I haven't really been an exfoliator...any time i've tried, i end up breaking out. Overall, i've been pretty happy with my skin using Decleor products, but i suppose i have days when it looks dull. While reading about Camellia Oil (i have very dry, sensitive skin), i ran into everyone posting about Epixermx and exfoliating. Do you think exfoliating is necessary? |

Yes, I do think exfoliation is necessary (but that's only because I've become a recent convert ). Exfoliating may cause breakouts in the short term, but in the long term I think it definitely helps prevent breakouts.
That said, I only think gentle exfoliation is necessary on a regular basis (except those with really dry skin so that could be you!). I don't think everyone need go as far as epidermx though. Just my two cents |

So do you just use a facial scrub of some sort? |

No, my skin is quite sensitive and facial scrubs just do not agree with me. They make my skin look angry and I think they do more harm than good. At the moment I am using Dr Hauschka Cleansing Cream, morning and night. Although it kinda looks like a scrub, its not meant to be used as a scrub - you knead it and press it into the skin, rather than scrubbing as such. The only way I can describe the result is that my skin looks *polished*. I haven't yet really expirienced the glow that other people report getting from it yet but I can safely say that my skin does look better and I haven't really had any breakouts since using it. (Though its getting close to that special time of the month, so who knows?)
I've heard great things about Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant too. I know Cindi likes it although I think she may find it too drying for everday use though.
As you have dry skin, I would wait for a recommendation from someone for a gentle exfoliator safe to use on your skin type. Mine is combination so what works for me might not work for you. But from reading past reviews, I think the Dermalogica DM is a pretty safe bet! |

I have dry, sensitive skin that is prone to dermatitis. Harsh exfoliants make my dermatitis flareup. I had an allergic reaction to Dr H CC and the Dermalogica DM made me very dry and irritated.
Now I just used a baby wash cloth to wipe the cleanser off at night. It actually help get the dry flakies off. |

I've tried scrubs. I do use Estee Lauder Mirco-D around my nose area really helps with blackheads. But just around my nose.. I think chemicals exfoliants are better then scrubs. BUT YES please do something to get that dead skin OFF! very important |

It's a necessity for me. Using Retin-A regularly, I find I have to exfoliate to get rid of all the skin that "flakes off" since it increases cell turnover so dramatically. I use either the Adrien Arpel Enzyme Cleanser (dissolves the flakes)or I mix CSRx Polishing Grains up with rice bran oil for a nice moisturizing exfoliator. |

My skin is much to sensitive to exfoliate. I made the mistake as a teenage (though, i'm only 20 now) to try a scrub as a night wash, and my skin would break out in rashes because it was much too harsh. I use cetaphil GENTLE cleanser at night..and that is all. the emollients in it lift any dead skin off...i wish i could use something more to exfoliate..but i don't want to ruin my gentle skin:( |

I am using Decleor - i like the oils a lot, especially the Iris and Neroli. The one made specially made for dry skin - Angelique - for some reason my skin doesn't like that one. I would say Neroli is my favorite. I like several of the moisturisers...Hydra Floral is light and soaks in quite easily, the Nutra Delice Ultra Nourishing or Meltingly soft is thick and rich - and is good except around my eyes. The Harmonie i just started using a sample and i really like - that's for sensitive skin. I've used the Vitorama cream as well, and it's ok, but not my favorite. I think i might even like the Harmonie best now. Hope that helps... |

You know what i'm saying.. if i don't use retin-A I feel like my skin is dull and old. I need to flake.. hehe |

Yes, they are rather costly, but they last quite a while...and to finally find something that helps with dryness, it was worth it to me.
I have only bought through EDS thus far, and they have been very generous with samples. I've not asked for specific things, but with every order, i've gotten several sample items. |

I have recently started exfoliating and since have been getting breakouts. I was told it's because after the dry skin comes off, the impurities need somewhere to go. I was warned about the breakouts ahead of time but was guaranteed that it would pay off in long run with more even skin tone and less breakouts.
I use Jan Marini papaya mask, which is non abrasive because it is an enzyme product. Hopefully that beakouts will end soon. After years of using bar soap, I guess I have alot of dead skin! |

Oh dear, I hope it does pay off for you in the long term mollmarie. How long have you had the breakouts for now? Have you seen any improvement at all? |

I seem to have good days and bad. Some days my face looks smooth and even, others red and broken out. It's been about a month. I use the bioclear cream every other night. The next morning is when I seem to have the breakouts. My face seems to be getting drier also. It's been a cold winter here though. I am not sure if it's weather or product.
I am getting a facial next week. I hope it helps.
How long should the breakouts continue? I want to be optimistic, but it's hard! |

I'm sorry I've never heard of bioclear before - I don't even know what it is Perhaps someone else can help....? Not much help but I can say that from my own experience, when I first started to exfoliate I did get a few pimples, but they cleared up within the week... |

Have you tried Decleor PhytoPeel. It does exfoliate your skin. I don't rub the cream off after few minutes like the direction says. I leave it on like for 5 minutes and then just wash it off. you can use a wash cloth to remove it also. |

I think it is definitly necessary. Especially as you get older and your skin doesn't turn over as quickly as it did when you were younger. It is also important to remember that exfoliants do not have to be mechanical (exp. scrubs) They also can be chemical exfoliants such as AHA that can be gentler than mechanical exfoliants. |

Absolutely - very necessary. Not only does it get rid of the old dead skin cells that make your face look dull, it can also help absorption of the product (logically since there is no layer of dead skincells on top).
My faves have been:
Dr Hauschka Cleasing Cream (as if you didn't know that )
Dermalogica Microfoliant
PTR Botanical Buffing Beads
Phytomer Gommage Marin
I've also just bought an exfoliating mask from Montagne Jeunesse (sp?) and I'm really liking that as well. It's a bit rough so you have to be very gentle but it smells *so* gorgeous (peaches!) and makes the skin look very healthy afterwards as well. I've still got to look into the ingredients and decide if I'd use it regularly given the harshness though. |

I'm getting some great feedback here. I ordered the Camellia Oil, and they are sending a sample of Epidermx - so i will try that and see if it does anything for me... |

I recently purchased Epidermx (got a couple of samples first and was very pleased with the results so now waiting on the full size to come through). What I was wondering is this (possible stupid question coming up)...
Epidermx feels quite harsh on the skin - like tiny grains of sand, and you have to rub and rub to get the 'balling' effect - so is it bad to be doing this to your skin a couple of times a week? |
