I am 20 weeks pregnant and my OB is telling me have three servings of protein every day. Why is protein so important during pregnancy? How much protein do you need during pregnancy? What are the benefits? |

Are you kidding me? Sorry but protein is essential for your own body as well as your babies and if you are not eating sufficient amounts you are damaging your own body as well as that of your baby’s. Your protein needs are upped when you are pregnant because what you eat doesn’t just go to your body but babies as well. If you look at the human body, you will see that a lot of things like muscles for example need protein for every day metabolic functioning as well as for their basic structure. Protein is your baby’s body building blocks – i.e. it helps make up the baby’s body. If you think the baby in your stomach is growing all the time and it needs additional protein – and if there is a lack or a limit of protein it hampers the baby’s growth. Plus your body is also changing – for example in my pregnancy my boobs got way bigger and one of the things that my doctor advised me was additional protein – and it made a huge difference. Not only that but protein affects the growth of your baby’s brain – so if you are not eating enough you are damaging your baby’s body! |

Based from my experience I was advised to take protein, calcium, folic acid or folate and iron by my OB for a healthier pregnancy. |
