This will be longwinded, so I apologise in advance.
so I live in Australia, where the UV index is extreme for a lot of the year. I also don't drive, instead catching public transport everywhere. I apply sunscreen religiously every 2-3 hours and always wear a wide brimmed hat whenever I'm outside (with a UPF rating of 50). I also have a parasol with the same level of protection.
As you can see, I'm trying to take every precaution to protect my skin. My first question is this: because of the amount of incidental sun exposure I receive, should I give up on the idea of retin a altogether? will I just end up ruining my skin if I continue with the treatment?
I've been using retin a for about two months now. in the last week or two more freckles have started to appear on my skiin. could this be part of the normal process to beautiful skin? I have read freckles can suddenly appear that were hiding beneath the top layers of the skin.
thirdly, I spend a lot of time at home. I leave all the blinds closed (where possible) to minimise as much sun exposure as possible. For the first 5ish weeks I didn't religiously apply sunscreen while at home (I'm aware and am concerned that the new freckles could be related to this). However in the last few weeks I have been applying a (somewhat weaker) sunscreen while at home, because I find my stronger sunscreen to be too harsh and drying on my sensitive skin. do you think the weaker sunscreen is adequate for minor. Sun exposure? I always apply the stronger sunscreen if I go outside (or layer the two)
Here is my regimen:
Morning -
Clinique moisture surge intense
Nia 24 eye cream
QV moisturising day cream 30 SPF (bemotrizinol 1.8%, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol 2.5%)
Invisible Zinc Environmental skin protector (zinc oxide 20%)
evening -
Mia 24 intensive recovery complex
Nia 24 eye cream
Clinique moisture surge intense
generic 0.025 generic retin a every three days
Lastly, can you recommend a vitamin c serum I could safely add toy regimen in the mornings? there are so many choices I'm feeling overwhelmed!
Thank you |

Okay lots of info here, but how old are you?
Sun protection is a MUST. Whether you are using Retin A or not. Now freckles appearing may be a sign of damage rather than the process to beautiful skin. Even if you are indoors – you should not skip sun protection. UVA and UVB rays can pass through glass so even if you were indoors you can still be at the mercy of damage caused by those two. Also without knowing how old you are – its also possible that in your youth you were exposed to sun and got damaged that hasn’t made its way to the surface just yet too.
Without knowing what your goals are and what you are working towards its too difficult to give an opinion on your routine. |

Sorry I forgot to include that info!
I'm 27, I live in Australia. A few months before I turned 26 I suddenly developed fine lines 'spider webbing' under my eyes. I also developed (not sure what the technical term is) crescent (half circle) lines around the corner of my mouth. I aware that retin a cannot correct nasolabial folds, but I believe these are slightly different.
So my hope is to correct these lines, prevent future damage, and possibly get rid of or reduce some of my freckles.
Prior to the appearance of these fine lines, I only used sunscreen during summer. I had always had good skin and for some silly reason the need for sunscreen never popped into my head.
As I said -- when I'm at home I keep all the shades drawn. Although I did realise the error of my ways a few weeks ago and thus incorporated the weaker sunscreen that my skin tolerates quite well. I reapply it every two hours. When I leave the house, I layer the two sunscreens repeatedly throughout the day. I may try to at least use the stronger sunscreen first thing in the morning when I stay home too (just hard because it makes my skin so dry!). |
