I'm just dipping my toes into the diy arena for lotions/potions and surprisingly with all my reading and internet browsing I haven't landed on the best method to clean your storage jars or bottles. Is it okay to just wash and dry them with dish-washing detergent and then swish with some form of alcohol to sterilize?
And most of what I see offered on the DIY ingredient sites are small jars. I have always understood that creams purchased in jars is a bad idea because of potential for bacterial growth from sticking your fingers into the product and for the reduction in efficacy due to exposure to oxygen.
Should I be looking for airless bottles that are opaque only or am I making this harder than it really needs to be? |

I usually clean mine in the dishwasher or with hot soapy water. Sometimes I rinse with alcohol, but not always. It's a good practice though.
I much prefer airless pump containers. You can wrap some foil or duct tape around them if you need to protect them from light. It's hard to find opaque airless pumps. I've been known to reuse good containers from products I've purchased as well. |
