Hi

my sisters workmate's hair is falling out when she washes it, not majorly but noticable enough. I suggested she try some silica supplements to help internally and said i would ask my forum for their ideas - are their shampoos to address this??

thanks
nicola

The first thing to do is try to identify what is causing her hair loss and what type of hair loss it is and how long it's been going on for.
Is it falling from the roots or breaking off? (Is there a hair bulb attached to it?) Hair that is breaking off with no hair bulb is easier to treat in that the hair is still growing and its a case of improving the condidtion if the hair generally. Is it actually thinner - is she just having a 'moult' believe me this does happen! Has she recently had a chemical treatment on her hair?
If its falling from the root then remember people do lose more hair sometimes than others, and its perfectly natural to lose anything between 50 to 100 hairs a day.
Has she gone through any hormanal disturbances in the last few months, eg (depending on her age, coming on or off the contraceptive pill, menopause, miscarriage, pregnancy/birth or stress of some sort?
Are there any other changes that are new, for instance is her skin breaking out more, has she put on weight, gained more body hair, sweating more - all may indicate a hormonal upset and need checking by a doctor (likely to be nothing serious so dont' panic her!). Stress can cause hair loss - its something to do with the excess of adrenalin having no where to go and being converted in the body to other hormones which are responsable for things such as hair loss. It may be nutritional - how is her general health, has she good nails for example?
While she's trying to find all this out she can do several things to help herself, taking a good all round supplement, using a very mild, preferably sulfate free shampoo (SLS has been indicated in some cases of hair loss), gentle conditioner and massaging her scalp to improve blood flow.
Three ports of call depending on the problem:
The Doctor
A Knowledgeable hair dresser
A Trichologist (a hair 'doctor').
Worth noting that usually most cases of minor hair loss do sort themselves out over a period of time, but if she has any other symptoms (like those mentioned above) don't be fobbed off by the doctor!

Hope that helps

Smile

*Definitely* get her to try Nioxin. This is a really good shampoo for people with exactly those problems. They used to sell kits of it here that actually came with a little shower drain filter so that you could see the difference the Nioxin range made over time to hair loss. Sounds gimmicky but this stuff really does work. I *did* see a difference in how much hair I lost when I was using the Nioxin shampoo/conditioner combo.

Also, there are various supplements that can help to strengthen hair and these would be worth looking into. I go through times when my diet is not all that it should be and I do then notice a difference in my hair.

If the hair loss is abnormal/excessive then she should really see a Dr about it though.
