I'm devastated  I know that this is going to sound vain and ridiculous...but I'm going to continue because I'm desperate for comfort I cannot look in the mirror and I'm hoping that *someone* out there relates so that I don't feel so alone!! Guess what I did?? I decided to cut my own hair...**Pudoodles cringes as all the Forum members kill themselves laughing** -- I know, I know..."what the H*LL were you thinking, you moron?!"....I don't know....My hair used to be all one length - well past my shoulders...I decided to give myself bangs --- but I MORE than cut them too short -- I cut them so short that I look like an escaped mental patient!!! Note to self: NEVER cut bangs when your hair is wet! My bangs "shrunk" when dried and now I look like Jim Carrey from the movie, "Dumb and Dumber"!!!... Not some, but ALL of my colleagues at work killed themselves laughing...Someone even took a picture of me with her digital camera - to capture it... It's so bad, it's funny I'm wearing my hair in a ponytail...and I'm trying to pin my "escaped killer" bangs back so that my hair looks like it's all the same length..but it all just keeps popping out.... Has anyone else out there done something to their hair that they desperately regret?

Awww, we all do things to our hair that we end up regretting. Also remember that the initial reaction to a hair cut is the most extreme one. Just pop in to a hair dresser and have them re-style it if you really can't live with it the way it is.
I once had a perm that made me look like a poodle. It was the first perm I ever had and it stayed in my hair for absolute ages. My hair hasn't been the same since. It used to be glossy and all the hairdressers used to go ga-ga over it. Now they just tell me what products I should get to deal with the problems I have  I also went blonde at some stage, not only did it make me look completely washed out, my hair was so dry and brittle that I ended up cutting it all off and going short. If only I could turn back time..... |

 Pudoodles, you poor thing I used to cut my hair all the time when I was a kid. Bangs where my favorite clippings  . My dolls also had to deal with my hidden hairdresser abilities. My Barbies looked like punk rockers.
I have not screwed up my hair recently. A few years ago my stylist must have been having a bad day. She cut my (already short) hair so short that I couldn't blow it dry with the smallest round brush. I looked like a boy with a crew cut.
Now the question is what do you do?? You can use a little styling products to hold you bangs back so it looks like you don't even have them. What about some type of head band? In a few weeks they will look fine.
Sounds like you are really upset but your post did give me a good laugh. |

oh, I really feel for you  I too have just ruined my hair. I tried to save money by highlighting it myself. I used tin foil and it kept moving and sliding down. I ended up with big blotches of colour. I couldn't leave it like that so I just bleached the whole thing (with highlighting solution ) My hair basically melted in parts, I had to get A lot cut off. Also it is basically white now. Not What I intended.  |

| Thank you Mabsy, Winnie and Petu -- I sincerely appreciate hearing from you! I wish I could go to the hair dresser and get my bangs "blended" but they'd have to chop my hair off all round my face..then I'd have a "mullet" or "Wayne's World" hair I'm just going to try to tack it down with bobbypins and hairspray...the real disaster is that I have this big meeting on Monday and I'm getting this flipping award thing at the dinner in the evening..and I look like an escaped mental patient.....there's no saving me....I'm going to be the entertainment for the night!! |

Pudoodles, sorry about your hair trauma. I've had hairdressers laugh at me when I've come in to have my hair trimmed after I botched it with the tiny scissors from my swiss army knife.  These days I have real barber shears and I've gotten pretty adept at cutting my fringe but the rest I just grab in two bunches and chop an inch into the trash bin from time to time. We're heading up to Florida later this month and I'll probably have time to get into a salon for a real trim.
Jim Carrey's hair in Dumb and Dumber is bad but it could have been worse, you could have given yourself his do from Ace Ventura!

mmmmm...I wasn't sure how short the lovely jim's fringe was in that film...I expected it to be a lot shorter than that though! I have to say that a couple of months ago I was in the shower and needed to cut my fringe. being a little worse for wear it it ended up really short one side and longer on the other. Naturally I had to straighten it out and this time it went the other way so I look like this... >: ) ...except I wasn't smiling. Clearly I had to cut it straight and this time I managed it except my fringe was now 1" long I went into work nad the immediate reaction from one person was OMG you look like dave hill!

| Dave Hill?! Talk about a flashback for me! My Nana was from Scotland and she used to send me Beano books and Scottish mags when I was a kid...I remember Slade from way back when - and Gary Glitter, too! I WISH my hair looked like Betti Page's -- unfortunately I look like an ad for how NOT to cut your hair like Betti Page's..she's a bombshell! I think you have to have a lot of moxy to carry off that kind of a look...those bangs are pure va-va-va-voom whereas I look more like va-va-va- NOT! |

Can you point-cut them to make them more whispy? You know, cut into them with the point of your shears parallel to the length of the hair shaft? This will break up the bulkiness of your bang and soften it's look. Well, maybe you should just go to a stylist and have them do it. A bang trim even at a good salon is only like $15
Or, have them clip your hair real short & choppy like Sharon Stone, go out & buy all new clothes, shoes & makeup. Tie a G&B scarf around your neck & work the look sweetie!

| Just read this -- I've done the same stupid thing myself in the past! A hairdresser friend told me a foolproof way to trim bangs is to grab the hair and twist it, holding it down in front of the nose. Then cut it right below the bottom of the eyes if you want the bangs to end at your eyebrows. I've never had the nerve to take another whack at it though, so good luck to anyone who follows this advise. In the meantime, I'd use a good gel to keep your bangs off your face, and comb them back so they disappear, like Winnie said. In fact, I have long hair and generally wear it in a pony tail or updo/twist, and couldn't live without gel to keep wisps and fly-aways in place. Hairspray won't do the job. Actually, NOW would be a good time to try a really short haircut (if you have the nerve!). Every year, I tell myself I should try a look like Sharon Stone because I'm too old to have long, straight hair. When my face gets too droopy, I'll try it. Until then, a pony tail is like an instant facelift. |

I am very sorry to hear about your hair. Let me tell you - we all have our fair share of disasters. I remember having this perm, couldn't stand the look and went home to wash it off immediately. Boy, if the "before wash" look was not nice, the after wash look was horrific!! I turned into a gollywog - mushroom shaped but frizzy - or imagine a round short ball of cotton candy ringed around my thin face. OMG!!
Can I suggest you visit a hair stylist before your important day and see if they can style if differently? If you don't like it, you can always count on gel and pins again. I understand it when you say you just do not want to cut off the rest...there's just that much our frail vain hearts can take at a time...
But, I do think the suggestion to get it wispy is a good one - keep the length but make it wispy - at least it should soften the look a little. Also, I suggest you enhance your brows and lashes a little more - imagine Liz Taylor in Cleopatra - she did't look silly with a short and straight fringe cos she had clear dark brows and eyes. That should help too.
It's OK, the hair will grow. It's relatively anyway - this beauty thing. Now that you are at the DOWNSIDE, think about how much you would have to look forward to on the UPSIDE. Most people at their peak can only look forward to sliding down...As for you and me, we can look forward to the upside...(Am I making sense here?)

Oh, one more suggestion:
You can get a little delicate pretty "diamond" pin for your fringe - I think it will look sweet with your ponytail.
