I have been reading a great deal on the topic of skin pH recently. Studies such as this suggesting that the healthy pH of skin is lower than the general average assumed of pH5.5 (more like 4.5 or perhaps lower) and that all skin care products should really be in that ballpark:
EDIT: I can't post a link. Google Premium Formulating at pH 4.5 How lower pH benefits the skin and formulations and the study should come up on cosmetics and toiletries dot com.
If one is taking the time to use low pH water to wash (yes, I managed to sort this) and of course a cleanser with an optimal pH, should we be worried that some of the powerhouse products of today are not in the 4.5 ball park? I am currently using Environ Inonzyme Range and Cellese AntiAGE system along with Bioderma SS. I've only got test strips so can't measure accurately but all these goodies check in around the pH6 mark, thereabouts. Not alkaline but a pretty drastic step away from the optimal pH of skin if you consider that the difference in 1 value of pH is considerably immense.
Do you think there is any concern on this front? Are we assaulting the skin barrier/acid mantle with years of applying products which are not in the pH4.5 range? I don't DIY and like to purchase hard hitting formulas online but is there any alternatives if you want these actives but fear pH issues over time? |
