I suspect that there are some people who may be confused about the difference between the Outbox and the Sentbox folders in the private messaging system on the forum.
I have in the recent weeks (and plenty of times in the past as well) received many email notifications about getting a private message only to log in and find that there are none waiting. I suspect that I am not the only one. Therefore I thought I'd just post and clarify, to the best of my understanding, how the different folders in your private messaging area work.
The Outbox is where the messages sit after you click on the "send" button. They sit there until they are picked up by the recipient of the message. If you clear out your Outbox then you are deleting the messages and the person/people you sent them to will NOT receive them (good feature if you wrote something you shouldn't have ).
The Sentbox is where the Outbox messages are automatically moved to once they have been picked up by a user.
Moral of the story: only delete messages from your Outbox if you have changed your mind and you do not want the person to receive the message when they log in.
ps. I'm making this post a sticky for a week so that it doesn't drift to the bottom without people seeing it. After that it'll be a normal post. |

I'm Guilty! Thank you Mabsy for posting this! I totally deleted a bunch of messages in my outbox, thinking I was "cleaning them out", like with my email. Geeze, people probably thought I was being a jerk & just not replying to their PM! Sorry! |

I rarely receive any PMs anyway (or I guess send any too ) but would have otherwise probably been guilty of this! |

Oh yeah, this took me a while to figure out as well. Not sure how and when that happened but I am pretty sure I was "delete happy" at some stage too
I particularly don't like that this part of the system is not intuitive. I think mainly because I worry that there is someone out there who thinks I'm ignoring them, when in fact I never got their message. On the other hand, it's nice to have access to the Outbox and be able to edit and add to messages that have not yet been read... |

I had some problem with PM members lately. I sent my PM at the end of April and I checked about 10 days later, the message still sat in the outbox not sending. Actually I PM somebody around noon time today and checked 10 hours later. The message still sat in the outbox. I deleted the old one and resent then it was sent and placed in the sent box. |

Yep - that's correct. That means all is working just fine apart from the person who is not checking their messages When you see the message move from the Outbox to the Sentbox that means that the message was read by the recipient. |

So, if the message sits in my outbox it did not meant it's not been sent. It meant the LAZY recipient did not read???
Thank you!!! |
