I've been slacking off at work for the past few days and reading all of the posts I can possibly find for this topic! Everyone seems so nice and well informed; I've been looking forward to posting for awhile. Even after reading literally thousands of posts on this topic, I've found some debate about a couple of issues.
I should begin by saying that I'm 42 and my skin is quite sundamaged after years of tanning in my teens and twenties (discoloration/wrinkles). About 5 years ago, my dermatologist started me on tretinoin .025%. It wasn't helping much with my melasma, so I began using the Obagi Blender along with it at night and had awesome results. Unfortunately, I went through a couple of years where I couldn't afford either product anymore, and I discountinued use of both, and my face has returned basically to the state it was in before I started the treatment. I'm financially able to begin using the tretinoin/Blender combination now, and need some advice/encouragement.
I applied only the Tretinoin (derm upped it to .05%)last Wednesday and Thursday nights, and my skin is not just flaky, but red and raw, with a small area close to my mouth that almost looks like a chemical burn. And I haven't even begun to add the Blender yet! These are my questions for the experts:
1. Even with the rawness, do I need to apply the combination every night, or do I need to take days off in between to heal, or would that even make a difference? If I do wait several days between applications, will I have to continue past 18 weeks to see the full resorts? I really don't care how long I need to continue the program as long as I eventually get results.
2. I know I'm not supposed to use a moisturizer and the Blender/tretinoin at the same time together, but is it okay to use moisturizer during the day?
3. If it's not okay to use moisturizer at anytime durning the process at all, would any of the following be options?:
-hydrocortisone cream
-jojoba oil
-emu oil
-diaper rash cream (I got some Weleda)
I'm so sorry this post is so long, but I'm very enthusiastic about getting my skin close to where it was, and have been doing a ton of research. Can't wait to hear from you, ladies! |

Hi babyinez and welcome!
If you haven't used tretinoin for a couple of years and have now started with a stronger one, perhaps that's too much.
If your skin is raw now, that's definitely a sign to back off and let it heal and perhaps use one of the creams or oils you mentioned to help that process.
Perhaps go back to your derm and ask about going back to the 0.025 for a while, using it no more than a couple of times a week to get used to it again before adding Blender to it.
When your skin has healed and you have built up your tolerance again to the products, you ideally shouldn't use a moisturiser with them.
Good luck and I'm sure others will add their advice. |

Tefla, thank you so much! I called my derm's office yesterday afternoon, and they called in a prescription for the .025% for me. I'll be picking it up this evening. Like I said, I'm extremely motivated about this! If you think of anything else I might need to know, please let me know. Thanks again! |

I'm happy if it helps. I know I have learnt so much from these ladies and gentlemen here, especially about Obagi.
Let us know how you get on. |
