Hi! I'm 24 with oily, acne prone skin. Last year I was on retin a but stopped bc I felt I didn't need it anymore. I was left with discoloration and began using fading creams. Well big mistake because I broke out again. I didn't want to go back on retin a again bc of the IB so I've been using baking soda and water. Aspirin, honey, alcohol, and witch hazel. I've also used an otc 10% benzoyl peroxide that I threw out bc it dried out my skin. Plus I've read long term use with BP can cause premature aging. That scared me. I've only had it for 5 days so it hasn't been long.
I think BP and over exfoliating worsened my skin. My skin was never this dehydrated and thin. I was wondering if any of you could suggest me any oil free moisturizers that can help repair the skin barrier. I've googled all day and can't find anything but Cerave which I've used I thought it was terrible.i took fish oil supplements it made my skin glowy but sadly I had to stop bc I've developed a huge cyst on my cheek which is now ruining my life. I've also used Nivea, Olay, and emu oil but they've all broke me out in whiteheads. Now I'm left with scarring,pimples,huge pores, and paper thin skin. I barely leave the house now. It's like my skin aged 20 yrs. It's very depressing I believe I've damaged my skin.  |

| I would speak to your derm. He/She may be able to recommend something else. Skin problems are no fun. I have used Epiduo. It does contain BP but seems very easy on the skin. |

| If you found Retin-A helpful then I would go back to using it. Did you use a good sunscreen the last time you used it? If not, that could be the reason for your discoloration. |

The first thing I would do in your situation, as I have very similar skin and it has taken me a LONG time to find the right balance.
STOP using backing soda on your face, its WAY TOO alkaline and will destroy your acid mantle, which should be 5.5 ph, which is acidic. Instead you need very gently products on your skin that are light and anti-bacterial. I don't actually recommend making your own products, as most ingredients are super stripping or harsh on the skin such as apple cider vinegar, clay masks - no.
Benzyl peroxide is not the way to go either as it
really disrupts the skin.
Find a clean yet gentle cleanser that is not stripping and a hydrating product that is also gentle, yet wont clog your pores.
I would leave some of my favourites, yet I don't know what each person's budget is and the products I like tend to run a bit high in price. There are many awesome product lines out there, that are affordable and really work! |

I agree with the previous poster. Stop the baking soda and BP. Many years ago, I used Tazorac before I too was left with easily irritated, thin skin. Now, I use only products formulated or test on extremely sensitive skin. Don't worry! You are 24 which means your skin is also at an age where it can really bounce back without issue.
I suggest also stopping the witch hazel. That stuff irritates me like crazy! My skin gets very red an hot and, over time, completely irritated by it. Consider using a very gentle, but thorough, cleanser like Paula's Choice Earth Sourced Gel which I currently use. In fact, her Earth Sourced cleanser and toner are my staples day and night. Their pH is right and the toner is loaded with good stuff.
La Roche Posay makes a acne/irritation product called Effaclar K which was tested (they advertise) on super sensitive skin. It helps me and I use it once every day. Nights and mornings. Niacinimide, like in CeraVe, is a good ingredient for your situation as it really packs a healing punch.
Also good for fair, super sensitive skin like mine and perhaps yours, is Azelaic Acid. I just started using Glo Therapeutics Dual Advantage Cream and my skin has responded very well. It's good for reducing redness, acne, and scarring. Good thing is a lot of this stuff is reasonably priced. Take your skin back to basics and work up from there. Good luck. |

Why are you hesitating to go back on Retin-A? If you cannot get into your derm, your family doctor can prescribe it.
Retin-A helps prevent breakouts. It also helps fade dark spots leftover from breakouts. Keep out of the sun as this can cause hyper pigmentation. Even better is to use a broad spectrum sunscreen.
I agree with others on stopping the baking soda and other harsh products. |

With sensitive and reactive skin that is prone to become out of balance easily I would NEVER EVER recommend any form of Retina A cream of any form. I could go on and on, but its best used by people with thick and relatively 'normal skin'. The horror stories I have read and my own personal experience of using supervised professional, very expensive, best retina A products actually destroyed my skin. Another long story, yet its not for everyone, especially a person with this type of skin history!
There are so many other awesome products, like the Paula's Choice, that the previous woman recommends and other healing products that will help a young woman have youthful, healthy skin, rather than slather on anti-aging products that will thin the skin over time and probably, according to a ton of research I have done; age this poor girl faster in the long run!!! |

If it is working, I would go back to it. If it is working somewhat the doctor can suggest something else.
It is strong medication and sunscreen is advised. |

Thank you for showing me that she was already using it previously.
Skin issues are not always easy to resolve, even with doctor prescribed products.
Yet, a dermatologist would have a good recommendation, if they are innovative and into the new products out there; otherwise I am not so sure, as they usually recommend a lot of antibiotics and acutane, as well as super strong external products.
I just read an article from one a famous Dermatologist who practices in Manhattan, with over 25 years expericne, she specialized in adult acne. All the products she recommended were super gentle professional spa products, like Luzern cleansing gelee with their Micro Gel, rather than the harsh prescription products. |

I agree with the recommendations to check out Paula's Choice products which typically don't contain irritants like fragrances and essential oils. They also have a great customer service center to help with your particular skin issues and a super return/exchange policy if you have adverse reactions.
Also, I highly recommend Concha Nacar de Perlop Bleach Cream (#3). Don't be afraid of the word "bleach" because it won't turn you into a ghost. This is a very gentle salicylic acid mask that will soothe your inflammation and will help with your acne pigmentation. It's also inexpensive so you can use it often and it won't break the bank. It's a drug store product but hard to find because it's marketed to Hispanic women primarily so you'll probably have to buy it on line. Walgreens used to carry it in their ethnic skin care dept. but not at all stores. I'm of Nordic background, fair skin, and I love this mask. Wish I could find it more easily so I didn't have to mail order all the time. |

No indication of the amount of BHA in the product. Also note this does not appear to be a gentle treatment ie: oyster shells
If the breakouts are constant, severe and continue to scar I would suggest trying to stop the breakout cycle. |

| I have fair, dry skin and I find this mask very gentle compared to all the other acid products I've used over the years. Yes, it does have a little grit in it from the shells but it's not meant to be used as a scrub. When you splash with water to rinse it off, the mask liquifies and you can get it off without much hand-to-face pressure, or if you want more exfoliation use less water and rub harder. The zinc in it is very soothing to the skin. |
