I was just wondering if anybody has any good natural common cold remedies? I've tried Lemsip but I'm still feeling tired and like I'm coming down with something. When I was a kid my mum used to make this thing from onion and sugar but I'd rather not go there Basically, it was a cut up onion in a glass and heaps of sugar on top. You were supposed to leave it for a day or two and then all the juice came out and this is what you had to take. I have no idea if that worked (or the theory behind it) but it seemed to be quite popular. Another memory that I have that I would rather repress, is being forced to drink warm milk (I don't like milk to begin with) with some butter and cut up garlic in it. It was dis-gus-ting! Not sure if it worked either but even if it did I wouldn't make myself go through it again
Until I hear of better remedies I'm going to have a bath and I'm taking a glass/bottle of port with me |

I don’t know if this qualifies as something you’d take for the ‘common cold,’ but I recommend taking an herbal supplement called Echinacea or a combo herbal supplement of Echinacea and Goldenseal, available in the vitamin/nutritional supplement section of most pharmacies or supermarkets. If you can’t find it there, try your local health food store. Echinacea boosts the immune system and overall lung health and is especially good for people who suffer from seasonal allergies.
My mom has severe respitory problems that have caused her to build up an immunity to nearly all antibiotics available today (yes, I know doctors aren’t prescribing them anymore like they used to, but if they don’t give them to my mom, she could literally die from her next cold because her body just can’t fight the viruses anymore). Anyway, she gets an upper respitory infection about every six weeks but since I discovered Echinacea and started buying it for her to take, 85% of the time she is able to get over the infection by herself without having to get antibiotics. As far as I’m concerned, Echinacea is a miracle herb that has saved my mom’s life!
I’ve also heard that taking (oral) Zinc supplements is good to stave off a cold, or at least cut the duration of the cold in half. And, of course, the old standby: Vitamin C.

I've been taking a zinc supplement for about 4 years and since I've been taking it I have only had 2 colds in those 4 years. Also, the only reason I caught those colds was because I had run out of my zinc tablets and wasn't quick enough to buy some more in. My Mum is always catching colds (she'd have the sniffles every 3-4 months) and so I started her off on the zinc tablets. Touch wood, she's not had a cold for almost a year. |

Like Carrie, I recommend Echinacea. Take a double dose of Echinacea at the very first symptom of a cold and within 24 hours all symptoms disappear. |

When I have a cold I take a lot of vitamin C, I drink tons of water and orange juice, and I eat very very lightly. It isn't exactly a cure, but it really cuts down on the time!! |

Since, I have moderate to severe asthma, I was getting colds all the time and when I got them, they were pretty bad.
I've run the gamut of natural cold remedies and preventatives for years. And yes Echinacea is very helpful as a preventative and also once you have one. Alot of people are combining it in formulas woth Elderberry and this is what I've been using too..and sucessfully. Also the Vitamin C and the zinc tabs are great, at first signs or after exposure to someone sick but they truly help to cut down the severity of a cold and the length of time it lasts.
Propolis has helped me in the past at the first signs and for many years the homeopatic remedy from Boiron Occillicoccium take at first sign but really no good once you get a cold.
But my new FAVORITE, is the Yin Chiao which is a Chinese remedy taken a first sign of a cold or flu. Has made my entire fall & winter cold free where my track record was more like carekate's mom. I am so happy.

Hi Mabsy,
I know that you will not like it but believe me , garlic is the best. You have a choice, to smell like garlic and be healthy or ...to combat the smell of garlic with something else
And, a lot of lemon(two pcs), sliced very thin, with some honey on top, and tea, and water.
I am almost vegetarian, but like today, I have had two slices of bread with two cloves of garlic and some olive oil(Sounds )I will brush my teeth several times till I go to bed, but I do love the taste of garlic.I hated a half hour later but ... |

Hello,
Garlic works wonders, it is supposed to boost one's immunity system and ward off bacteria. I have noticed that my cuts heal quicker when I eat lots and lots of garlic.. too bad for my family!!
I read in a health magazine yesterday that the Vitamin C is a myth; Vitamin E is actually a better supplement to take to ward off colds. Anyone else have thoughts on this? |

Echinacea and zinc sound like the way to go in terms of pill-popping. I'm going to head off and get some, I think there are actually tablets with both of these in there (called Cold-Ease or something like that) but I have tried them in the past without much success. Perhaps this is more of a preventative thing rather than a fast cure? I'm steering clear of garlic, I have a few hours of meetings tomorrow and I don't want to smell like garlic :s
I actually got a lemon this morning and I'm doing the tea, with lemon and honey thing
Thanks for all the tips. The port didn't work too well on the cold but it sure was fun to try |

You know they have garlic supplements that you take orally, right? There is no order or bad breath, either! My dad has been taking it for years and he used to make me take it too. When garlic pills first came out, they'd give you terrible indigestion shortly after taking them, but the technology has advanced in the last 20 years, so now taking garlic supplements is pretty painless all around. But I still love my homemade marinara heavily laden with garlic and some nice crusty garlic bread!!! |

Yes, I do know that there are garlic pills.I used them ten years ago when I was in Italy
I do belive in natural thing, GARLIC in his form even I hate the taste in my mouth after I eat it
I am taking other suppliments, like Omega3, Ca+Mg+vit D and ....I think it is enough.
I do everything for my health and skin and even I have to deal with a bad taste for a bit it is OK. |

I had heard that although your breath won't smell of garlic after ingesting the pills, in the summer your sweat will have a garlic aroma. |

Hmmm...I don’t remember my sweat smelling garlicky back when I was taking the garlic capsules and I used to sweat quite a lot back then (i.e.: ran 26 miles per day, swam 10,000 meters, performed 500 situps/crunches, etc, etc.), but maybe I just didn’t notice myself?? The only thing I recall was the belching with lovely garlic aftertaste!! Although, as I said, the garlic pill technology has advanced far since 1983!! If it’s true about garlic sweat, I wonder why we never saw anything like that on an episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”?! |

I didn't even think about garlic tablets! I think I might have to get some. This weekend overall is the start of my "exercise and eat healthy" regime. I hope I last longer than last time! |

you're right freckles.. vitamin E is pretty good for practically anything but especially skin problems.. good for getting rid of stretch marks, scars etc. try having a hot bath with a couple of drops of lavender in it.. or tea tree oil. |
