| I'd like to get an organic sunblock with no nano zinc oxide. However, I just realized this product has no preservatives. I guess i'm in the middle of the way organic/non organic. I'm affraid a product with no preservatives will grow bacteria, yeast, etc., Anyone has a bad experience with organic product regarding this? |

| Some organic sunblock use natural plant extract as preservatives, but I'm not sure about its effect. So better check with the producers~ |

As far as I know natural preservatives are not enough to prevent bacteria, fongus, yeast, etc. to grow. I like organic products, but I really don't want to risk getting an infection  |

Hi Angy,
What product are you looking at? What are the list of ingredients?
Does the particular product you are interested in have any water in it (including hydrosols)? I believe if a product does not have water and is oil based it only needs antioxidants to prevent rancidity. Products with water must always have some sort of preservative to prevent bacteria/mold/etc. |

| amnis, i'm looking into marie veronique sunscreen. It's an oil based. However, I asked my Derma about organic sunscreens, and he doesn't recommend them! so now I'm thinking. Should I follow my Derma advice or not... |

Are you talking about the Sun Serum? ( expensive!) or the Crème de Soleil?
Do you mean your dermatologist? If so, he/she might be advising against an organic sunscreen b/c he/she is unfamiliar with the formulation and b/c it's not a sunscreen that has been drilled into dermatologist's heads to be effective (whereas they believe in the chemical sunscreens). My experience with derms, and I've seen a lot of them, is that they tend to go with what is conventional and what they've been told by major companies like Neutrogena and various pharmaceutical companies. I used to go by what my derm told me with little success until I began researching skincare and now use the purest products I can and my skin is WAY better. Yes, I do still use Tazorac but I've eliminated all products with all those filler ingredients that would aggravate my skin like none other.
Anyway, you do have to be more careful with mineral sunscreen b/c they aren't as water proof as the chemical based ones so you need to be conscientious about reapplying after swimming, sweating, etc.
I myself do not like to use chemical sunscreen but if I know I will be very active and/or swimming I will use them. My MMU has been very effective in protecting my skin from burning and even tanning. Of course I don't exactly lay out in the sun or anything but on a general daily basis it's just fine.
Also, if Marie Veronique has an "SPF" rating on their products then they most likely had it lab tested therefore making it an effective sunscreen. (Skin care companies cannot legally label their products with an SPF rating w/out having them tested and authenticated.) |

| I like the idea of natural and organic skin care, but have had bad experiences. One problem has been that brands marketed as all natural use ingredients which are just as questionable as parabens. The other problem is that these products can go off quickly, even before staten on the box. I recently found a green blob of mould in an all natural eye cream and since then, I have been a bit lost with regards to my skin care. To choose natural or well preserved is the question. |

I haven't used organic sunblock.
But I used the love lettuce from LUSH which was fresh mask without preservative. I found a green blob after 2 days when I didn't kept it in refrigerator  . |

This is a very valid topic, and one of the main reasons why I warn against organic and so called all-natural cosmetics. It's the simple fact that there are NO effective organic or all natural preservatives. The risk of infection is great with these products. The preservatives they use (if any) like citrus and essential oil based simply are not effective. tckmtracy and Smoothskin saw what sounds like "molds" growing in their products, and this is very typical.
Keep in mind also that there is nothing wrong with parabens as preservatives. They are safe to use and have a 40 year use and safety record. There is no proof whatsoever of links to cancer or any other health hazard.
Please always read the ingredients label on any product you buy. Make sure that the products you buy are PROPERLY preserved. The infection or skin reaction that you can prevent, could be your own!

I also recently had a product from an organic line develop what looked like mould...yuk! Well, it had been in check-in luggage on a few flights so was possibly exposed to extreme heat (or cold) but i've never had anything else go "off"...
Actually I frequently notice when unpacking my bag that the contents is still hot (or cold) and this is 1 to 2 hours after the flight. Of course you can't take skincare items as carry-on any more so you're stuck with letting the airline boil or freeze them, but that's a whole other topic...  |

THere are several organic/truly natural companies that produce quality products without any unnatural ingredients - Seachi, Organic Pharmacy, SimplyDivine Botanicals and products by Dr. Bob Marshall (Premier Research Labs; who also happened to be Ph.D. in BioChem). They do not use parabens, most of them use specific containers (like dark glass for oils, glass for creams, etc.). I had used them for years, some did wonders for my skin, and not once did they spoil or developed any manifestation of unfriendly bacteria.
BTW, I keep them in the bathroom medicine cabinet, not in a fridge.

You can't even take small bottles etc of skincare items AT ALL in your carry on??!! |

| I like organic but I prefer to make sure they have preservatives that work. Getting mold or something else in the cream is helpful b/c you can see. However, bacteria or other unwanted microorganisms are not visible. So how to tell if the creams are full of yucky stuff? so I guess I stay in the middle of the road btwn organic and parabens. I don't want bacteria growing on my dermis :/ |

Well, in theory you can. But the so-called security requirements differ from country to country, and I often have to fly at very short notice. It's all too much for my old brain, trying to remember which airports allow what, so I end up chucking everything in check-in, rather than risk having my skincare treasures confiscated. |

| The organic sunscreens are mainly based on natural elements and herbs and they are completely chemical free. So organic sunscreen is not harmful for your skin. organic sunscreen is the best choice for skin. |

| I never use this sunblock. But i tell you that organic sunscreens are very best for skin. Organic sunscreen lotions are becoming very popular these days because they have various good properties. organic sunscreen protects us from skin cancer, sunburns and premature aging. |

maybe put them in a little lunch tote or insulated bag in your lugage?
that should work!
I know when I do my groceries here it is hot and my gelato always melts and my dairy items are always warm from a short bus ride...yuck.
I have a lunch size cooler for my ice cream and that helps a lot.
I thought you could take cosmetics,just not large sizes of anything? |

Actually that's a really good idea! Never thought of that. And those padded insulated bag thingies would also provide protection from breakage/damage.
I will definitely give this a try ... on one of those rare occasions I have time to pack properly |

I also like the idea of organic and natural skincare, that's why I have shifted all my skincare to organic one recently. My fav brand is Eminence Organic. Its Tropical Vanilla Suncream SFP32 is really good!
Apart from face skincare, I use organic body skincare as well. The organic shampoo and body wash are without the chemical SLS. I can really feel that my skin is getting better and better after using the organic products:) |
