OK, maybe it's a UK thing, but what is "a first?" I feel like I should be excited for you, but I just don't get it. |

Yes, I think it is a UK thing. I believe it is the highest level of a degree you can get. They have levels for theirs...So, for example, we can get a BA of a BA Hons. But theirs have 4(?) different distinctions maybe. First would be the best. If I am confused on this, please feel free to correct me. |

Congratulations Guapagirl!
Like Faith explained, a first is the highest level of degree you can get.
I think it goes (all with honours):
First
Upper Second - 2:1
Lower Second - 2:2
Third
Then those who don't manage to get the honours bit just receive a 'pass'. |

Yay! First class honours! Congratulations!!!! You deserve a HUGE night out!
I think this is a similar system to the one in Australia. When you do an Honours degree here it can be 1st class (highest), 2nd A, 2nd B, and 3rd (lowest). |

Out of curiosity, do you guys have such things as valedictorians or runner-up-dictorian (forgive me, I'm drawing a blank on the official name!)?
Congrats, GG! Like Phredd44, I was also wondering what kind of "first" you might be celebrating... |

As far as I know, we don't have valedictorians (is the runner-up a saludictorian?). Some schools have Head Boy and Head Girl but I don't think it's quite the same thing. Still, that's a school thing and doesn't apply to universities. |

No, I don't imagine it is! Okay, when I read those honorary titles, I guess I don't have to tell you what my guttersnipe mind immediately thought of...? |

What's a swot?? A valedictorian is the person who graduates from high school or collage with the highest cummulative grade/s or grade-point average. |

I love how we try to figure out what the h*** we're saying in the different "country-speak". When I read Guapa's post, I was the wondering what the dang a "first" was too - and now that I know.....hhoorrrrayyyy for you Guapa - well done!!!
And, yes, Carrie, unfortunately my filthy mind went in the same direction yours did with the Head Boy/ Head Girl thing....
Valedictorian - numero uno
Saluditorian - I think is the "runner up".
Our Val. and Sal. in highschool dated for a long time.....Their kids probably would have been brilliant!!
From what I understand our Val. moved out to California, worked on a software program, made a ton of money and retired at 35......I remember thinking he was adorable, but he was very short, and my shallow-self only went for the tall boys.....that'll teach me!!!! (My husband is over 6 feet, but we're POOR!!!!! )

Thank you all!
I have such a huge hangover, I'm thinking of chickening out of tai chi (but I won't )
Carrie, a swot is someone who studies hard all the time. I think they call them geeks or nerds now, though 'boff' is popular as well.
I am quite overwhelmed by it all, especially as my late grades were much better than I expected!
Anyway, many thanks for all your good wishes.
