Hi guys,
Newbie here, hoping to get some help with a super important issue - sun protection!
In short, I get migraines a lot and one of the worst triggers is the smell of sunscreen. I feel physically ill and within an hour I am bedridden with a migraine whenever I put it on my face.
The only sunscreen I have been able to find that does not do this is zinc free, so I am thinking it is the zinc that is causing my problems.
I am currently using Rationale's Sebocyte SuperLight Lotion SPF 50+
The sunscreen ingredients are: Octocrylene70mg/g, Oxybenzone30mg/g, ButylMethoxydibenzoylmethane 25mg/g, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulphonic Acid 20mg/g
It also contains lauric and salicylic acids and niacinamide.
However, this sunscreen makes my face feel hot, sweaty and oily and sits terribly under makeup. It is also very thick to apply and leaves a white cast, so I only wear it when I know I'll be outside a lot.
I live in Australia so high sun protection is very important to me. I shudder to think of the damage I have done to my skin from avoiding sunscreens! It is time I act!
Could anyone please, please recommend to me a lightweight, zinc-free sunscreen or moisturiser with spf that is odourless (as opposed to just fragrance free). I literally fear the smell of sunscreen, even a faint whiff.
Being alcohol free would be a bonus as my skin dries out quite quickly. Other bonuses would be no white cast, and sits well under makeup. Something that isn't going to flare up the acne I finally got under control would be awesome too. I hope I am not asking for the world! I'm happy to pay whatever and ship from overseas if necessary!
Thank you so so so so much for any suggestions!

It is not the Zinc but the spices or the alcohol that perfume the sunscreen, sunscreens contain no Zinc may also smelt terrible for you! And Zinc is perfect physical ingredient that can prevent both UVA and UVB.
What is burning your skin may be the salicylic acid, it peels your skin to smooth your skin surface, of course, under an appropriate skin condition, it suit more for oily combination skin. I think maybe now you have thin horny and sensitive skin type, so stop using this product.
Because the salicylic acid is irritative, the niacinamide is designed to calm down your skin in this product.
Another irritative ingredient is the Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, it is a UVB asorbent which is not that safe. It can generate free radicals when exposing to the sun, thereby hurting the DNA or even causing cancer.
stop this product, it is not suitable for you!
In fact, a physical sunscreen, absolutely contains Zinc, is usually milder.
Shiseido and La roche-posay both have good sunscreens,my favorite is Shiseido's elixir day care revolution spf 50 in winter, and Shiseido's anessa protect UV sunscreen spf50+pa++++ (in yellow) can make me feel ease when exposing to big sun.
Don't buy too much sunscreens at a time, this kind of products is always under upgrading, new products can give your better protection and more comfortable usage. |

Avene dry touch emulsion SPF 50 is a very good sunscreen for oily sensitive skin. It has Tinosorb M and Tinosorb S for broad protection. It's fragrance-free, alcohol-free and paraben-free. I've been using it for months and I'm quite satisfied with it (except for the price ). |
