I'm wondering if Coconut oil or Coconut Milk is best used to Thicken hair? Anyone have any suggestions on a good hair thickening product that's not too expensive? |

Biosil/Viviscal might be something to think about
Before trying either, though, check out the many threads about them. See below:

Like any other product, results may vary from person to person. |

I like the Living Proof Thickening Mousse, but am also using the Folligen for Blondes for increased hair growth. |

What makes my hair unbelievably thicker is rosemary shampoo. The one I use is Urtekram organic rosemary shampoo. I accidentally stumbled upon it (i was visiting my aunt who has a great hair and borrowed the shampoo I found in her bathroom) and I'm using it ever since. My hair gets oily easily and it's mild enough to be used on a daily basis.
I plan to start adding rosemary essential oils to my hair masks as well. |

Agatha, That sounds interesting!! Do you know where I can get it and how much it costs? Also, what kind of conditioner do you use afterwards? |

Coconut oil is best to thicken hair. Save the coconut milk for cooking. |

What about taking a coconut extract? I have just added it to my supplements but too soon to tell anything. |

How do I use the coconut oil? I assume I put it in my hair but for how long? And do I rinse it out? What about the Coconut extract? Is that something you take by mouth or put in your hair? |

I have HUGE capsules that I take orally. Easy to swallow though, surprisingly. |

Agatha,
Do you find it makes hair actually grow or just temporarily thickens it?
Thx |

It's Danish brand, and I order it from the German sites I'm in the UK). I know that some Amazon sells some Urtekram shampoos, check if they have a rosemary one (I tried other ones as well, nettle and aloe but they didn't work so well). The rosemary one is labeled "for thin hair" and it does work for me.
And I don't any use any conditioner, I just apply a few drops of moroccan oil and it works wonderfully! Little amount untangles my hair and doesn't make it oily. It's more expensive than average conditioner, but the bottle lasts much longer.

I really don't know - the difference I see is in the thickness of my ponytail. Even my hairdresser commented that my hair has improved.
But I think you need to know what is the cause of your hair thinning. In my case, I damaged my scalp with long term use of Pantene Pro V shampoo, even though I was only using it once a week. My scalp gland started producing too much oil ever since, my hair started shedding and became brittle and thin. My scalp was also very itchy, especially right after I would wash my hair. I went to several dermatologists, they inspected my scalp with Wood lamp to test for fungal infections but all tests came back negative. I checked my hormones (irregular thyroid in particular can cause hair problems) but they were all fine. I tried every prescription shampoo to regulate this oil production, but to no avail. My dermatologist wanted me to start with accutane, but I was a bit afraid of side effects (sun sensitivity in particular, since it was summer at the time) so I postponed this treatment for a while and in the meantime I found this shampoo. My scalp calmed down, my hair still gets oily but not so much as before.
So my advice to you is to first do the blood work to check if everything is okay. And stay away from aggressive shampoos ! |

I have been told by my chiropractor that I need to have my thyroid checked because he thinks I run too warm and assumes that may be the issue(I have been a warm person since I can remember). I don't think I have many of the characteristics that point to over active thyroid, I'm not tired I'm not fuzzy in the head or sleepy during the day...but I may go ahead and get levels checked because my hair sheds like crazy! Thanks for the info Agatha.
I used to use a rosemary shampoo by-I think- Avalon Organics...that sounds right. It was nice and I moved on to a newer 'better' shampoo and now I find myself wanting to find some more of that. |

I just found a good candidate : Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Shampoo by (Beauty Without Cruelty)BWC
Seems to have quite favorable reviews and I don't think I'll mind paying $13 to try it out. I'll let y'all know what I think if I pick some up. I wonder if the tea tree ingredient is good for thinning hair...
And Happy New Year all! |

Thanks everyone! Im already on Synthroid so it can't be that. Although, I think I'm headed into early menopause. My estrogen levels are really low. I used to take bio identical hormones but they made no difference in the consistency of my hair. They just made me crazy and really fat! I gained 15 lbs within the first 2 months of starting them!
Anyway, maybe I'll try some rosemary shampoo. I ve tried Aveeda's rosemary shampoo and it did nothing. Has anyone tried Frederic Fekkai full volume shampoo and conditioner? I love that one and they really work! They're just really expensive! |

I am adding silk amino acids to my shampoo and conditioner and it adds volume to my hair. I absolutely love it. It made a big difference. I told about it and gave samples to my friends, hairdresser and coworkers and everyone really likes it.
I buy it from http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/silk-amino-acids-p-555.html.
Hope it helps. |

John masters makes a great rosemary shampoo & conditioner. His volumizing tonic is effective for volume and body. |

Is this shampoo only available in Europe? If available in the US can you give the name of the distributor as nothing came up when I googled it. Thanks in advance. |

Hi Doba - how are you using this. How much do you add to the shampoo..and does it give more volume than your shampoo alone? many thanks |

Obviously, I'm not Doba but on the link she gave, it says usage is 2-5% ...

As a curly girl, I have issues with protein in shampoo and conditioner -- I have to keep it well balanced with moisture. Sometimes my hair wants one, other times only the other. Too much protein will make my hair feel brittle.
Anyway, I buy protein from Sally Beauty Supply in a little squirt bottle and add a bit to my conditioner on days when I feel like my hair needs it (when it starts feeling too mushy and limp). I think they also have silk protein ... |

Anyone know of a good mousse or gel that adds thickness to long curly hair? My hair doesn't
Seem to hold any product for long. Not sure why that is? |

I've tried a number of things on my hair, and these are the ones that work:
1. Biosil - get it! I would not live without it now. I have to trim my fingernails twice a week! And my hair grows like crazy - it's longer now than it's been for years. It usually grows very slowly.
2. Rosemary - this is really good for your scalp. So is peppermint! Whether or not it causes hair to grow, I don't know. It sure does smell good and feels stimulating. One theory I've heard is that helps hair to grow because it kills demodex mites that might cause hair loss. Supposedly everyone has demodex. I don't! I use Rosemary! LOL
3. Epsom salts - I made a solution from this and water with a few drops of rosemary and peppermint in it and poured it over my head after my shower. Made my hair stiff as a stick, but I would wash it out in the morning and used conditioner. My hair seemed thicker. The reason I used epsom salts is because of the sulfur in them - regular sulfur was way too strong and stinks!
The Biosil did the most for me, though. I've been taking it about six months, and in addition to the length of my hair increasing, I also have new hair growing in all over my head. (I can tell it's new because the strands are only about 4-5 inches long.) My eyelashes grew too, even after I stopped using Careprost I still had bottom eyelashes! |
