Hi,
Is this something to worry about.
I am not trying to lose weight. I already am quite slim. But as part of my training in martial arts we are put through rigorous training. I didn't used to worry about this in the past. But could I lose facial volume in my face from exercise and workout?
If so, what can I do to prevent it? |

Aerobic exercise will burn fat all over, so yes, you may lose fat in your face from that. Worst culprit that makes people look older is long distance running, due to oxidative stres. (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/06/19/innovative-revolutionary-program-to-keep-your-body-biologically-young.aspx)
But I think making sure you are eating well, getting plenty of protein can help. I do not know about face exercises making people lose facial fat. My belief is that when people get gaunt from face exercises, it is because muscles are lifted from where they had drooped to and that leaves the area they were looking "empty". The author of the face exercise program I do is constantly researching solutions and when she noticed that her face was getting gaunt, she came up with a massage that works with the exercises to plump the face up. She is 68 and she recently shared her pics in the thread about her program (see the last post of the following thread if the link does not land you on page 11:
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=36501&start=250
I also shared on page 10 of that thread how my face, which I never considered gaunt, has filled out thanks to her program. I was almost 44 in the after photos while I was 37 in the before photos.
I do think a good face exercise program helps you keep your face looking fuller than it would be if you were not doing the exercises. The theory being, face exercises shorten and build muscles so they are not long and saggy but compact.
Sorry for responding in PM land. I am not a fan of posting on the forum. |

I notice fit bodies and saggy wrinkled faces at the gym. I think it could be from a super low fat diet and too much working out. Make sure you're eating healthy fats..and don't get obsessed with working out.
I think..these women look extra old because their bodies are so fit, it is shocking when you see their faces, because the face doesn't match the expectation. |

Hey there – no two bodies are alike, but often times when people begin training of any sorts they are usually very gung ho and wanting to dive right in which is great. However the issue I’ve often seen with both body and facial exercises is that the last people tend to look or examine is their diets. Now this seems like a strange thing to mention, but you have to understand and appreciate what an amazing thing our bodies are. When you say do weights, you are tearing down muscle fibres and the real work begins when you stop working out because the body goes into overdrive trying to repair and heal the muscle fibres and ensure its safety against possible future attacks. Survival is the body’s number 1 priority – so when it comes to working out, if there is for example insufficient protein available to the body to help it repair, it will look for alternatives. Now fat is one such alternative that it can often reuse and instigate easily and so at times it will go for fat tissue.
Many people also start out with consuming insufficient calories or the wrong kind of nutrients for their bodies. Its not hard to see why when you see how much information is out there on foods to eat, and avoid etc etc. In essence it is really about whatever food you are eating contributing to the changes that you and your body are trying to create or make. I know for example, if I am doing strength training and I go out and eat a MacDonalds, my body isn’t going to have the same effect as if I was to consume a healthy green vegetable juice, plus also my energy levels are going to be effected, I probably will feel sleepy or out of sorts. That’s just a simplistic but basic example to show you just how crucial diet is.
Now to get to your “If so, what can I do to prevent it?” one of the essential things to do first and foremost is to really look at what you are eating on a daily basis. By that I mean examine are you eating consistently, same time same foods or intermittently – different times, places etc. What symptons is your body giving you – are you full of energy, alert, happy or drained, tired, somber. These are all indicators of whats taking place within your body. Now as to the face, what can you do – by far facial exercise rocks. I am a trainer of one program called FlexEffect, which was developed in relation to an amazing women who began weight lifting and bodybuilding and noticed she didn’t like her face appearing as gaunt as it did and so began experimenting with resistance exercises. There are many programs out there but its one that I really enjoy and personally still do to this day (yep I did it this morning). |

Hotdocgirl that is a huge part of it, but also when you look at those women, recognise that as great as they are with their bodies they completely neglect their faces. I often think it’s a shame because if they started applying similar techniques to their faces, their faces would be capable of changing quite rapidly too and they wouldn’t look so strange in comparison. Whats more is that I noticed ages ago that many facial exercise program teachers focus solely on the face and neglect the body (not all but majority) and that has always been part of my own awareness and helpful to me.

Very true.. I agree. It takes a lot of energy to do it all! lol. But..truly, something we all need to realize ..that we often focus on the thing that bothers us the most ..and forget.. the neck.. the body..and youthful fun spirit.. all the elements that keep us our most youthful. |
