Hi Ladies,
I was wondering if someone could help me. I have this white "dot" on the top part of my lip (on my skin, not on my lip). It's not a whitehead (no bump) and it's been there for a while. It actually looks like a white freckle as weird as that sounds.
Does anyone know what this is? Sun spot? Milia? I have no idea what it is . . . It's just ONE spot, too. If I know what it is, I want to see if I can treat it (and prevent more from occurring).

Lisa,
This sounds like pigmentation loss. Just like you can have a freckle, you can have an area on the skin that is not getting the same amount of melanin as the rest. At least this is what it sounds like. If this is what it is then I'm not sure how to treat or prevent it, sorry  Hope you get some better ideas from others. |

This white freckle thing is on my list for my next dermatologist visit. My mother and I have them mostly on our arms, which makes me think this may be at least partly hereditary. We both do not spend much time in the sun, and sunscreen is my 2nd religion.
Lisa, have you noticed if anyone in your family has noticed pigment loss at your age? |

| In addition to the above factors, have you possibly changed toothpastes or used a whitening toothpaste? This may be something to consider as well. |

| Hypopigmentation (loss of pigmentation) is caused most of the time by sun damage. Too much sun and melanocyte production can become so impaired that skin produces the little white patches. No melanin production in those areas. It is difficult to treat. Seems there was a laser specifically developed for this but I cannot remember the name. Maybe if you search under "vitiligo" you might find some information? Definitely need to use regular sunscreen to prevent further damage if this is what it is from.... There is also a fungus that causes something called tinea versicolor that can cause lots of tiny white freckles to appear. Your derm should be able to identify it. Good luck! |

| I suggest having the dermatologist take a look. I am a physician but not a dermatologist and a patient of mine took herself to her dermatologist when she noticed something on her lip that was barely visible. It turned out to be a skin cancer but easily removable as she caught it so early. Rather be safe even if it probably turns out to be nothing. |
