Done! http://virginiaculler.com/clips/ELLE_Article.pdf
She quoted me in it twice, so of COURSE I had to scan it for my website! But this version makes it look like it's all about me, haha, which it's SO not -- but since it's for my professional clips file, I had my boyfriend highlight the parts that have me bubbling about my DIY stance to make me look more important.
And it should go without saying that my quotes are just my opinion -- I know there's a whole range of DIY-ers with different comfort levels about what we concoct. My quotes in there express my stance for my own DIY creations.
I don't actually think the article gets into as much substance as it could have, given what many of us know about the DIY world. But it was still pretty fun to get to gab with the gal from ELLE about it. Enjoy! |

Thanks for the link Ginnie! I'm not a DIYer but I luv GoW and, obviously, EDS. A great big thanks for EDS ladies for all the knowledge, details, drama , info, and sharing. My DS is going to have such a better start at taking care of her skin than I did. I "thought" I did the right things (having always used s/s and moisturizer), but EDS took me to the next 3 levels I'm glad it's getting some recognition as well as GoW for great quality products. |

Bellezza, could it be because you don't have the PDF reader installed to automatically open PDFs in your browser? It works fine for me, but who knows what the differences are in our system. If you download Adobe Reader free from adobe.com, that might solve it. |

Hi! I finally read the article. Ginnielizz, your quote reminded me of my apeel incidents .
I thought the writer's and skinceutical's view regarding mixing your own vitamin c serum is mostly correct. that's why i never attempt to make my own and won't buy c serums from small DIY companies anymore. and mixing a bit each day prior to application is definitely not something i want to do.

Very cool, great news for both GOW and EDS! Wow Ginnie how did you wind up getting interviewed for this! I'm a very limited DIY girl. There are somethings I'll never buy again because I can whip them up on my own but when it comes to the more hi-tech stuff, I'll leave it to more knowledgable folk than I.
Congratulations! |

Why did Elle magazine show a size 000 model with a spilled DIY creation? |

I didn't see the picture but the article IMO was not promoting DIY but their advertisers, in a round about way. |

Completely agree Frodo! It seemed to give the impression that DIY was dangerous. I don't DIY much myself, but when people do, it seems there are a lot of questions asked b4 attempting it.
The bottom line is that there are pros and cons to both DIY and branded products and for each product category. You just need to be a smart consumer and do a little research on both b4 making any decisions. |

The chick who interviewed me just tracked me down in a private message here on the forum. Pleasant surprise!
I totally agree that the writer was biased. My own point of view happens to mostly agree with hers, but we talked for a good two hours or so, and the quotes she took of mine were very much selected to drive home her somewhat skeptical point of view, IMO. Which is fine, because I did say those things, and mean them, and they're not taken wildly out of context or anything -- it is what it is.
Like Kris said, I really do think most higher-tech DIY stuff is sketchy -- making scrubs and essential oil blends is one thing, but making glycolic peels is another! And not to undermine the power of essential oils, but the potential to burn yourself or otherwise do real harm just seems way higher to me with the more complicated DIY formulations. So I'm inclined to stay away from playing with a whole chemistry set in your kitchen, without some chemistry background. I actually really want to take a couple community college classes in chemistry so I can understand certain concepts like solubility, absorption, etc.
Anywho. Like I said earlier, this writer barely scratched the surface of the whole DIY topic, and it was clear she was bringing in her own perspective. But I still think it's really cool that all these sites (and a few readers!) got their plugs. After all, it's not every day that you get to talk about skincare in a magazine. And this was less advertising-obvious than some people seem to have theorized -- if you read it, it really is a curious look at the DIY phenomenon, and not just a big plug for some company. This seems to have more substance than that New Beauty mag people are talking about in another thread, though I can't say for sure (as I refuse to pay $30 for FOUR issues!). |
