Today a friend and I were talking about how using new skincare products initially gives (literally) glowing results but after a several of months return mediocre, if not downright negative (breakouts and irritation), effects. Any thoughts on this? |

I find that my skin gets used to products and I dont' get the results that I initially did but I found that more with highstreet brands rather than spa grade products and I have a few favorites that I use whatever - Vitamin C and Avene sunscreen. For exfoliators and moisturisers I have a 'cycle' of favourites that I alternate every few months rather like most people do with their shampoo. That way I find I get the best results from each product and have a good excuse to try new ones and indulge my 'habit' . I think actually what I do find is that sometimes I get used to my skin feeling or looking so much better that there isn't such a major comparison to 'before' so rather the product not working as well its more I've got use to my skin looking better! |

I'm pretty much like Lucia. I do know what you mean about products appearing to lose effectiveness though I have never ever had breakouts from a product a few months after starting use. However, in my case that "lack of futher effectivness" has been more a matter of getting used to how skin looks and still expecting a further improvement. Like Lucia, I tend to cycle my products and therefore don't have this problem anymore. I don't really cycle them on purpose, I just like trying new things - but, either way, it works out well. |

Thank you Lucia and Mabsy for your input
Sigh...as much as I love trying out products I sometimes wish I could just settle down with one routine. My maturing skin is a lot less resilient now and less able to cope with a lot of experimenting. The spirit is willing but the skin is weak
I did consider the possibility that the product is still doing its work but the rate of improvement has decreased so that it is less noticeable. Reminds me of the Law of Diminishing Returns I should have taken "before" photos for comparison purposes.
So cycles, huh. The only thing I do in cycles is changing moisturizers to suit the climate. But you both made a good point - something I will keep in mind as I reconfigure my routine. I think my basic problem is I can't understand the language my skin now speaks
Mabsy, I'm glad your skincare adventures are working out well for you. Re the breakout problem - that's actually my friend's experience. She was using Proactive for years then felt she needed an upgrade so she switched to Philosophy's Makeup Optional kit. She was good for a few months, she loved the results until recently.
Lucia, what is your skin type/concerns? Would you mind sharing how and what products you cycle?
Thanks again ladies, and sorry for the long post. |

crazyskin - If your friend is still having problems with acne, she may want to try MD Forte glycolic products.
What skin issues are you dealing with that haven't been resolved? |

Carzyskin - Ok well my skin is combination and I used ot suffer form mild acne on my Tzone and can still breakout if I'm not careful. I use the following everyday whatever - PSF Skincare Vit C and Avene Moisturiser.
The list I cycle are: -
MD Forte/MD Formulations cleanser, Vit A/E Lotion and eyecream (this is what cleared my skin up!!!)I go back to this usually in the winter when my skin is more prone to breaking out or is looking tired and dull.
If I'm off the MDF ranges I use a sulfate free cleanser (currently Cory Blossom wash off cleanser), and the, champagne facial spray, Lustre and Nectar from Rosa y fruta made up for me (see website). At night I use the Cory cleanser to remove make-up then Dr Hauschka Cleansing cream followed by PSF SKincare O2 serum at night under anything else as this too keeps my skin really clear!
Other items I rotate on a regular basis are - PSF eyecream, PTR Power K eyegel, Decleor Hydrating eyecream - I rotate these depending on how my skin is! I also rotate Epidermx and PSF Pumpkin Enzyme mask (not when I'm on the MDF ranges).
Hope that helps!!! |

Hi Lucia thanks for taking the time to write that detailed post! Yes, it helped *a lot*. Gosh, that Rosa Y Fruta stuff sounds lovely...
Hiya, m.april thanks for the info, I will relay that tip to my friend. Actually I am considering glycolics too but I'm afraid to try them because I don't tolerate AHAs that well. I've been meaning to PM you to ask what glycolic product line you would recommend coz you mentioned your success with them on another thread. My main issues right now are acne scars, decongestion and trying to achieve a balance between controlling sebum production and adequate moisture. Next goal to take up is finding a Vit C eye product, then anti-aging stuff. Been trying to introduce new products slowly because of sensitivity so my progress has been kinda slow. Any advice on my possible foray into glycolics? |

Hi crazyskin - I've used MD Forte Skin Rejuvenation Lotion II in the past with great success. It contains 20% glycolic acid as well as retinol, and refines the skin as well as prevents acne. Now I'm using IS Clinical Firming Complex. It has much lower (5%) AHA content, yet smoothes my skin, shrinks my pores, prevents acne, and also helps with pigmentation problems.
If you're really sensitive, I'd go with the ISC FC. I'm also using ISC Super Serum (15% Vit.C and other stuff), but will switch to SkinCeuticals Phyto+ (lightens pigmentation) and CE Ferulic (Vit.C and other stuff) only because ferulic claims to offer even better sun protection than regular C sera. It's a little oilier than the Super Serum, so if it doesn't fade my freckles faster, I'm going back to Super Serum, which does the job of both with the convenience of only one product to apply rather than two.
ISC Pro Heal Serum (Vit.C, retinol and more) is good too. I'm using a sample I received as a spot treatment on lines and discolorations.
The most important thing I'm using is Avene SPF50+ sunscreen, which contains Tinosorb -- a very stable sunscreen active that won't be degraded easily by makeup ingredients. |

Thank you m.april I appreciate your advice! I will certainly look into MD Forte and ISC lines. I have to say I'm already favoring the ISC coz the lower % glycolic will be less likely to irritate my skin. I also like that it addresses multiple issues. The MD Forte's % glycolic and retinol kinda scares me. The one time I tried retinol I felt like my skin was burning and I broke out in red spots and blotches.
I've been using Skinceuticals Serum 10 as an entry into Vit C products. It has helped fade some discoloration but my acne scars are still quite noticeable. I'm considering the CE Ferulic too as my next step up. Sunscreen is now a habit with me and I believe it has also helped reduceI the pigmentation. |

I haven't tried the MD Forte myself but I keep reading that it's the next step up from MD Formulations. The MD Formulations products thus have much lower %s. |

RYF products gave me severe acne outbreak. My skin was fine until I started adding those products to my regime. |
