I just finish reading " Dont go to the cosmetics counter whitout me " and " The beauty bible" . It was really good général informations and actualy she made me discover BHA. I have follow every single recomendations from her and then realize that maybe she wasent right on everything. My skin reponds really good to natural skincare and essentials oils. But I stop using them for a while because Paula says that they are just fragrant oil with no benefit ! She realy dosent like Decleor...bot here, on EDS there is a lot of fans ! What is your point of views about this. I respect her work and will always keep her books as beauty reference but ...(like my friend said )"She's not good " |

Your quote works either way for me. I don't like that she can never be totally positive about any products, there is always a "but". I also disagree with her dislike for anything shimmery, and her stance against botanicals and essential oils is just...well, it's just not my truth. |

I take what she says with a grain of salt. She has some good points, but I think is way off on a lot of her opinions.
She loses a lot of credibility points with me when she is also promoting her own skincare and cosmetic lines. |

I frankly think she sucks. I mean, come on. She compared Kerastase to Pantene!!!! She must be smoking something! For one, she reviews about a thousand product, just reads that ingredient list, and make her judgement. Her reviews are not based on actual results people have gotten, or how much ingredient (except where it gives concentrations) is actually in the product. If it could POSSIBLY be an irritant, she gives it the lowest rating, and I have cross-referenced some of her reviews of products that she said will do nothing but irritate the skin, and they get glowing reviews from people who actually have TRIED the product, no irritation.
She just bothers me. |

Some of the information is really good and that is how I discovered AHA & BHA but, there are a lot of times when I think she doesn't know jack. |

I'm probably going on a limb here, but as I have said in this forum in the past, I happen to like her skincare products (just not her make up line).
Everyone is entitled to their opinion - she just makes a living giving it (as well as selling her products, of course). It isn't fun reading criticism about a product you really like but that doesn't mean you shouldn't trust your instincts about the product - just keep using it if it works for you!
BTW - There are plenty of products out there that she gives very favorable ratings to - and they are usually much less expensive then some of the comparable high-end products.
For some reason people get very angry about her ratings - but I have discovered some neat products because of her. |

Ditto for me, she takes herself way to seriously. |

I quite like her skincare reviews (don't always agree). Her hair ones were way off for my hair.

Yeah, what tam said! I read her newsletters and site info just for background info, but I have not bought a single thing based on her recs. |

I like her b/c she introduced me to BHAs, but I too find her somewhat picky. She doesn't seem to be interested in natural and organic products, while I have found them (especially oils!) beneficial for my skin. |

this is so funny,
someone posted a link a couple of weeks ago to her new reviews for 2006, and i was excited to read them. i was summarily put off by everything this woman had to say--and not because i use a product that she dislikes or vice versa. I also found some of here endorsements for drugstore or commercial items misleading and shocking! i was thinking about posting a negative reaction to it in the previous thread, but i decided it wasn;t worth it. thanks for posting this, katya--there is clearly something unsavory about her approach to skincare, and i cannot quite put my finger on it. one thing is for sure, however--her inattention to the products that she is reviewing is, for the most part, blatantly obvious and reduces her credibility in my eyes.

I saw Paula on "The Shopping Bags" when they were talking about lipgloss.
Paula said to use products with oil (more hydrating) and to avoid wax... and then I went and looked at my Paula's Choice lip treatment balm... and the second ingredient is wax!!

I like that she saves me from making a lot of buying mistakes in skin care and cosmetics and find shes highly respected in the beauty industry. She knows formulations well. The fact that she sells her own line up of beauty products doesn't bother me; in fact I'm thankful that if I purchase a product from her, at least I know I'll be happy with it. |

I think Paula is quite knowledgable and I definitely sift through her reviews when I want to try a new product.
Like some have already mentioned, I continue to use some products that she warns against; at the same time, I have steered away from products that she doesn't like and when I do a bit more reading on MUA, Paula's review is similar to the MUA ones.
I notice that she is keen on silicone based products. Her own products are quite silicone based as well. For those that don't like silicone, I suppose you wouldn't like her reviews either.

As much as I'm sometimes interested in what she has to say, I also take her reviews with a grain of salt. It might make me question a product more, but if I'm still interested in it, I'll try it for myself and make my own judgement. And I was really annoyed with her when years ago she kept saying how much she disliked makeup with shimmer ... I LOVE shimmer ... well, I love some matte stuff now too, but it just made me mad how much she seemed to depise anything glowy and didn't think it looked good on anyone. |

My opinion exactly!
What I *do* like is reading about the business side of "beauty" (example: how Estee Lauder and L'Oreal pretty much have a monopoly on anything you buy in a department store). It made me realize some time ago that reading Allure Magazine is pretty much reading one big advertisement -- I guess I'm a little slow, but for years I would simply go out and buy whatever the latest "groundbreaking" trend was. Or I would jump on the best "Under $10 whatever" just because they recommended it ( m, do ya think that Neutrogena has just a *little* pull with the Allure editors???) I'm much more careful these days. |

I find it very difficult to trust a review when the person writing it hasn't actually used the product. I have to admit, I did read most of "Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me" a few years back, and have since tossed out many of her ideas about skincare just through my own trial and error. Although some of what she says is quite knowledgeable, I found that a lot of her product "suggestions" didn't work for me.
My "Beauty Bible" is this forum, where I get reviews from real people who are actually using the products, and giving their honest opinion with regards to their own skin type! It's much more informative, and less biased. |

I sometimes find her knowledgeable when she talks about dermatology related topics. I don't care much for her comments on Organic skincare. |

I lost respect for her when she came out with her own products and started touting them as the best. So much for objectivity! |

I don't even like MAC as much, ever since Estee Lauder bought it out. Same goes for Stila, Bobbi Brown.
I wonder if Cargo was sold to Estee Lauder.
I agree with all of you with your comments. It is hard to find a win/win with Paula B. |
