two seasons ago, my friend was good enough to make it to the American Idol 2nd round which took place in Hollywood. He told me that throughout his first round, there were 5000 people lined up which they took the first 2000 people. Then the 2000 they were divided in group and sing/interview infront of the directing producers. And once they pass that round, they again have to sing/interview for the excutive producers, and then finally 100-200 people made it to the simon, paula and randy round that was to be televised.
This made me feel as entertaining as it is to see those horrible singers on tv, but its kinda mean that they pick these horrible singers giving them false hope that they actually have a hope of becoming the american next idol. Why? because they pass the 1st two rounds, beating out thousands of people to sing in front of simon, randy and paula. While the producers are just thinking how to make a funny, good reality show. |

Glad you posted this, this is a bit ridiculous. If they're letting these people who can't obviously sing just for ratings, they very well may be passing up someone who has the potential and talent. How sad. Don't get me wrong, it's funny to watch some of these individuals, but I was under the impression that everyone got a chance to sing in front of Paula, Simon and Randy. |

I knew it! That's exactly what I thought they were doing. It IS mean and they obviously do it for ratings ... but I'm sure those people all sign loads of releases and are aware, on some level, that they are being used for entertainment, but not the good kind. |

seeing some of those terrible singers i really got the impression that the judges get to see everyone. but given the huge amount of participants i doubt it. so apparently they kept some just for the ratings. as long as they dont miss the real good ones. |

the thing is,when there are 5000 people waiting in line they can't and dont have the time to listen to everyone. So its all on a first come first serve basis. If the strange ones all are in line before the cut, then AI would miss alot f good ones. The good ones either have to stay up all night for the line or go to another place to audition. That's why my friend did.
When he first went to the NY audition, he came back without even getting any auditions because there were so many before him. So he flew 2 days earlier before the Austin Texas audition and literally slept at the audition place for a spot to be heard. |

As I was checking out from the grocery store, my eye caught US Weekly or something like those magazines saying that AI was already fixed before the season starts. So basically all these viewers watching and calling to vote don't even count. I'm sure this isn't too far fetched from the truth. |

I dont know about the American Idol here are fixed..its kinda hard to pick who gets to be selected since most of the contestants are all normal, average people.
I know in China there's this program called Supergirls, its exactly like American Idol except its all girls. And the winner is half depended on the voters. So the voters usually text their votes in just like here. But the difference is, in China it is so easy to change your number because you are basically buying another sim card. A sim card costs about 10RMB=1.2938USD and they dont need to sign any contracts like here. It is basicallly like pay as you go type of thing. Anyhow, whichever the contestant is the richist they would just buy millions of sims card and hire people to use the sim card and vote for them. It is so common. There were alot of news about how the last girl who won did that.
But i think its hard for you to cheat or have a fixed winning of AI. Everyone doesn't have that easy of an access to change or buy gazillion numbers. |

Well who do they really need to tell exactly where the votes fall? They can announce who stays and who goes home as they feel if you really think about it. It's not as if the general public wants records and documents of how the votes were tallied.
I don't know to be honest, there have been a few times where I sit there and go....um, is this crap fixed of what because no way is so and so better than so and so...just my opinion |

I've wondered about that and I'm not surprised. There are a lot of people (like me) who just watch the audition shows. |

I don't watch American Idol because it is set up to humiliate people. Just because someone volunteers for the humiliation doesn't make it okay. Jennifer Hudson is a good reason to not take the opinion of the judges as the final word on someones talent. |

I thought they were soo mean to some of the people. The really didn't need to call them names and tell them how they looked like creatures and stuff. There is a point when its just cruel. I can understand telling the cocky lady that she really just can't sing can be funny but telling people that the are ugly is something that is just wrong. |

I guarantee AI is about putting an entertaining show that advertisers will buy commercials on. Period. It has nothing to do with finding the next star, nothing to do with finding the best singer, definitely nothing to do with saving people's personal feelings. The people who audition are seen as props. It's a business, and entertainment is the product. That'. It.
Why do people do such a thing to others? If your livelihood and children's home and education relied on your working on such a show, you might do it, too.
AI has nothing to do with what it markets itself as. That's just hype. And it is perfectly reasonable and expectable that the results have nothing whatsoever to do with the audience votes. That, too, is an "interactive- marketing" technique. There is fine print in all AI finalists' contract that results will be decided by the producers.
I'm sorry, but I worked in the entertainment industry for 25 years.
That said, it is an entertaining show. I can't watch it (for the above reasons), but it can be a great boon for a handful of people out of the thousands that line up. |

Sidda, I don't know about the American Idol, although I suspect it may be the same as Oz since the Australian Idol is based on AI but here in Oz, the winner is guaranteed a recording contract so I can't imagine the producers would want any winner that is not the favourite of the people, can't sing and hasn't the charisma to sell records. |

Absolutely. They will deliver a star. Even a handful of stars. But the rest are not so much as a blip on their radar screen.
The auditioners think they are aware of what criticism/feedback they may get. But when they do get rejected -- we saw some of the terriby hurt feelings and wounded souls. So unnecessary. Just mean.
All in a day's work. Just footage. |

It's written in the contracts that the finalists sign that the producers can override the public vote and they have to deal with it. So who knows if the winners from past seasons were actually winners.
I stopped watching the show after the first season, mainly because I found out about the screening process and I think it's horrible they get people's hopes up, so that's probably why the folks that can't sing think they have a chance. They're one of 100-200 or so out of 10,000 sometimes that get picked to audition in front of the judges on television. Especially what happened this season with Simon insulting the way contestants looked. Ridiculous. I can't believe people watch that and laugh. |

I agree they were too mean with some of the contestants - and some of they looked mentally challenged, and they put them on just to make fun of them. |
