My hair used to be really healthy. All of a sudden it seems to be really dry. I can curl it in the mornings and by the time I get to work it is as flat as a board! I do dye my hair but not a damaging color. I used to dye my hair all the time and it wouldn't bother it! I am trying to grow my hair out and I can't if it is going to look like this. It is already baby fine and this isn't helping. The products I use are Big Sexy hair volumizing shampoo followed with Redkin damage repair conditioner. Then I use "Dense" Thickining spray by Big Sexy Hair and blow dry. Then I curl on very low heat and sometimes on high ( either way, I get the same results). I can't go without blowdrying because my hair is too fine to. Somebody please help me figure out what is wrong with my hair! I am too young to have hair like this. Im only 19 Sad

Volumizing products tend to dry hair out, maybe you should switch to a moisturizing formula instead? Also, try to blowdry on low heat, or, if you can manage, let your hair air dry as often as you can.

Redken All Soft is a good moisturizing treatment for use 1-2 times a week.

What about some vitamin supplements, isn't it MSM that helped everyone grow healthy hair and eye lashes, I am sure there was a review a few months back.

I agree with Nemi that volumizing products can be very drying, but since your hair is very fine and thin, I’m guessing you need all the help you can get in making your hair have some volume instead of lying flat.

This is a really simple trick, but I’m always shocked by the number of women who don’t know about it: bend over and blow your hair dry upside down. This helps concentrate the airflow at the roots, thus providing instead volume. When your hair is nearly dry, stand back up straight and finishing styling as desired.

This little trick won’t completely replace the need to use volumizing products, but it will help cut down on the number of different products and/or the amount you need to use.

Another way is to add “concentrator” attachment to your blow dryer that looks like little fingers and you apply it directly to your hair and scalp. This attachment causes the air flow to be concentrated at the roots, again, helping to give much needed volume.

But remember, you absolutely, positively MUST use a product that provides thermal protection from heat styling. Some products already have this heat protection built in, so check your labels and see what they say. If they don’t mention thermal protection, then you need to use a separate product or else switch products to one that does already contain it.

As someone with very thin hair, I almost always dry my hair upside down first - considering its baby fine (and baby soft thankfully), every single hairdresser has instructed me to do just this.

Warning though..do not do it if not fully awake or on the morning after a big night out or a night of alcohol indulgence...have almost knocked myself out after losing balance and almost hitting my head on the side of the basin.. Laughing

I can laugh about it now...but I came seriously close to stitches and requiring vitamin e oil AGAIN!!! (Oh, had stitches a while ago after running into the corner of a door!!! FYI the vitamen E oil worked a treat and no more scar - but still no feeling in my eyebrow area Crying or Very sad ).

Thank you for the advice Carekate! I already blow dry my hair upside down, but my products don't contain thermal protection. The only product that I know of that does that is called, "Thermosilk". If you know some more please tell me.
Melissa, you sound lie me Laughing I'm such a clutz at times. Oh yeah, i heard that if you hold your stomach muscles in while you blow dry your hair bending over, that it tightens your abs. Little by little Wink

Thanks for that shoegal - always interested in ways to multitask!!! Tightening my stomach muscles whilst blowdrying my hair may also, in theory, help me hold myself steady.... Laughing

Oh, also there are heaps of products that offer heat protection - assuiming thats the same thing?? Wish I could remember them...I think Fudge one-shot was one, my Wella System Professional - Perfect Hair, also protects from "heated styling equipment". Although its nothing to write home about. I have tried a string of them, as my hair whilst fine, is also heavily bleached (it helps thicken it up also - my hair is so thin, you can see my scalp in places, and also the bleach burns off my psoriasis on my head....so I bleach for medical and cosmetic reasons), so point of story is that my hair is at risk of being sry, frizzy and breaking off. I have found that my goldwell avocado milk as an intensive conditioning treatment is also quite protective.

Condition your hair every time you wash for best results. You can apply a creme conditioner (these are my favs--shea butter, olive oil, Keracare Humecto Creme Conditioner, & Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream) to your hair before shampooing. This will help your hair retain moisture as it is being cleansed. You can also apply a hot oil or creme conditioner to your hair after shampooing.

2. If you hair is drying out. Mix 3/4 shampoo with 1/2 hot oil (my favs-olive oil, Jojoba Oil). Shake bottle. Wash hair. You hair is being cleansed but being moisturized at the same time.

3. My college roomie loved vitamin E oil. She would open ~5 capsules. Rub hands together and apply to wet hair. Then blowdry. Her hair always had a natural shine and looked healthy but not greasy.

This weekend, I tried unrefined coconut oil for a hot oil hair treatment and it worked great! I got mine it my local Whole Foods store, in the baking goods/spices/cooking oils aisle. Coconut oil is fabulous for severely dried skin, too.

Carekate we stock up on jars of coconut oil, I use it as an overnight hairmask, on my legs after shaving or as a nice moisturiser, great for dry feet as well, in the cooking we use it all the time, coconut oil also burns fat:
http://www.coconut-oil-uk.com/coconut-diet.html

I have started using one of those sun/sea/sand hair protecting spray before I blow dry my hair and this has really made a difference. I have not had a haircut since end of January Embarassed but my ends look fine Wink

Hi shoegal - My hair's been looking dry lately too -- I have it colored AND highlighted which takes a toll, especially with long hair. It gets worse in the summer as well.

I've tried many salon brands (B&B, Alterna, Halo, Phytologie, etc.), but one line has always been a standout: Goldwell Kerasilk. Now, they have an Ultra Rich formula which I'm going to try. The only reason I haven't stuck with it consistently is because the salons I go to never carry it and I have to order it from internet sites. But it's worth it and I'm switching back!!! No other line has made my hair so shiny, silky and even bouncy -- a difficult feat for long, fine, color-treated hair.

Hi shoegal - I've gotten stuff fromwww.beautysak.com and others. If you Google Goldwell Kerasilk, you'll get several different internet sellers. Prices have generally been comparable.

NOW, Kerasilk isn't sulfate-free. But my color hasn't faded at all from using products with sodium laurel sulfate, and I attribute any dryness I have to the fact that my hair is finely-textured and quite long. My ends aren't broken or frizzy either. I'm 53 and have to have my gray roots touched up every month. I have highlighting about 4 times a year. Any coloring will rough up the texture to an extent, and frankly I like a little of this effect because my hair is so fine that it used to be hard to style. But now that it's summer, I'm noticing some dryness. I just ordered some Goldwell Ultra Rich myself.

FYI - if you have an Ulta store near you, they carry the Goldwell line, and they frequently have BOGO or buy one, get one 1/2 off specials....personally, I totally dig Goldwell's Color & Highlight conditioner because it makes hair super-soft but doesn't have any silicones in it.
