Hello...

I am brand new on this forum and are looking for some direction/suggestions on trying mineral makeup for the first time. I don't have any store near me that would sell this, so I am looking for an online source. I've seen many infomercials, but after searching online, it seems there are TONS of these companies and "Bare Escentuals" (sp?) may not be my best (or only) choice.

Can someone please give me some general info or point me in the correct direction? I'm also very interested in some "sample packs" or something, where I can try it out without buying a $60 kit.

Thanks in advance for your help! It it very much appreciated...

Hi Amy.
There are tons of threads here on the topic of Mineral Makeup (MMU), which provide several different sources for samples.
I've gotten samples from Pure Luxe and Mineral Essence. Aromaleigh is also highly recommended by some users lucky enough to live in the US (they don't ship internationally).
Make sure you have the proper brushes to apply your samples - good quality brushes are vital to achieving the natural look.

Hope this helps, and welcome Very Happy

Hi, I've been trying the id bare escentuals Minerals since Fall and like it. I normally use a light liquid foundation, Revlon Skinlights diffusing tint. I got the Bare Esc. kit w/ a brush and a medium beige makeup, Warmth powder (I've been using it to brighten my winter complexion, and the Mineral veil, which is like a translucent powder. It came witha video too, that i haven't watched Smile
I tend to use little makeup, so lately I've been just using concealer and a little of the powder.

I would recommend Jane Iredale or Glominerals. Both have excellent pressed powders with lots of shade selection. I didn't care for bare escentuals because it was too shiny, too messy since it was loose and I wasn't able to find a color match with their minimal shade selection.

Thanks everyone, for your responses..

I just have a few more questions and then I'm going to try and search more on the internet.

Can you tell me how to search on this message board through all of the threads? I could not find a link to search and therefore, just tried scrolling through the pages - but their are WAY TOO MANY.

I didn't even realize their was mineral makeup that was NOT loose - what are the advantages to pressed powder, besides less mess? Does it still cover just as well? Is it hard to get an even coverage? Do you still apply with a brush?

Does anyone have a webpage where you can purchase some of the products mentioned - Pure Luxe, Mineral Essence, Jane Iredale, Glominerals, etc... I searched on Goggle, and came up with various sources, but none that were the actual homepages for these companies.

Thanks a million! Amy

Hi Amy,

As others have said ... there are lots of companies out there ... and most of them sell sample sizes.

I prefer the loose minerals to the pressed powder minerals as I can control the amount of the minerals better. It seemed that with the pressed powder I was using too much ... but that's my personal preference.

I wasn't fond of the shine with BE for my face ...

I have been ordering Pure Luxe for the last several months ... worked out my best foundation "mix" [which the owner will mix up for you in the larger sizes] and am now testing to find my "perfect" blush/bronzer.

Pure Luxe is nice ... and the reason I chose it over some of the others was that ... well ... I decided that at some point you have to just stick with one! Laughing It gets too confusing getting samples from everywhere ... because each one has their own foundation colours, shadow colours, blush colours. When you're ordering online it's a bit more difficult to discern the actual colours.

It would be heaven to be near a store that carried several different brands so that you could get samples right away ... although I suspect that the brands carried in stores don't offer samples. Confused However, I'm in Canada and I have yet to find a source of loose minerals in my area ... so online is the only way I can go.

I'm very pleased with Pure Luxe, however, and the owner, Chris, is very good about recommendations and customizing.

The other thing I really like about Pure Luxe is the ease of application. There's a knack with minerals in general ... but with BE you have to buff-buff-buff ... but with Pure Luxe you don't need to do that. I think it has something to do with the bismuth in BE which isn't in Pure Luxe [i][and other brands]/i].

There is a listing there for just about every mineral makeup company out there!

Good luck

I buy all my BE makeup from this link...they always run sales (15%-20% off), plus since I'm in NC ~ I don't pay sales tax!!!! (which equates to more $$$ for mu)

I’ve been using MMU for about 5 months now and I do love it. I ordered my 1st one from Sheer Cover, did not work for me. I went to a salon where carries Jane Iredale twice to have professional put it on me. The result was better but I did not like it. Then I went to a beauty supply store twice to try Bare Mineral, did not work for me. All 3 made my face shiny, all my wrinkles showed, and enlarged my pores. Among those 3, Jane Iredale was the best so I purchased some products and using it while browsing internet to get more info on MMU. I found out Bismuth was in all 3 products I tried and it’s the killer. Bismuth was the one made my face shiny, showed wrinkles, and enlarged my pores. Jane Iredale’s Liquid Foundation does not contain Bismuth but I found its texture was very hard to spread it evenly on my face.

About 3 months ago I discovered Larenim. Its ingredients are very simple, Mica, Micronized Titanium Dioxide(coated with Dimethicone), Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides. Almost all of its products have the exactly same ingredients, just different ratio. I ordered some samples (I told Kirsten, the owner, what color I used with Jane Iredale and she matched her color for me.) Larenim’s powder is finer then other 3 and works for me very well. My face is not shiny, my wrinkles do not show that much, and my pores looked smaller. I had many compliments after using it.

During the time I’m using Larenim I went to a MMU training class held by another MMU brand. I asked the instructor about Bismuth and she told me the main purpose for Bismuth is for its adhesive character. It makes the MMU stays longer and better on your face. After the class I tried Jane Iredale and Larenim on either side of my face and I did find Jane Iredale stays better and Larenim “flys” more.

To people who want to try MMU I have few suggestions:

1. Browsing on the internet and get as many application tips as possible. Try all tips and create your own.
2. Less is better. Don’t try to cover everything on one layer. Now I put 2 – 3 layers for my foundation and 2 layers for my finishing powder.
3. Use some kind of mist after you put on the MMU to help your MMU settles in. I’m using Jane Iredale’s D2O Hydration Spritz.

My MMU “application technique” is getting better now and I’m think of trying Jane Iredale again to see if I’ll get a better result. One other thing about Jane Iredale is that few of its products contains color from dead beetle. (I don’t remember the terminology) It’s not good for vegans.

I have a question about MMU for people who using it for a long time: Every day when I put it on I always hold my breath because I’m afraid if I inhale it everyday even very small amount it’ll harm my health. Is it a legit concern or I worry too much?

Cheryl

The dead beetle ingredient is carmine. I do find that Jane Iredale has great coverage as does Glominerals. I got the Jane Iredale antioxidant hydrating spritz and sometimes use it as a night time moisturizer since my skin is already oily. Good luck with your search - you've received a lot of great information!

I also find Glominerals to be great for coverage and isnt too badly priced.
I prefer the pressed powder as it is easy to apply and isnt messy. however if you are using mineral makeup for the mineral quality then it is interesting to know that inthe list of ingredient in the pressed powder there are more preservatives then there are actual minerals Shock
the glominerals kabuki brush is also excellent for applying with
