I have made many different DIY C serums from this forum. A couple I have liked and still make. However, for all the recipes that I have made, there has not been one that has not had trouble with Ferulic acid solubility. No matter what I have tried so far, I always end up with the Ferulic acid white flakes in my serum. They never mix in well. I have followed every recipe exactly as shown.
I've come to the conclusion that not enough alcohol/propylene glycol is being used in these DIY recipes. The most I've seen is at 6%. If you take a look at Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, they use a very high amount (20% Ethoxydiglycol, 10% Propolyene Glycol).
Next time I think I'm going to use at least 12% Everclear in my recipe.
However I don't know much about using alcohol in serums. So my question...
1) Is using Alcohol/Everclear at a high percentage a bad thing, and if so, why?
2) In terms of comparing Propylene Glycol and Everclear, is Everclear more irritating to the skin? |
