Thank you in advance for reading this long post. I am a 23 year old who has suffered with severe cystic acne on back of neck and chin since adolescence. Used BP wash for years. When finally seeing a dermatologist, she prescribed Tazorac. It burned my face and made it peel, but I thought it was supposed to do that in order to be effective, so I continued using it. Also during that same time I spent several weeks at the beach in the sun with little to no sunscreen (dumb, I know). Now, my cheeks are permanently red and have started breaking out with what I can only assume is rosacea. (I never had acne on my cheeks before) Trip to the dermatologist confirmed that my “acne vulgaris is becoming more acne rosacea”.
Stopped all BP and Tazorac, and started using Metrogel in AM and Finacea in PM. Also washing with Sodium Sulfacetimide. Moisturizing in AM (with sunscreen included) and PM. She prescribed Doxycycline 2x/day.
The cystic acne is virtually gone from my neck and chin (was that from the doxy?). The spots on my cheeks have flattened out but are still red, and my cheeks are still red. I still have some acne spots around my mouth, forehead and the back of my neck, so it seems as if I have a combination of rosacea issues and actual acne. Also my face tends to be extremely oily.
My question is where do I go from here? I would like to try to get rid of the acne without further inflaming the rosacea. I also want to try to continue to calm my cheeks down, because they seem to have stopped improving at this point. It seems like I need one thing for the persistent acne and something else for the rosacea. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, I’m pretty sure I have ocular rosacea too because my eyes are constantly dry and irritated and I have had a chalazion removed. I use the occusoft wipes 2x/day and eye drops. It doesn’t help much.
I appreciate any advice! |
