NOOOOOOO! haven't caught up, just stuck in a rut! I am transcribing interviews at the moment, so it's nothing too taxing, but, god I feel frazzled! I don't think I'm gonna go for a PhD!
My dissertation is on the social exclusion of students with learning difficulties by their peers in a mainstream setting. It has a specific focus on the social construction of learning difficulties. CINDI!Wake up!
If any one else on the forum has an interest in this area, please PM me ...may inspire me!

Hi guapagirl,
I am SO interested in the topic of your dissertation! Where are you studying? Learning difficulties has been I topic I have been interested in for some time now, especially, as you say, the social construction of a learning difficulty or disability. How is the difficulty measured and against what? I am a learning disabled adult who is also a college professor. I was lucky that I channeled my ambition into art and used pictures to express what I could not express with words. I have been interested in the question of artists and learning difficulties; do artists, in general, tend to be learning disabled or are students with learning difficulties attracted to art because they feel more comfortable to expresses themselves by means of visual media? Please continue with your dissertation! I would love to discuss this topic in greater depth with you. How cool is this; a love of skin care products and a discussion on learning difficulties! Sometimes the internet really rocks!
My best to you, Joani |

joani...
I never thought I'd be typing this on a skincare site butttt.....laughing
Your post really caught my attention. You may already be familiar with his work, but Lawrence Kubie has a short book called The Neurotic Distortion of the Creative Process - you might find it interesting if you can pick it up at the library.
He contends that society at large really doesn't cope well with creative people or people with certain learning disabilities and that, as a result, we tend to expect eccentricity from creative people....
I'm not doing a great job of explaining it here, but it's not an easy piece to abstract. Although, it is surely an interesting one! |

Hi Katee,
Thank you for the recommendation. I have not read, "The Neurotic Distortion of the Creative Process" but I do have it on my bookshelf. I will give it a look. It is one of those books about which I say to myself ..."you really should be reading this instead of writing on the cool skin care site you found"!!!
But, posting here has its benefits as we have learned.
I teach at a large university and the thought to "expect eccentricity from creative people" is so true. Since I am one of only three art professors on campus, I am "the odd one". Well, at least I'm a very cool dresser and know my designer skin care! As for my learning disability, no one on campus knows that I have one. I wonder if they would be surprised? We all have many unique ways of learning and processing information. Thanks so much for your reply! Joani |

LOL! I'm studying at Camborne which is part of Plymouth University. (Harry Hill voice:)'now what are the chances of not one, but three people having an interest in learning difficulties AND stuff to put on faces, eh?'
It is an interesting question about learning difficulties and the connection to art. I went to school with Damian Hirst and I am pretty sure that if he was at school now, he would be labelled as having learning difficulties. I suspect that either having a rebellious outlook or what is deemed 'problem behavior' is often the result of unchannelled creativity but because it challenges society's norms, it is nullified by claiming that it is the result of an individual's 'learning difficulties'. I think most people with an interest in the subject will know the way society has treated so labelled people in the past and this, I think, is a direct result of dehumanising such people. I was horrified this week when a student at the school where I work, refered to the girl I work with as a 'freak'
Anyhow, I really MUST do some work
