Triming Eyelashes to make them grow

Can anyone vouch that trimming one's eyelashes helps to make them grow thicker/longer?

I wouldn't try that. It may also be really difficult to make them look even and natural.

I've never heard of such a thing, but that doesn't mean anything!
I would be terrified to trim my eyelashes. Can this be done professionally?

if you want them to grow just use Jan Marini eyelash intervention or revitalash and or Lush Lash by carekate.All of these make lashes grow very long.

I saw my aunt does this to her son and it does do the magic, the baby eye lashes are much longer... no chemical product used!

Trimming lashes may make them appear fuller similar to the way getting a haircut will make hair look fuller and healthy, but I dont think its possible that it would cause them to grow longer. Hair is programed to only grow a certain length, die and fall out when ready. The same basic principal would seem to apply to all body hair. True it varies person to person, Im always amazed when women can grow their hair to the floor and I struggle to get mine past my shoulders.

Lash serums seem to help grow lashes longer and fuller but Im not sold on the safety of them quite yet and frankly wont spend that kind of cash on lashes, my advice would be to simply invest in a brilliant mascara.

I agree with Vonstella. Cutting the ends of your lashes will have no impact on how quickly/long they grow. They can only grow a certain length before they fall out.

I agree with the consensus that trimming lashes will not make them grow longer...I also agree that it's not something I would try to do myself at home, even if the concept had merit. I get nervous enough when I have to pluck a rogue eyelash with the tweezers if it's irritating my eyeball, so I can't imagine I'd be able to hold a pair of scissors steady!

I also concur that body hair (head-hair, lashes, etc.) is programmed to grow only a certain length and there is nothing that can be done to alter that genetically-coded measurement.

HOWEVER...

There are things you can do to make sure that your hair grows to its entire pre-determined length, such as keeping it nourished and moisturized.

We know that if we abuse our hair (chemical processing, excessive heat styling), that can impact how quickly it grows and/or how healthy it appears. The same is true if our eyelashes are abused by wearing drying mascaras (especially water-proof formulas) and/or using harsh makeup removers, or -- in my particular case -- tinting them too often. If you use a conditioner and protein treatments on your hair on a regular basis, then you'll notice that your hair appears shiny and healthier.

Our diet can also affect how quickly our hair (and nails) grow so those that take nutritional supplements containing building-blocks that make up hair and nails will suddenly notice a marked increase in how quickly their hair/nails grow. This is because the hair/nails are finally getting concentrated nutrition they need to "be all they can be."

Obviously I believe wholeheartedly in the results one can achieve from using lash growth serums like JM and others, or even a product like Ardell. I've been using these growth serums (some of which are effective, most of which are a waste of $$$) for several years and have seen first-hand the results.

My point is that while it's true that our hair-length is genetically pre-determined and even if we provided our hair/lashes their maximum nutrition, they'll never grow beyond that point. But that DOES NOT mean that the lash-length you are stuck with today reflects the maximum potential that your lashes are supposed to be (and the same is true for your head-hair)....

When I was about 9 or 10, I tried trimming my lashes to see if they would grow in longer. They didn't, and they just looked incredibly dumb and blunt-cut and weird when I did it! As CareKate mentioned in another thread, we all have fine blonde tips at the end of our lashes, and the lash hairs naturally graduate to a fine point. Removing this finer, lighter tip made the lashes look very, very weird and unnatural, and they didn't grow in any longer. So I have firsthand experience thumbing this down, haha. Sorry to disappoint, but hope this helps!

Oh, and by the way, I've been using a tube of Ardell that Carrie sent me, and it's surprisingly effective! It's making my brows come in much quicker than they had before, and it's helping the overplucked areas fill in nicely. So definitely try giving one of the serums a try - I thought a growth serum would be totally pointless until I tried one! THANKS Carrie! Smile

I wouldn't want to get a pair of scissors close enough to my eyeballs, what if I were to sneeze at the same time I'm trimming my lashes, ouch! Shock

Umm, isn't castor oil supposed to be a relatively natural and inexpensive way to promote additional hair growth?

I actually have to trim my eyelashes as they get really long, especially the bottom ones, they look so weird with mascara on so I've started to trim them......... very carefully with little scissors. Whether that is making them longer or not I don't know. hmm

P.S. Just make sure it's cold-pressed castor oil...the kind you find at the supermarket or drugstore in the laxative aisle doesn't contain the necessary nutrients (it won't harm your lashes, but it won't give them the same results, either).

Are you now (or have you ever) used one of the "big" growth serums (JMAIE or RL) or any oral supplements to grow hair -- or are you just one of those ladies that we all secretly envy with a perfect "fan" of fluttering lashes?! Oh, to have been so blessed at birth... Confused

...actually, you ARE really fortunate because God typically only bestows those kind of lashes on small children and (undeserving/unappreciatve) men! Laughing

Umm, when I was 11 years old and bored in summer - I took a pair of scissors to my eyelashes - they grew back super quick and thick and long. I did it again and again - I wasn't trying to grow my lashes, I was just bored. I cut them as close to my eyelid as I could. At first they grew back thick and longer, until the 4th time or so. Each time I cut the lashes it seem it did not grow back as quickly as before. At about the 5/6 th time an older girl noticed my stump of eyelashes and commented upon it. I was so embarrassed I never did it again. But that last time my eyelashes did not grow back as long as before. Question

So if you want cut them to amke them grow longer do it when you are very young and don't keep doing it. Bad Grin

My untreated lashes are about 8 mm and with treatment about 10-11 mm. My eyebrow hairs are about 10-11 mm untreated and I wonder if I hadn't abused my eyelashes when I was young if they would be just as long.

I guess we're never satisfied as I hate having them so long! They're fine without makeup but with mascara I just look like I've got tranny lashes on! Wink

I did use Talika and JMAIE a while back but only on the top to try to bush them out. As a teenager I used vaseline on my lashes all the time, not sure if using those items has made them freakily long or whether they're just naturally long.

I know what you mean sarahb! My lashes are naturally pretty long too and when I used to wear glasses they would rub and smear up on the inside - not an attractive look! My lower lashes are kind of sparse though - the lashes I have are long, but I have a few bald spots where I pulled them out when I was younger and they never grew back (not on purpose, it was from when my eyeliner would smudge on them and I'd pull on them to try to get it off!). I tried the Talika gel but it made my eyes sting so I've kind of given up on them now - these days I tend not to wear any eyeliner on my lower lids and hope no-one notices Embarassed

Nah, it doesn't work. When I was a wee girl, my mom used to trim my eyelashes (and those of my siblings) in an effort to make them grow longer but there was no noticeable effect.

Now RevitaLash is another story...

Yes!

Trimming ur eyelashes helps to grow alittle.
Many cosmetics counter girls do that.

U just trim it very very very little, barely touching it.
It actually makes ur lashes grow out 2, 3 times the length u cut out.

Applying eye cream on ur lashes too, will help ur lashes grow abit too.

Excuse me? I wouldn't be doing that. Trimming hair of any kind will not make it grow faster.

Hmmm, like Moocheez, I did it as a bored teen also. DONT DO IT. Shock

Even if it did grow back thicker, you look hideous in the interim. I also used to apply vaseline, that is easier.
Lastly, I have been using RL for the last 2 months, and was about to tell everyone what compliments I have been getting - until just catching up on posts that seem to indicate it may be dangerous!!! Now I have to toss up vanity vs safety Rolling Eyes

. I would really like like to try the Lushlash everyone talks about!
