd love to hear from other people. |

I have battled pigmentation/freckles all my life. Everyone is different, but what has worked for me is...TCA peels (either professional or DIY) mineral (zinc) sunscreen, reducing chemicals/additives in my diet, Candela GentleLase laser (not IPL).
What hasn't worked...IPL, vitamin C, retin A, Hydroquinone.

If you have continuing pigmentation issues (like if you are a redhead, or freckly) a home laser is a very good investment. For the cost of a few professional treatments, you will have a device that will improve your skin in so many ways and it is VERY effective for removing pigmented lesions. PM me if you would like photographic evidence. |

Hey guys, I'm half Asian half European, so my skin type is a bit strange. I don't burn easily, tan super quickly and deep but I'm "freckling" like crazy. Acutally, not even sure how to call these. I have two mole-like raised brown spots on my cheek, freckles, and also completely flat birthmark looking spots everywhere. I'd definitely be interested in trying out a laser.
mismis, what laser are you referring to?
Rebecca, how much does Candela GentleLaser cost and how many treatments did it take? I will look into it some more when I have a minute. |

Wouldn't she be a good candidate for the Obagi Nu Derm system? |

I've heard a lot about Obagi but I was hoping for a relatively "easy solution" (if such a thing exists in skin care). As my concern is mainly raised moles/freckles and birthmarks, I thought maybe there would be a good laser for that. |

Don't know if this is suitable for moles, but for pigmented lesions you can use wart remover (it is 17% salicylic acid), let each coat fall off before recoating. I have literaly had spots "fall" off my face from areas that were too near the eye for IPL or laser. I know this works for freckles and small actinic keratosis.
Don't pick at it, that could make a scar, and of course if there are a lot of lesions, the little white spots aren't going to look good. But for the occasional spot, fine. Cheap, too! |

mismis, I actually have one of those near my eye that's been bugging me! So does it just get flatter and flatter each time one layer flakes off? That seems ideal as I'm really paranoid about scarring and would love that kind of control. |

Try the dermapen! There is a nice big thread in the DIY section.
For a spot under the eye, gently pull the skin down. The dermapen is one of the few devices or products you can use right up under the lash line. |

Is dermapen good at getting rid of pigmentation?
I personally have found it brings out hidden layers of pigmentation, surfaces them. |

Yes it does help with hyperpigmentation. It bring things up and out. But it is a process and not a one shot magic wand (unfortunately). I would guess you need more treatments to get the clearance you want. |

Yes, so with surfacing what lies in lower dermal layers,it is possible that one may have to go through a considerable ugly phase! As I have done, in fact.
Rolling does result in excess pigmentation issue for some people.
Reaura is finally bringing the issue I experienced to a close. |

Penta, all of these things may work, but I do hope you have had these lesions looked over by a doctor first - I have had precancerous lesions myself, and sometimes it is just not worth the risk.
If you do try the wart remover, may I suggest just try it on one inconspicuous spot first time.
If you decide on the other methods, I can attest that an investment in a home laser or derma pen is a good one in my experience.
Best, M |
