What's the difference between hyperpigmentation and melasma. I have these dark brown areas (they are not freckles or age spots--I have those too) under my jaw line. How do I treat these? Thks! |

I had those, too. Using Retin-A every other night with AHA serum on the off night and Vitamin C serum each AM followed by sunscreen worked for me. They were gone in about 2-3mos.I think the C serum was the key though. I tried hydroquinone lotion my doc gave me but it didn't do much and made my skin break out and itch. I use cellularskinrx.com C serum, their Age limit AHA serum, La Roche Posay Dermo-Pediatrics spf40 sunscreen and the 0.025% cream version of Retin-A. My skin is normal/combo/olive.
I have also heard that super peels (TCA, high % glycolic/lactic) can help you to get a fast start is getting rid of melasma. I haven't tried these for that though many on the board have and I'm sure will tell you about their experiences. |

What is the difference between hyperpigmentation and melasma, if any? Mine seem to be sun abuse related. I had IPL done at my derm's office last year. I couldn't really tell what, if any, difference it made. But that was before I knew about the real importance of sunscreen (I Know NOW!). I am using Neostrata's vitamin C stuff right now and I have seen some improvement but it is so expensive and if you use it twice a day, it's gone before you know it. Does anyone know if the homemade C serums work? Thanks! |

I had problems with hydroquinone. I like Better's advice it is close to what I do. I
did find that Haloxyl helps with dark spots. |

There is no homemade Vitamin C that works. First of all it has to be L-Ascorbic Acid, at the properPH level and at a concentration between 10%-20% or all it does ir moistur

The one in the DIY thread works and it is homemade. As well, I believe other forms of Vit C are being found to be effective in skincare. |
