I want to try retin-a but I have sensitive skin and would rather start with the strongest non-prescription retin-a before paying to see a dermatologist just to get a prescription for it.
I really don't know the first thing about it so I've come here to ask what brand, where to buy and what percentage/amount/grams is available in non-prescription?
Also, I would like to know how to use retin-a. Every few days? Every other day?
Can I end up eventually using it every night or that's just too much?
Do I put anything on top or just retin-a on the nights I use it?
Should I use a particular moisturizer on nights I don't use it?
And is there anything known to interact badly with retin-a that I should avoid in my skin care products?
If you can even link one that you've used and have experience with, that would be much appreciated! Thanks y'all!! |

If You have sensitive skin don’t risk it. It is a prescription medicine for a very good reason, and sensitive skins need to have care and attention when using it. You will at some point experience adverse reactions which are “normal” and may scare yourself silly thinking you did the wrong thing. Nowadays not all derms prescribe it because it can be problematic. It is not something I would suggest to anyone with sensitive skin – instead I’d suggest opting for an over the counter retinoid product. These can produce similar results as Retin A but need longer use.
If you do go against my advice and go for it anyhow – start out very gently. Every night is too much in the beginning. Every other night is fine. You NEED sunscreen. Retin A makes your skin more sensitive to light and thus damage. When you use Retin A you are not supposed to use anything on top for at least half an hour – as it will interfere with absorption and prevent it from travelling deep into the derma. |

You're right, I'd rather not risk it then. I would like to try the retinoids you mentioned.
What are some good ones that have gotten good reviews on this forum? How do I use retinoids? And do I put a specific moisturizer on top? Sorry, I'm a complete newbie in this department. |
