I am 50, menopausal for 3 yrs. My skin is the pits. Very dry & sensitive......the dryness gives me fine lines across my cheeks & under my eyes. It actually looks like someone is pulling my skin. My skin only gets red from irritating facial products that contain alcohol, drinking alcohol and my hot tub. I don't have red bumps just looks like I get sunburned. I do get dry patchy areas - some MD's call it dermatitis some eczema or is it Rosacea? Whatever it is the only thing that helps besides cortisone is A&D ointment - that's right the stuff for the diaper area.
I have been searching & searching for products to help me - none have helped. After reading reviews onwww.makeupalley.com I have come to realize that Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing lotion might be my biggest problem due to the alcohol.
I haven't found the perfect product for my face. Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer is good BUT not good enough.
I will take any offers of suggestions - I have been on so many beauty forums, makeup alley.com ( reading all the reviews ) - like I've said I have tried just about everything from Arbonne to Oil of Olay. NO Holy Grail yet of any skin care products.
I wish someone could help me find the right product - I am so desperate. |

Hi cat4554, Whilst i am not menopausal yet (probably just around the corner!), i can relate to some of your concerns - i too have very dehydrated areas on my cheeks and forehead and areas of redness on cheeks, nose and chin and like you, there are no lumpy, bumpy bits related to the redness. I suspect, like you, it may have a little something to do with a fondness for lying in hot tubs for ages reading (my way to unwind!) and red wine - also chilli and alot of outdoors horseriding etc. I also made mine red, sore and angry from desperately trying all sorts of products, that in retrospect were just too harsh for me. So i made a decision to keep it simple and pure as poss. by choosing a product line and giving it a good go - i chose Yonka - read lots of positive posts on this forum and loved the sound of it on further investigation.Anyway, ordered samples and actually went for a facial for the first time in my life (had always been worried about huge breakouts following a facial) - a Yonka one. The beautician told me that the mild areas of redness were in fact very early signs of rosacea which she told me to use Phyto 54 to treat - it smells quite pine foresty and is cooling, soothing and comforting. This is AM, followed by Optimiser cream. PM - Lait Nettoyant, which deep cleanses, but doesn't strip the skin - very gentle! Then Elastin nuit and optimiser fluid, mixed together in the palm of my hand and applied. The products are lovely and skin right in leaving no residue. Have to say that i think i am going to need a bit more moisture on cheeks and forehead, but apparantly, we are working on desensitising my skin at the moment - balancing and soothing it - have to say, after nearly two weeks, skin feels alot happier - but i still think it is too early to give an accurate review of my experience. Think i may have to check out cream 28!
I have read that products containing phytooestrogens are particularly good for menopausal skin - products with soy etc.I really liked what i read about moisturising, plumping and firming qualities of these products - desperately trying to remember some. I do remember really liking the sound of Decleor's Vitaroma range - balm for the evening and oil and cream for AM.I think this cream has phytooestrogens in it as well as lots of other goodies!, Their cleansing oil has also had lots of good reviews on this forum, a much gentler alternative to your usual cleanser, if you don't like the sound of the Liat Nettoyant. In my very humble opinion, binning your harsh cleanser in itself should provide huge benefits - i used Clinique for years, much to the horror of forum members - and they were right! If Yonka doesn't deliver for me, Decleor will be my next port of call!
I've waffled on - hope it helps a little - there are lots of poeple here who i'm sure will have lots of good advice for you - Good luck |

Thank you Shivvie for all your info......I don't drink alcohol not only b/c of the redness but it does block up my nose & I can't breathe.
Anyway - where would I find all the products you mentioned? They are not all from the same line?
I am so frustrated finding something to help my skin look decent. |

Hi, although I'm in the same age range, I still have the oily skin problem. I use a site for more "natural" products that may help you.
beautyhabit.com
They have a product called Aromatherapy Associates - Rescue Supersensitive Facial Oil (For sensitive skin, this gentle, soothing oil with camomile and evening primrose oil is suitable for even the most sensitive of skins.)
They list many gentle natural products on their site. Hope this helps, Joani |

Hi, I'm very dry and sensitive as well, I've tried many many products that claim to be good for sensitive skins, dr. hauscka, decleor, babor, and dermalogica just to name a few! Some people are just more sensitive than others, most of these are natural, but alot of them contain fragrant oils that upset my skin, if you are interested in trying these products out I suggest you get samples first. I have spent about 400.00 dollars on products just from eds that I can't use! I don't want to turn you off of purchasing from them, I just want you to be cautious in your selections, eds is a fabulous web site and the service is great, I wish that I could use the products they offer!
I have finally found my holy-grail moisturizer,La Roche-Posay Toleriane Riche-Soothing Protective Cream...continued.... |

(continued from above) This stuff is like silk on my skin, and my skin just drinks it up! Its not too expensive either, around 22.00 dollars for a 40 ml tube. I bought mine at shoppers drug mart in Canada, they also have a website,www.laroche-posay.com
As for cleansing, I didn't care for the cetaphil brand of cleanser either, I prefer spectro-jel, have been using it for a year now and won't buy anything else, its the best! It doesn't dry me out and cleanses pretty good! This can also be purchased from drugstores across Canada, don't know if they have a website or not.
And last but not least, for a really cheap skin moisturizer that doesn't break the bank or break out your face is cetaphil moisturizing cream, I use this at night and wake up with really nice soft skin!
Well, thats what works for me! Hope I helped you out a bit, good luck to you, I know sensitive skin can be a big pain in the you know what! |

Hi there! Well I just wanted to say that cetaphil does not contain alcohol. I think you're confusing it with SD alcohol. The cetyl alcohol in Cetaphil is an emollient, thickener and emulsifier. Its good for skin. If you have sensitive skin, I would keep on using Cetaphil. It really is comforting for sensitive skin like yours. |

I feel for you. I have the same skin type, dry/sensitive with dermatitis. Cetaphil cleanser really dries out my skin and made it itch. I am still search for my holy grail skincare products. Definitely try to get samples first before purchasing or purchase from places that take returns. With sensitive skin types, you have to try new products very carefully.
Good luck with your search. |

Thank you for all your info - I will keep searching.
Cetaphil burned my face - not calming at all.
I read many reviews on makeupalley.com and Cetaphil did that to many others too. We all react differently. It was not calming - I can't have alcohol on my face , no matter what kind, it burns. |

Wow, sorry about that! I didn't realize you were that sensitive. I guess you would have to STOP using all offending products and use something prescriptive cream from your doctor with a mild antibiotic mixed in. I would start there. I think you'll find that helps. You could have some sort of bacteria on your skin that won't go away. |
