Hello, I've recently started the Obaji nu derm line and I am concerned that my hyper pigmentation is getting worse. I'm not sure if this is part of the process or am I having an adverse reaction. Has anyone's skin darkened before it got better? My forehead appears to have a strange tan/reddish tone slightly darker than the rest of my face. I am only on week three and am noticing this discoloration. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Abaca,
I've also just started to use Obagi 3 days ago, starting to get ready and a substantial dry skin feel. I don't have a lot of hyper pigmentation but my DR advised that sometimes dark spots or melasma gets worse before it gets better. Reasons are that the deeper pigmentation is coming up to the surface to be cleared out in combination with the clearer areas of your skip to become clearer so dark spots are more noticeable. I've also read lots of reviews and your symptoms seem to be common so I would not worry. If you don't see improvements in a few weeks then perhaps consult dermatologist but I believe you are in the mend Good luck and let me know how you get on! |

Mercedeslsr, Thanks. This is something I did not know before. It's good to learn something new about this hyperpigmentation clearing process. |

Hi Judy,
This is some information that the dermatologist gave me but thinking about it seems to make sense. Dark pigmentation is deeper routed in inner layers of the skin and somehow diffused in the epidermis so with new skin coming out the clear and blender are supposed to keep working on the hyper pigmentation whilst with the tretinoin you will keep peeling until the renewed skin has achieved the best possible result.I am now on the 25th day of the system. Have used it every morning and evening but the exfoderm and the tretinoin, only every other day and I peel quite randomly...some days i do and some days i don't. ( peel mostly on the chin area, nose as well) I already can see a certain glow in the skin that was lost and it feels overall smoother and brighter so looking forward to finishing the treatment and see the overall results before maintenance. Thankfully the soreness is now gone |

Both my sister and I have used the full set of Obagi Nu Derm years ago. We didn't have the hyperpigmentation issue. However, my sister's face had a slight lobster red color during the treatment, while I got flaky skin. I gave up using it finally. Despite so, I did notice some of my small freckles on my cheek were remarkably lightened, if not disappeared. Use of Retin-A alone could help lighten freckles too, but the effect would not be as effective as using the Obagi Nu Derm system. This is my personal experience for sharing only. |
