Im a 16 year old guy and I found this forum after googling and made a account because I believe y'all are very knowledgeable and can help me. I used a retonoid after going to a dermatologist because during the summer I had received a a huge sunburn that left my face burned and when i peeled it off i had developed dark spots. So the dermatologist said this would get rid of them. I had no knowledge of anything to do with skin care I was just a 16 year old enjoying his life. So I went home used it and it immediatly burned like crazy. But I kept using it for two weeks because I had trust in the dermatologist. Well that would turn out to be the worst mistake of my life. The derm never told me to use sunscreen whatsoever so I was going in the sun with it. Which now I know is the worst thing you could possibly do. I developed tiny scars from the retin a and severe dry burning skin to the sun.and the dark spots I originally had from the sun burn were worse. But the worst of it all was when I took a picture smiling the next day I had developed a huge nasobial fold. I was devastated. I took before and after pictures and I couldnt help but start crying seriously. Remember Im a 16 year old guy in school. I looked like a 40 year old man when two weeks before i used it I had a baby face. My life has been ruined since then and Ive used moisturizers and everything its still there. I really need your help. I dont trust dermatologists all they would say is fillers but thats crazy. There has to be a reason and a solution Im only 16 with zero nasobial folds before the retin a. If i look like this right now imagine in 10 years and Id only be 26. Please guys I really am devastated by this. Its destroyed my whole life literally. |

Wow, you poor kid. I am so sorry this happened to you. I am not as knowledgeable as many on this board but wanted to express my concern. Hopefully some of the others will come in. You are only 16 so your skin can recover. I wouldn't do anything else irritating or abrasive to it. It needs to rest and recover. After I did a face plant to a side walk (severe abrasions) an ingredient called Tepezcohuite helped my skin heal. They sell a serum and a cream on ASDM Beverly Hills. I would go for the cream. In the short term try pure Aloe Vera Gel. Good luck and take care. |

Sorry this happened to you. Here's my input:
1) Stop the retin a if you haven't already. If you ever decide to try it again, go slow, and use it only once every 3 days to start.
2) You need to use sunscreen. It might be tough to find one that doesn't sting your already sensitive skin. I'd suggest a mineral sunscreen, one with zinc, which can soothe irritated skin. I'm not sure if you have acne issues as well, if so, try to find a sunscreen that won't irritate acne as well. Search for "mineral sunscreen" in EDS for recommendations.
3) You need something for skin barrier repair. Once again if you are acne prone this will be tougher to find. I like Elta MD Intense, but some of the Cerave products are good too.
4) Do not freak out. What you are seeing is probably dehydration of your skin and it will pass. You are young and your skin is resilient. Go gentle on your skin for now. Once it's calmed down, come back to EDS and folks can help you with suggestions on hyper pigmentation.
Good luck! |

Eeeppp, sorry! Surprised your Dermatologist didn't say anything, give you warnings. I started Retinol myself but only use it once a week until my skin gets used to it.
Your skin will heal though, any damage now, can be undone, fixed, etc. For dark spots, you can always try something like Nia24 Rapid Depigmentation Serum. MitoQ serum also helps me with dark spots. |

Sorry to go OT, but have long have you used MitoQ, Whitewolf? Do you also use other antioxidants, such as c? I've been using it for a while. I can't tell any difference, but it doesn't feel icky on my skin. I will probably keep using it. I am hoping it is preventing damage.
Back on topic, I cannot believe the derm didn't tell the OP to use sunblock and go slow with retin a. I would definitely let my derm know how upset I was about the omission of very important information. |

I want to thank all of you for taking the time of from your day to respond it means a lot to me in this situation that im in. My main concern at this point is not the pigmentation whatsoever it is the deep nasolabial fold that I have developed. It shows even without smiling. It just makes me devastated when I look in the mirror. I have moisturized so much with the best of moisturizers to see if it was just dry skin but the wrinkle is still there.Im so worried that this is not fixable. I seriously do not understand why this has happened its obviously not old age but how could retin a do this to my young skin. This is why I have come to this website because I believe someone understands what retin a has done and how to fix it. From some of my research I believe it might be that the retin a seriously thinned my epidermis causing this nasolabial fold but at the same time I wouldnt know how to fix it. Please someone help im so lost on what to do and the stupid dermatologist is saying to do a filler which drives me insane because thats not a solution as im only a teenager.I really need one of yalls help, thank you again. |

Hi there, I'm really sorry for you. I've been undergoing something similar to what you describe, though my damage stemmed from a chemical peel. I've recently found a routine that is actually giving results in repairing my skin. I use twice a day a cream called A-derma Epitheliale and I wash my face with A-derma Sensifluid cleansing bar (no, I'm not doing undercover marketing LOL, but a dermatologist recommended this brand to me and it's the only one I've tried that has improved my skin). The lines and and roughness are getting smoother, and my skin feels overall less deydrated. I'm planning to get a facial as well to get my blackheads removed, I hope the ugly pores I've developed finally shrink. |
