Hello. I've been using Retin a for years. I recently switched from .05% cream to .1% gel. I used it for about 4 days with out any redness, just peeling. Then I caught poison ivy on my face and neck and stopped for a week. I received a steroid shot and steroid cream and the poison ivy resolved pretty quickly. Two days later I used the retin a gel again. That night I remember waking up to scratch my face. When I got up in the morning my face was burnt, red, swollen, with slight itching every once in a while. It burned like heck the whole day long and is still swollen tonight. I went to the ER but they didn't do anything.. just said to wait it out. Why did the retin a all of a sudden do this? When this is over, do you think I will be able to try it again? Is it possible that the steroids made my skin more sensitive? Or was this an allergic reaction? I took benedryl all day just in case. |

I would guess your skin was still very sensitive from the poison ivy and steroids. The .1% is stronger, plus the gel base may have less moisturizing in it and more alcohol.
I'd wait another week or so and try the Retin A again, but only in a small patch of skin and see what happens. Since you used it for four days prior, it doesn't sound like an allergic reaction to the new gel. |

I'm curious, why did you decide to move up your Retin A strength and switch to gel? |

Thanks Shasta, that's what I was thinking, too. I switched because AllDayChemist was out of the one I usually get and I wanted to bump it up for a while and see peeling a bit. I was getting nothing with the cream. |

the gel makes a huge dif for me.
I used to use tazorac gel and it would tear up my face. i could only use it less than once a week. But I can use a cream that is double the strength about 2 as often.
So you went up on two different levels of irritation in a way |

I believe it! I really wanted the cream but it wasn't available. For a long time the only cream I've seen at AllDayChemist is the .05%. |

I think it is the gel version, which penetrates faster and deeper than the cream. I have been using retin A for the last 10 years and would not be without it. It is my holy grail for skin anti aging. |
