I've liked using glycolic acid peels and have been looking into other products containing it. There are quite a few creams containing 5-12% glycolic acid that seem to be meant to leave on your face. I've been using 10-30% in peels (leave on for 3-10 minutes without problem) but if I left that on I'd be burned to death. Are these creams higher pH? Does this mean it is the acidity and not the glycolic acid component itself that hurts the cells? Why are they safe to leave on?
Thanks? [/quote] |

It is safe to leave them on because they're buffered....i.e. the difference is in the pH, not the concentration....
DO NOT try it with your peel solution!!!! |

My facialist swears by the MD formulations glycolic acid cream. I think it is 12%
I use it on and off. I am using it right now and like it, the only problem is then I don't use my vit c because I am assuming that would be too harsh. Does anyone know if there is a benefit to using a vit c product over a glycolic acid product? |

I have been told by my dermatologist that they are compatible and that the glycolic acid aids absorption of the L-ascorbic.
The ascorbyl palmitate is oil soluble and is well absorbed. A recent study by (I think) U. North Carolina showed the AP is well absorbed and is especially compatible with vit E (forms the active component in vivo). It also tends to be less irriting for sensitive skin. Mine is not sensitive and I've used Skinceuticals 20 and Cellex-C without any problems.
Thanks for the info on the glycolic acid products I think one of these will be the next product I buy. |

Wow! So you don't think a glycolic acid cream and vit C would be too harsh? Thanks for the info. I guess I could try it and see |

Gaby: I had wondered that but it may be that it just has to be the right pH.
Anyone else here know. |

I am currently using CellularSkin RX vit C, and Age-Limit Advanced ReFinishing Serum (also from cellularskin). Age-Limit Refinishing serum contains both glycolic and lactic acids, at a 10% concentration, with a PH of 3.5. I use the Age-Limit every day. Actually, their literature suggests using the Age-Limit first, and then apply vit C afterwards, to increase penetration of C into the skin. I did not do that, since I applied the AHA at night, and the vit. C during the day.
The results were great. No irritation or dryness. |

I've used AHAs and vitamin C serums together and have not found this to be too harsh at all. On the contrary, what sharky's dermatologist says makes sense. The AHAs exfoliate the dead skin cells thereby giving a more receptive surface for the vit C (i.e. the vit C is better aborbed). |
