I'm going on a cruise Dec. 11-18 and know that one thing I will definitely do is take advantage of the opportunity for some spa treatments. Since I want a tan (or the appearance of one) while in the Carribean, I was thinking this sounds good at the beginning of the cruise. Any suggestions?
First a body brushing, then oil is dripped on your body and next you have a ginger and salt scrub. After that they apply a tan cream the processes within 5 hours.
Since I never stop to do the exfoliation and then self tan at home, I figure this would be much better.... and feel so good!

What cruiseline are you going on? I just went on carnival conquest in the begining of october. very nice...found the spa a bit pricey. They wanted $70 to trim my moms bangs. They did a great job on the brides makeup |

The body scrubs are the best!! Tan or not your skin feels so heavenly after. I might also suggest lots of in between massages or reflexology to relax you & prevent total exhaustion from all of the walking, dancing & other "activities"
I was only on the "cruise from hell" in Greece but it's funny to look back on. The ship that we were supposed to be on sunk off of the coast of Africa a few months before (the crew I heard were the first to get off!). The next ship in line caught on fire & the one that they brought out of dry dock for us was used, I'm sure, in an I Love Lucy episode. The pool was empty. Our plane to Athens was late & they didn't save rooms so we ended up at sea level with portholes that were painted open. We had water sloshing around our room. Our kids had the room next to us & they were afraid to use the bathroom. The workout room had stationary bicycles without seats & the couple that got the party going (I don't know what you call them) in the disco were about 100 years old - he with a bad toupee & she with long faded dry red hair & many hopelessy outdated gowns that she poured herself into. That was only (!!!) for three nights. Then we stayed on Rhodes for a blissful week. The ship that brought us back was like a giant yacht so that was okay but lacked kid type amenities.
My husband refuses to go on another except the QE2 & I don't see that happening!!! What a hoot. It was a truly memorable vacation in more ways than one - it will forever bring a smile to my face. The funny thing was that we had "won" the trip (for 2)& when all was said & done it cost us a fortune. With 3 kids we needed 2 rooms, always 2 cabs, lots of extra food (they discovered room service in Athens & Rhodes), spending (we found out later that our daughter had been shipping the "extras" that she bought home because they wouldn't fit in her suitcases), sight seeing with a teenage boy who would rather have been anywhere else & was totally miserable & a teenage girl missing her boyfriend & a 12 year old who thought that the Las Vegas kind of dancers were the most beautiful women he had ever seen in his entire life - he was even dancing with them!! And driving by the beaches on Rhodes ("Keep your eyes peeled, Scott" re: the topless bathers).
I wouldn't have changed that trip for anything in the world. Talk about the Griswolds'
Now you have fun, Judy !! I know that you will! (Greece & Turkey, by the way, were absolutely increbible) |

Hi Judy,
I have done two cruises both at Christmas so know you will have a great time. The first time we went I had a makeover at the salon and ended up looking seriously horrid. The girl obviously had no idea what she was doing , my makeup truly was horrendous as was my hairdo.
Stick to the spa treatments and I am sure you will both enjoy and be pleased with the results.
Have a great time and wear lotssssssssss of sunscreen to protect that beautiful face. Tans are so easily faked there really is not reason to bake in the sun anymore. One of the sunless tanners I have tried and loved is Fake Bake.
Have fun and stay safe.

Over the years I have purposely avoided letting anyone do my makeup. I'm sure there are makeup artists that are fabulous, but I don't think many of them are located in the Texas Hill Country.
I definitely plan to take advantage of the skincare treatments and lots of massage! Would you believe my husband has never had a massage! I plan to be sure he is introduced to massage on this cruise, although I may be creating a monster. He is already a kinesthetic (feelings) personality and I have no doubt he'll become addicted!
I notice that the spa onboard also offers Japanese Silk facials. Don't really know what they are, but would love to hear from someone who is familiar with them.
At the first port, the private island owned by Holland America, we are renting a private cabana for the day, so will be able to relax in the shade. It's even air conditioned! Not sure how that quite works, but I'm sure it will be fun.
Our aim for this cruise is lots of relaxation so we have a balcony suite. We're not much for just sightseeing. I've found most sightseeing tours to be highly overrated. When we're in Key West, we do plan to visit Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for sure!

Leslie....
That truly does sound like the cruise from hell! Aren't you glad you hadn't paid for the cruise on top of all that!
I have been on one other cruise and it was fine. We won that one. I talk to lots of people who cruise at least once or twice a year and they absolutely love it. I would bet though that when you cruise so often, you will get a bad exerience now and then.
Oh, by the way, when you cruise next time, be sure to tell me when and where. With your cruise luck, I may want to be sure I don't make that one!

Hi Leslie,
I too had the cruise from hell with my second one but refrained from raining on Judy's parade. It was bad enough that cruises are something I will never do again and I seriously still have nightmares from it.
When she comes back I will share what happened on mine. Just thank god my first one was so awesome.

You Guys!!!!
Actually, I know that people have those experiences. I've done so much research and chatting on the internet with people who cruise and have seen special on tv about people who have had bad experiences.
Although, I do think the percentage of people who have great experiences far, far outweigh the bad one.
Both of yours sound bad enough to cause one to swear off cruising though! I'm always the eternal optomist who believes everything will go great, and it usually does.
If we had a really bad experience, my husband would probably just book a flight back home and be done with it. Of course, if you're in the Carribean, cruising between remote islands, it's not that easy to catch a flight!
JUDY
My vision is that we will have a wonderful luxurious cabin, the weather will be wonderful, we will have time to exercise daily and get spa treatments, have breakfast on our balcony, and the food will be awesome, but we won't gain a pound. That's my vision and I'm stickin' to it! Will report when I return.

Judy,
What port are you leaving from? My cruise advice is to take along Bonine (like Dramamine but doesn't make you drowsy) just in case its a little bumpy. I've been on a couple of cruises and always had it just in case. My husband took it every day even though he felt fine. I took it after the cruise for about a week because it took me that long to get my land legs back. It was a riot. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. |

We are leaving from Fort Lauderdale, FL and going down a day early to enjoy some time there. Our cruise is to the Western Carribean with stops at Half Moon Cay, Ocho Rios Jamaica, Cozamel Mexico, and Key West Florida.
Thanks for the tip on the med. I'll definitely look for it. We had no problem at all the last time we cruised the Carribean, but it never hurts to be prepared. (Don't think there is an icon with a green face or barfing. Aren't you glad?)
You may think this is funny, but my biggest concern (besides my spa treatments) is having enough water to drink. Hubby and I drink about 2 quarts each a day and we treat it with special minerals (we are health nuts). I know they give you maybe a couple of 16 ounce bottles in the suites, but don't like you to bring on a bunch of water, besides it taking up room in your luggage. Well, you can see my problem. I'm sure we can buy more water in the gift shops or pick up some when we are off the ship. I just hate to pay gift shop prices for water! Don't think I'll encounter Walmart in Jamaica, but the way they are covering the world, you never know.

judy,
I had a great time on my cruise...except for 4 people sharing a cabin. Even outside on the balcony I couldn't get away from my parents or brother.
I went to montego bay jamaica and it was ok. I took a tour where I rafted down a river and afterwards I got a cab with my brother and went shopping. I didn't like the shopping there much. I heard that Ocho Rios is much better.
In Cozumel we took a cab (flat rate, can't remember 10-20) to a local park called Chankanaab..admission was $12 ea. They have the dolphin swim there and if you book online it's half the price as the ship. They also have replicas of the mayan ruins you can walk thru or get a personal tour guide (tip only). There's shopping, and of course the beach. The beach is sandy until the shoreline where it becomes rocky. There are tons of fish so you HAVE to take snorkel gear. I rented a mask and snorkel for $5. On the beach they have some chairs to sit in...waiters come up and down the beach or you can go to the restaurants.
I have some pictures if you'd like to see them. Just pm me with email and I'll scan them and send it to you. I'd definitely recommend this spot!!! (tip:get there early, it can get busy if there's more than one ship at port) Our friends who got married on the boat have been on the same cruise 3 times and in cozumel they always go to this park.
Also in cozumel port there's a fat tuesdays, and the waiters are funny. I got a nametag that read "my name is sexy, if found drunk return me to your bed" my mom's nametag read "horney girl" We shopped and drank there until the boat was ready to leave...it was a great day |

oh yeah, no walmart in jamaica.
Our boat had fountains with water that you could fill as you like. As for buying water in the towns...depends where you go. Tourist spots you might was well buy a beer.. |

We plan to do the dolphin touch and Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios. I have friends who have seen Dunns River Falls and they say you must do it. Also, the dolphin touch is where you're in water about thigh deep and get to hug and play with the dolphins. I don't really care that much about shopping. We seem to buy most things that we want when we want them. Our children say we are the absolute most difficult people in the world to buy for. The excursion is only 3-1/2 hours and we're in Ocho Rios for about 7 hours,so we can shop or go back to the ship, etc.

I've read a lot of wonderful things about Chankanaab park and did research on the internet and looked at pictures there. Looks really neat.
We're booking the private cabana on Half Moon Cay in advance just to be sure we get one, but the others we'll book with the concierge for the suites after we get on the ship. Often you can talk to people who've been there before and they can make suggestions.

See, that's where i have a problem. I don't usually drink tap water, with chlorine, etc. We have a well where we live and we take our water everywhere we go and we drink LOTS of it every day. But, I'm sure it will work out. I'll just have to drink lots of pina coladas.

and one more thing...margaritaville in jamaica got damaged by the hurricane so don't decide you can just go there if you miss it in florida. They've moved it to another beach club down the road, and they have a JB gift shop, but it's just not the same
ok, two things. I used to work in an outdoors store and you can buy mini-travel sized water filters...can't remember the name but REI or whatever big outdoor store is in your area should have something if you are willing to drink britta-type filtered water. |

Don't think we would try Margaritaville in Jamaica because I think it's in Montego and we'd have to go there from Ocho Rios where we dock. We'll stick with Key West. Wasn't it the first one anyway?
Mini water filter! Lianne you are my hero! Thanks for the tip! |

The more that I think of it, you could book only the exotic, unusual & new romantic treatments that one doesn't normally have. The massages are a must, but maybe something different than a regular relaxation one. And, I've read about the Aruvejda (sp) type facials (?) where they stream warm oil on your forehead. Maybe a scalp massage. If they have cranial sacral (sounds yucky) massage it's heavenly. When they do your head they hardly touch you but you can feel the warmth & energy whilst they rearrange whatever it is they say they do under your skull. It sounds incredibly gross but it has cured me of frequent migraine/stress headaches & can make me sleep like a baby it's so relaxing. My husband says it makes me loosey goosey. I know that you can only book what they have but maybe there are unique treatments on board.
Sounds like fun to me! |

They do have some different ones. There are several variations on a Japanese silk facial. In massages, besides the regular, they have hot stone massages.
I described what I'm doing first quite a few posts back. They first do a body brushing, then dribble oil over your body and do a salt mineral scrub, then apply their special sunless tanning product.
I was thinking of getting an airbrush tan before I go, but the salt scrub sounded so wonderful, I'm planning to do it the first day and then have a wonderful tan and beautiful skin for the rest of the cruise.
