Now that I have your attention, scroll down to the last photo - her false eyelashes are coming away from the corner of her eyes!!!

Keliu,
I understand your frustration. There is a lot of deception out there--and not just with cosmetics.
One thing that has helped me, though, is improving my understanding of science (namely chemistry & botany). Understanding how chemicals work and which ingredients do what helps me better gauge whether certain products can actually live up to their claims. To this end, Google Books has an invaluable resource.
Another suggestion is use to use Google Discussion function or Twitter Search's feature |

Yessss I totally get sick of it but its also morbidly fascinating somehow to see just how naive advertisers think we are. Like we dont know their tricks and never heard of le Photoshop? |

I swear I buy every new mascara that comes out - I still haven't learnt my lesson! What I love most is that they now manufacture the wands in glorious technicolour and package them separately from the mascara. Someone should tell them that when you stick the wand in the mascara - it turns black!!! ![Laughing](images/smiles/lol.gif) |

Mascara's come a long way since the old Maybelline cake mascara that I used to play with at my cousins' house. |

We have to know that a photograph near a mascara wand for sale is a visual stimulus only, not a depiction of the product in action.
The same goes for all make up and skincare adverts.
It isnt so much false advertising as the nature of marketing itself.
Watching the series Mad Men was interesting from this point of view..working out campaigns of how to sell washing powder..they knew saying "it gets dirt out, so buy it" wouldnt work.
So they create children nurtured by delightful soft towels etc..
We really have to be savvy about marketing..how would it be if a mascara came and was advertised like this :"makes your eyelashes more noticeable."
It isnt going to happen.
But that is all that mascara does.

I wonder to what extent marketing affects us.. if we were bombarded with images of beautiful women with sparse eyelashes for a long time.. how quickly would we adapt to that new norm?
Unfortunately it wont happen cos nobody will make any money out of it. |

I've noticed that they are showing more wrinkles on ads using older celebs -- Julia Roberts, Andie McDowell, Diane Keaton -- but still photoshop most of the imperfections. |

We may all know that marketing photographs are deceptive - but that doesn't make it ok. It is false advertising. If the qualities of a mascara are being sold by a photograph of a model wearing false eyelashes - that's fraudulent. I know that none of us believe the images we see now, they're all photoshopped - but when it's this blatant, it's outrageous. |

Its all photoshop! and it seems to be so acceptable. Almost as tho we *want* to believe ...
This is not to diss Cate Blanchett, who is a beauty and a fine actor, but the reality and the SK-II ad doesnt match:

Fawnie - how about posting that great ad with Madonna and the jar of "Photoshop" (if you've still got it). |

heheh this one Keliu??
Altho U know what? Madge has sparkling blue eyes in person, so I think that the right side of that photo has been shopped in reverse (to make her look worse). << could be she wears colored contacts tho.. Who knows.. |

Keliu, no I dont think its ok, either. I think its positively toxic to falsify and mislead so habitually and extensively.
It means that we are habituated into lack of trust, because we know we are being lied to.
At the same time, on some level, we are brainwashed by the lies ...and expect ourselves to resemble the images that we see. We have conflicting responses of, as adults, intellectually knowing we are being duped, and we are disapointed on some more child like emotional level, that we arent getting what we were shown.
The legislation that allows this type of advertising in no way serves the consumer. |

Catski - you know what - I think we all know that products don't deliver what they promise. We know that most of the claims are biologically impossible and we know that the photos are photoshopped. But we want to buy into a dream - it's quite sad really. And what's even worse is the perceived premise (by some) that the more expensive the product is, the better it will be. |

Its not anything new. How old is the concept of "Hope in a Jar"? Philosophy (brand name) didnt invent it. Altho there are some ingredients out there (not saying Philosophy brand has them tho) that really do work.
All mascara has to do is make the lashes look darker and fuller really. |

I think the nonphotoshopped Madonna looks fantastic. Her skin looks great. And it was heartening to see that her concealer creases just like ours! ![Bad Grin](images/smiles/badgrin.gif) |

On the whole, no, not if it is trying to sell you something.
It 'd be better if we considered it all a game, rather than took it seriously. They want to get what is in our pocket's into theirs.. it's what you expect if ever you go to a Souk or any kind of bargaining shopping experience like that, where you'll get graciously given a a cup of mint tea, shamelessly hoodwinked, flattered, and time wasted, and imagine you are being canny, but doubtless still get ripped off... For some reason, with 'fixed prices'in fixed shops, and ads in magazines and all that shabang, we imagine some integrity must be on the scene somewhere.. I really dunno why.. it's just marketing, just the same. |

I agree except I dont think it's sad we all want the dream, I find it touching that we still have the glint in the eye that maybe there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, after all.
I think of all my lipsticks and concealers and those kind of things that breed in my make up drawer as my toys.
Anyhow, I have a similar large and shapeless collection of tights, shoes, reading glasses and scarves. Each one has been bought to jazz me up somehow, in mood and look. ![Rolling Eyes](images/smiles/rolleyes.gif) |
