I read about the different results on the collagen formation or skin regeneration that glycolic and lactic acids have. From memory lactic acid causes less/no scarring in collagen formation compared to glycolic. Is this right? Could somebody explain this one to me?
Thanks! |

Liza, did you ever receive a (PM?) response to this query? |

No I don't see a PM regarding this. It says, "no new messages" If you sent me a PM, thank you for that! Feel free to answer or not, I wouldn't expect you to answer the same thing twice. Very bothersome I know! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

My understanding is that lactic acid is milder than glycolic acid so better tolerated by sensitive skin. I'm not sure if there is any appreciable difference in collagen stimulation rate. I thought that both being AHA's help to dissolve the "glue" that holds dead skin cells together, thus making it easier to slough off that dull skin and reveal fresher skin underneath. As for collagen formation, I think this happens only when you go for deeper peels. So maybe if you do a 40% glycolic vs. a 40% lactic acid, the glycolic being stronger, it will remove more skin and then stimulate more repair, thus thickeing the skin.
Remember that anytime you use AHA's regularly, you really MUST use sunscreen or you run the risk of developing hyperpigmentation problems. |

I don't know if this will answer your specific question, but I posted a "primer" on the different acids a while back at this link: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7046&highlight=lactic+acid If nothing else, it helps clear up the differences between lactic and glycolic acids, anyway.... |

I have has good luck with glycolic peels (35%) especially now that I am using the O2 Rescue serum immediately after.
I tried lactic acid at a lower concentration but got a rash from it.
I seem to be allergic to a lot of products but glycolic did not give me a rash.
Carekates previous message (follow link is good). |

Thank you all for your response. Very helpful! I personally prefer lactic acid myself and I'm trying to find more studies on lactic acid and vs. glycolic acid. ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |
