As I have mentioned under other threads pertaining to self-tanning, I'm extremely fairskinned -- if I spend more than 5 minutes in the sun without protection, I promptly burst into flames!! You can imagine that this was quite traumatic for me growing up in southern California with all of the tanned and beautiful blue-eyed blonds....however, I've always consoled myself with the knowledge that at least *my* skin won't look like a dried-out pair of alligator-skin shoes by the time I hit 30 -- although now I have to change that to "by the time I hate 40"!!

So anyway, although I've found a couple of self-tanners that work well for my skintone (see recent "Speaking of self-tanners" thread for list of specific brands), sometimes I'm too lazy to apply the self-tanner as often as I should so I'm always interested in checking out alternative solutions -- especially products that will apply a bit of color to my legs as I loathe wearing pantyhose, but dread blinding people with the whiteness of legs when I'm wearing short skirts or capris...especially since Springtime has arrived in TX so it's time to start baring my legs!!

I *have* tried those so-called "foundation/makeup for legs" products such as "Air Stockings" and Sally Hansen's "Airbrush Legs" (in fact, last Fall I provided a belated review of sorts to both of these products on this thread: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=1493), along with numerous brands of 'shimmer' lotions but I'm always intested in exploring other options.

Has anybody ever tried either Nar's "Body Glow" or Benefit's "Flamingo Fancy?" I've seen both of these products at my local Sephora, but I always chickened out when it came down to taking the plunge (especially for the Nars as it was upwards of $60USD for a not very big container of it) because they both look really scary and unnatural in their respective bottles. But on MUA, some of the reviewers say that the Benefit bronzer in particular imparts a beautiful hint of color even on the palest of skin (although I must say that the actual reviews for both items are mixed, to say the least!) so I don't know what to believe and thought I'd better come back here and ask if anybody on EDS had tried them. Although I guess the most logical thing for me to do is ask for a sample next time I'm at Sephora...(damn it, I wish I'd thought of this yesterday when I stopped in to buy LoopyLori's LipFusion. Grrr!!!)

Also, if you've sampled any of the shimmer lotions currently on the market, which brands did you like best and why? I've tried a bunch of them (Nivea, St. Ives, Jergens, etc, plus a few "no name" brands, such as the perfumed version from Bonnie Bell made with my all-time fave "Skin" scent -- yummy!!!) and my favorite one of all is actually by Ultima II (Revlon's upper class "sister"), I think it's called "Body Glowtion" or "Glowtion for Body." The reason I liked this one is that it not only contains the usual shimmer, but it's also slightly tinted so it gives one the merest kiss of color to take the edge off the fish-belly whiteness of one's legs. Nivea Shimmer Lotion and other ones like it only have shimmer, which just serves to even out your skintone....

The Body Glowtion costs around $20USD, but the container is *really* crappy. It's one of those bottles that stands on it's end with the 'dispenser' (the proper word completely escapes me at the moment! Confused ) at the bottom and it's made of this very thin, very brittle plastic so that when you get halfway through the container, the plastic actually cracks/splits open so you've got Glowtion oozing out of the sides as your squeezing it thru the spout! Not fun.

Anyway, has anyone ever tried the above-mentioned items or do you have some other similar types of products that you can recommend?

TIA,
Carrie

Hmmm, apparently I’m the only one who’s looking for a safe way to add color to my skin without all the bother of fooling with self-tanners....I’m probably not going to get any responses, but I enjoy talking to myself Confused so I’ll ask anyway:

Has anybody tried the new “Natural Glow Moisturizer” from Jergens? It’s a shimmer body lotion, but it also contains some self-tanner ingredients so if you use it regularly, it gradually gives you a “healthy summer glow.” Supposedly, in just one week you’ll see a darker tone to your skin. This stuff sounds really cool and it’s gotten mostly good reviews on MUA, plus it was written up in this month’s issues of Allure and Lucky magazines. It’s about $5USD, available in the skincare/lotions aisle at most supermarkets and pharmacies. I can’t wait to give this stuff a go!!

BTW, I made a homemade shimmer/bronzing lotion that works pretty well...I mixed some of my Jergen’s shimmer lotion (not the stuff I mentioned above) with a healthy dollop of Dr. Hauchska’s concentrated bronzing gel (I got a huge sample from my fave SA at my beauty boutique) and smoothed it all over my legs this morning. It’s given me just enough color to take the “fish belly” whiteness off, and the shimmer has helped even out my skintone. If it turns out I don’t like that new Jergen’s Natural Glow stuff, then I might just have to buy a bottle of the Dr. H bronzing gel and another bottle of shimmer lotion and make myself a huge vat....

i will write something for you, so you don't go crazy talking to yourself.
i have never used a bronzer, so i can't help you there. not that i don't need to, am very pasty despite it being the end of summer here.

anyway, a friend of mine was raving about some shimmer cream she got with some purfume for christmas- possibly armani, but i will have to check. she said it gave a lovely subtle shimmer and a little bit bronze. tell me if you are interested and i will find out for sure what it was.
i personally like palmer's cocoa butter body gloss, or whatever it is called. this is the second time today i have mentioned cocoa butter, so best shut up about it after this.

hope some/any of this helps. actually, looking back over it i haven't provided you with much info but at least you don't just have yourself to reply to next time!! Very Happy

Hi carekate,
My favorite shimmer lotion is Marc Jacobs Body Lotion with no close second. Both the lotion and the creme give a nice shimmer that's not too obvious and they are scented with my favorite perfume. I have successfully mixed the lotion with Dr Hauschka's bronzer to even out my skin tone. If you'd like to check it out, Sephora should have a tester bottle.

Now, Nars' body glow looked & felt great on my fair skin, but with coconut oil and tiare, I long to bask on some small Polynesian lagoon, sipping a fruity cocktail. Hmmm...I hear Moorea is nice in April and more nice with a tall glass of Malibu Rum and pineapple juice topped with melon liqueur in hand. Yes!...the ultimate distraction from this bitter New England winter. Cool

Hi Carrie,

I have used the Nivea shimmer lotion before but I think more of it stayed on my fingers than got onto my legs. It was ok but nothing special, at least I don't recall being overly excited about it after I bought it and tried it.

I use self tanner on my body generally but use the Dr Hauschka Bronzing Concentrate on my face mixed with some moisturiser or use a tinted moisturiser instead.

Hello...I’ve missed chatting to myself Wink (thanks for chiming in Maddy, K.A.T. and Mabsy!) so I wanted to followup and tell anyone who’s interested in losing their pastey paleness that I’ve tried the new product from Jergen’s called “Natural Glow” and it’s awesome! No freaky orange Oompa-Lompa skin, no streaks, no blotches or dark patches around your knees/elbows/ankles. I’ve only used it twice but already I’m getting a great-looking “glow” to my skin – it’s not really a tan, per se. It’s more like you’ve gotten a touch of sun and are simply glowing with good health!! So far, the only place I’ve found it here in the U.S. is at my Walmart ($5.99USD per tube) although according to the latest issue of Allure mag, it wasn’t supposed to go on sale till next month.... Anyway, it’s already gotten a ton of rave reviews on MUA, so click here if you want to read more: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=61820/natural_glow/Jergens/Self_Tanners/

Carrie -

I just saw this at my Walmart the other day and was tempted.

Do you use this on your face and body or just one or the other?

This does look really nice!

Maria

So far I’m only using it on my body (at this point, mainly my legs and arms because I’ve been breaking out the short skirts, ankle pants and sleeveless tops since Spring has sprung in TX!), but a bunch of the MUA reviewers have said that they’re also applying it to their faces and report no ill effects (i.e.: no breakouts, clogged pores or allergic reactions, etc) and say that it gives a beautiful, lightly sun-kissed glow to their faces so I’ll probably give it a go on my face a little later, but first I want to gauge exactly how “tanned” I get per application and then how often I’ll need to reapply to maintain my desired results.

What seems to set this stuff apart is the way that the color develops gradually over a period of days (kinda like a *real* tan, if you were to bask upon the beach for a couple hours each day to build your tan) so if you happen to have missed a spot or created a streak during application, it’s not obvious like it would be with a self-tanner that works in a matter of hours so you can go back and correct the mistake the next time you apply it -- it's way more "forgiving" during application then the average fake-bake...not to mention that applying and maintaining your fake-bake color is simply an aggrevating chore! I don't know about y'all, but if I'm using a self-tanner that doesn't have a "color guide" (i.e.: the stuff isn't pigmented so you can see how/where you've applied it) then I'm a nervous wreck waiting for the color to develop to be sure I haven't given myself a bunch swirl marks or streaks or end up with freakishly dark elbows, knees and knuckles Shock which means I can't set foot in public until the 'tan' wears off and I look like a normal person again!!!

The other great thing about this stuff is that it’s actually a pretty decent moisturizer, too – the other shimmer lotions I’ve tried have left *a lot* to be desired in terms of their skin-quenching abilities!! This stuff allows you to kill three birds (i.e.: self tanner, moisturizing lotion, shimmer lotion) with one stone and at less than $6USD, even if it turns out you don’t like it or it doesn’t work for you, you haven’t really invested a fortune in it like with some of the ‘prestige’ fake-bake products like Decleor (my all-time fave), Lancome or Clarins. Another thing – the Jergen’s Natural Glow comes in two formulas: ‘Fair’ for those of us who are “melanin-ally challenged” and “Medium” for those with a bit more pigment. IMHO, the only thing that stops this stuff from being the ultimate holy grail self-tanning/bronzing product for all of us ‘albinos’ is that it doesn’t appear to contain an SPF so you’d have to slap on a layer of sunscreen.

So anyway, for the EDS members residing in the northern hemisphere where warmer weather is on its way (or already here!), while you're busy rotating your heavy winter wardrobe with your breezy spring/summer fashions, Ms. Lemming says: you need to go out and buy this stuff -- NOW!!!!!

Sincerely,
Gorgeous and Glowing Very Happy Wink

i finally found this stuff [jergens natural glow] in the local walgreens tonight. after carekate PMed me about it, i was very excited. it's about time that someone came out with a product like this. moisturizing with a bit of self tanner so you can't screw up so bad. when i lived in florida, i tried almost every self tanner there was (being the only pasty redhead within a 500 mile radius, i felt ugly). unfortunately, all that came from that was my my friends with a frown on their face, monday morning when id come to school freshly self-tanned saying "cait, did you try another self-tanner?" yes, orangy, streaky, smelly, the works.

i was actually recently considering trying to make my own part moisturizer part self tanner (as the only good results from self tanning i had was using very expensive tanning bed bronzer products). luckily jergens natural glow came out just in time! i will give a review in a few days once i've used this stuff a few times.

carekate, a few questions: do you find that if you use this more than once a day you get a better tan/glow? also, have you noticed that after a while the color plateaus and you can't get any darker (the jergens website seems to imply that it will plateau)? last, do you think youll move onto the darker natural glow and see results? thanks, and thanks for telling me about this stuff!

Is that natural glow that was advertised on television years ago? It used to be a powder on a corny tv ad when I was little. But, perhaps it is making a comeback as a bronzer. Should find out.
