Hi,
I just got a pretty large cystic pimple on my cheek that I need to get rid of ASAP. I've been on Retin-A for about 6 weeks now and am just breaking out on it again.
So my question is this: should I continue putting Retin-A on the pimple, or should I try something else specifically for acne like Queen Helene Mint Julepe Masque or Mario Badescu drying lotion.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks. |

Hi WaveMaker,
Depending on how sensitive your skin is I would continue the Retin-A and put some drying lotion directly on the spot. Are you using Retin-A Micro? It's much better than the regular Retin-A cream. Any Retin-A product makes your skin worse before it gets better. I think it's worth the trouble. I don't use it anymore but when I was younger it was great from my skin. Good luck, Joani |

Thanks for the advice, Joani. I am using Retin-A micro -- the .04%. My skin was getting better and then this week (my 5th or 6th week I think) my right cheek area just broke out really badly. I'm going to stick with it, but I'm definitely disappointed. Thought I'd finally found something that would work. |

I'm also about 5 weeks into using Retin-A, and I'm still breaking out and peeling horribly. However, my forehead which was covered with bumps has finally started to clear up. So thankfully I'm seeing some improvement there. That is the only thing that keeps me using it. I read on another message board that you really needed to give it a good 3 months to purge your skin so I'm sticking with it for now.
I am also using Clean & Clear Persagel 10 on the cystic bumps to help dry them up. That seems to be helping some. |

Hi Dede, yes, Retin-A takes time to work, but stick with it! It really does work. My sister had remarkable results with it, but she went through an awful purging and peeling phase. I too have had great success with it, although I admit to waking one morning to find my face peeling off in layers (and I had to go walk the dog! I wore a scarf and a hood and told him to "go" quickly!). So I do hope you stick it out and I'm writing to encourage both of you!!! Joani |

Thanks for the encouragement Joani! I do have faith that it will work. Of course in the meantime I've been having to convince my coworkers that I don't have a serious skin conditin because I've been flaking everywhere for the last month!
How long did you and your sister have to put up with the peeling and flaking? What type of products were you using with the Retin-A? |

I've been using tretinoin 0.01%, (same as Retin-A but a different brand) for about three weeks now. I have had some redness and flaking but not much and that has subsided. I started with the lowest dose I could because I've read that the higher doses may not be more effective but will most likely cause more irritation.
My skin right now feels smooth as can be but when look at my nose I see more blackheads, I think the top layers of skin sloughing off have exposed them.
I may also still start breaking out with, I'll just have to wait and see. When did you guys start breaking out? |

I was breaking out before I started Retin-A on my forehead and chin. Those areas have mostly cleared up now after about 5 weeks, except for a few stubborn ones on my forehead. About 3 weeks into the treatment I started breaking out on my cheeks. That has continued but the bumps have cleared up quickly only to be replaced by more.
I've not really noticed much change in blackheads or pore size.
I'm also using the .01% because my skin is sensitive. I started out with using it every 3 days, then moved to every other day, and now I'm using it every day. |

I use retin-A micro for certain zits, but it never works on my cystic ones because all it would do is peel the outer skin and the zit would never come to a head. Hopefully it will work for you. |

Retin-A helped very much when I used to get cystic acne at that time of the month. Now, when I get the occasional cystic zit, I spot treat with Retin-A and helps it to clear up before it can become giant and painful. Stick with your Retin-A. It is the jumbo-turbo jet of topical skin care products. |

Hmmm...when I got email notification that there had been a reply, I thought, "Let me guess which website we are being spammed with yet again...m." I made a prediction and I was right! What do I get?? |
