I was wondering if anyone was taking this. I don't have acne anymore but still very interesting.......
http://beautyeditor.ca/2010/09/02/the-single-best-product-evah-for-your-skin-is-not-in-fact-an-actual-skincare-product/

It’s something you ingest.

I’m talking about cod liver oil. Again. Yep—lately, not a week goes by without me telling at least a couple of people (mostly in the comments here) about this best-kept beauty secret. So in case you missed all of that chit-chat… listen up, because this stuff is downright MIRACULOUS for acne and dull skin. AND your overall health (including boosting vitamin D levels).

And you thought I was going to say fish oil, or probiotics!

Nein and nein—it’s this bad boy right here that you need:

The thread came just at the right time.

I've been thinking of reintroducing cod liver oil to my diet because it has so much vitamin a, vitamin d, EPA, and DHA.

I also heard that it's good for the skin. Has anyone here observed a change in their skin after taking cod liver oil?

Oh I wonder if this is true. I have terrible trouble with my skin (hormonal acne mostly) and I'm forever trying to find something to magically make my skin lovely.

I've taken this in the past and never saw improvement in my acne. Its now under control but cod liver oil was not a factor.

By all means take coid liver oil for the vitamin D if your multi does not cover that, but cod liver oil is generally not a good source of long chain omega-3s. Ideally you would be consuming 2-3g of DHA and EPA per day which with many/ most brands of CLO would leave you overdosing on A and D. These fat soluble vitamins can build up in the body to toxic levels.

From where are you getting this information?

Experts recommend getting around 500 mg of EPA/DHA for overall health. The only people who need 2-3 grams of DHA/EPA are those with medical conditions, such as high triglyceride levels and heart disease. In fact, taking high doses of DHA/EPA could cause problems with vitamin E absorption and blood clotting.

See emboldened, two different ends of the same spectrum. Definitions of optimum and high doses vary. Presumably you are already aware of the importance of the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in the diet, and the disparity in the average Western diet.

Weston A Price seemed to think cod liver oil was the end-all be-all supplement:
http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil/clo-number-one-superfood

Cod Liver Oil, the Number One Superfood

Doctor Price was right, as usual. Cod liver oil is very good for you, more than you ever knew. Research studies ranging from 1918-2001 give cod liver oil an A+ rating. This marvelous golden oil contains large amounts of elongated omega-3 fatty acids, preformed vitamin A and the sunlight vitamin D, essential nutrients that are hard to obtain in sufficient amounts in the modern diet. Samples may also naturally contain small amounts of the important bone- and blood-maintainer vitamin K.

Topically applied, cod liver oil contributes to faster wound healing and improvement in skin quality.39 An excellent treatment for diaper rash and other skin conditions is cod liver oil mixed with zinc oxide. And cod liver oil taken orally helps maintain soft skin and minimize wrinkles.

Cod liver oil seems like pretty cool stuff.

There are several types of cod liver oil:

You can get it with low vitamin A but high vitamin D (Carlson comes to mind.)

You can get it with low vitamins A and D (Spectrum Naturals, Barleans, and Nordic Naturals come to mind)

You can get it with added vitamin D (Nordic Naturals makes one called Artic-D and I think that 7 seas makes one)

You can get plain, old-fashioned cod liver oil with nothing added or taken away (Twinlab and Sonne)

There are other brands, such as Nature’s Answers, Kirkman Labs, Scott's Emulsion, Bluebonnet, and Garden of Life.

VitaCost.com and iHerb seem to have the most selection.

Here’s the 7 seas cod liver oil link: http://www.seven-seas.com/products/seven-seas/pure-cod-liver-oil-liquid-170ml

I've seen a lot mentioned about long chain omega-3s. Is it mainly omega 3 we should take as a supplement or should we include 6 and 9.
I don't have the greatest diet not a massive fan of fish but am trying.
I've seen people reporting hairloss from is it 9? don't want that to happen

From what I read, Americans already get enough omega 6 and 9. Omega 3 is what our diets tend to lack.

Fish oil and algae are rich sources of omega 3.

If you are looking for Omega 3s Barleans just came out with a Key lime flavored oil. I'm addicted to it!

You can get the Vitamin A you need from a multi. You can overdose on Vitamin A which can cause sight problems and blindness. Vitamin D3 is the better source of Vitamin D and can be had pretty cheaply and in small softgel form (less than pea sized).

Don't forget there is now Omega 7 coming to the foreground. I've read just a little, but apparently we need a balanced ratio of omega 3-6-7-9. That's why there are a lot of Seabuckthorn supplements on the market. Apparently they are a source of all 4 oils plus full complex Vitamin E and 41 carotenoids. Very impressive!! However the Seabuckthorn Oil must be specially extracted. I think they call it super critical extraction or something like that.

That is also just one person's opinion, I agree with leelee we need a balance of all omega's in our diet.

You can get a lot more Omega 7's from Macadamia nut oil than with Seabuckthorn. Smile Just switched to Mac oil and was on Seabuckthorn capsules. (Different Omega's have different health effects. I personally find a need for extra Omega 7's) I agree you need a balance of all omegas and fats. People emphasise Omega 3's too much in my opinion. Generalizing that everyone's diet is too high in Omega 6's, but I don't think that's a safe generalization. I've had many health problems occur due to me believing that generalization applied to me (When I ate incredibly healthy.) Be cautious and think about your diet. Not everyone eats only crap, ya know? And don't forget that you need some Omega 6's too. Again, balance. Too much of anything won't end up well. I know from personal experience. Plus you have to take people's size into account regarding dosages. I'm a small person at 5'1.5 and 105-110 lbs. So always be careful and remember more isn't always better. Always get several opinions (Your Doctor, a Dietitian, etc.) Everyone is different and requires different things. Fish oil/omega 3's/fish are great, but so are lots of other things like green tea and berries. Just like dark chocolate is good for you, doesn't mean you should go eat 10 bars of it. Laughing Be wise and think before you act. I wish I'd have realized that. Always seek more opinions than your own or what you read. Many heads are better than one. Smile And whenever in doubt, you can't go wrong eating the real food vs. the supplement of it! Smile I find much benefit with fish oil and I take it and have for years, but you don't need bucketfuls of it for benefits.

No, come on, it's BS.
