I went looking for reviews on Epidermx II and only found reviews on the old, first generation version, so I thought I'd write a review about the second generation Epidermx II, along with the other naturderm products I've tried.
Most of you here on this board know me and know my backstory, but just in case you don't, here it is: I went off of hormonal birth control a few months back, and my face literally exploded. I was waking up to 5 or 6 new cystic blemishes every day. You don't have to be good at math to figure out that under those circumstance, my face was a minefield in just a matter of days. I saw a dermatologist and started aggressively treating my skin with tazorac, finacea, antibiotics, an androgen-blocker, and a BP face wash. Still, all that stuff took a while to kick in, and so by the time it finally did my creamy ivory skin was literally covered by a mask of red scars and marks. I never entirely stoppped breaking out, but my breakouts decreased from 5 or 6 a day to maybe 1 every few couple of days, which was a lot more manageable to me esp. when I used Best bath Store's acne serum. BUT!!! The red marks covering my face were literally SO dark and SO noticeable that before I could leave the house, even if I was just going to the grocery store, I had to spend AT LEAST 30 minutes sedulously covering my marks with concealer. Even after a solid half hour with the concealer my face didn't look perfect, but at least it looked passable, you know? Still, it was a total time drain and it got old in a hurry, day after day. Around this time a lady named Amy came to our board, offering free samples of two of her products, Epidermx and Chrysalyx. Both products were supposed to be good for scars, so I decided to give them a try. The samples were small so I didn't use them every day, but I enjoyed them enough (plus they didn't break me out, excellent!) that I decided to try the Transformation System which included full size bottles of Epidermx, Chrysalyx, Naturderm, and Triple Lavender Face Foam. I'll review each product individually below, but first I'd like to say that after using the Epidermx, Chrysalyx, and Lavender Face Foam every day for a week, I saw SUCH a tremendous improvement in not only my red marks but also my skin texture!!!!!!!!!!! Not only that, but since I started using these products daily, I have not had a SINGLE new blemish. My breakouts stopped entirely!!!!! As to why this is, I theorize that the Epidermx is helping my tazorac to penetrate and finally do its job adequately. Whatever the reason, I don't dread waking up anymore, and I certainly don't dread looking in the mirror. Instead, I'm excited to get out of bed and see how nice my skin looks! My skin has not healed 100% yet by any means, but now when I'm leaving the house, all I need is a thin layer of Alima on my face, then I go back with a concealer brush and add a little more Alima to my more pronounced red spots and I'm done in less than 5 minutes. Honestly I feel like I have my life back!!! So, if anyone else is struggling with acne scars, or is using a prescription acne med and STILL breaking out, these products could be just what you are looking for.
Here are my comments on the products individually:
Triple Lavender Face Foam ($32.95 for 6 oz)- I have been on the lookout for my HG cleanser, and this might just be it! I had to stop using the BP wash from my derm because it was just too irritating--- every time I washed my face my skin ended up red and angry. In contrast, this Face Foam is very gentle and soothing, and the lavender seems to actually help with redness, so after I wash my skin is clear and calm. It's a bit pricey, but because it comes out as a foam a little bit goes a long way, and the bottle is supposed to last 3 months with daily use. I didn't find it to be at all drying, however, since winter here in Cleveland is pretty brutal I've been only washing my face with the Face Foam at night, and then in the morning I've been just rinsing my face with water or giving it a quick spritz of Zenbiotic's Rinseless Cleanser. Oh, and did I mention the smell??? I love lavender, so it makes washing my face a truly relaxing ritual.
Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Extract, Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Extract, Ananas Sativas (Pineapple) Extract, Bromelain, Caricapapaya Caricacae (Papaya) Extract, Olefin Sulfonate*, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Natural, Sodium Chloride (Sea Salt), Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil, Methyl Paraben**, Propyl Paraben**. *Vegetable Derived ** Tree-bark Derived
EpidermxII ($19.95 for 1 oz)- This is easily my favorite product in the Naturderm lineup. I love the coconut scent, and I LOVE the silky, almost glassy feel my skin has after I use it. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin but miraculously I have not experience any irritation from this product and I've been using it every day. My acne scars are fading before my eyes, my make up is going on more smoothly, my tazorac is working more effciently, no more break outs.... I can't say enough good things about this scrub! I've already bought a second jar for back up because I can't imagine running out. Also I want to metion that the silver pot it comes in is gorgeous and looks great on my counter top. I also appreciate that it comes with a little scoop so I don't have to dip my paws down into the actual jar.^-^
Ingredients:
Purified Aqueous Extract of: Chamomilla Recutita Matricaria (Chamomile) Extract, Sambucus Canadensis (Elder Flowers), Rosa Canina (Rose Hips) Fruit Extract, Equiseturn Arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract and Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Extract, Alumina Crystals (Corundum, alpha, medical-grade), Organic Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Glucoside*, Glyceryl Stearate*, Glycerin*, Organic Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Natural, Xanthan Gum*, Rosa Canina (Rose Hips) Fruit Oil, Organic Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Essential Oil Blend: Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Organic Citrus Aurantium Dulcis, (Orange) Oil and Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Cocos Nuciferal (Coconut Extract), Mangifera Indica (Mango Extract), Methyl Paraben**, Propyl Paraben**. *Vegetable Derived ** Tree-bark Derived
Chrysalyx ($59.95 for 1 oz)- Way before Amy came to this forum with her samples, I had been eyeing different serums that contained ceramides, peptides, etc, because I saw it as a potential way of speeding up the skin-rejuvenation process and healing my scars more quickly. However, I never purchased any of those products because they all contained silicones, petrochemicals, etc, and since I was battling clogged pores I didn't want to add anything that might make my problem worse. Luckily, Chrysalyx contains all of the skin-rejuvenating ingredients I was looking at but none of the fillers I was trying to avoid, so it really is perfect for me. And just like all of the Naturderm products, it smells wonderful! It's a fine stand-alone moisturizer for oily-skinned ladies (but mist your face with something like Caudalie Grape Water first!), but drier-skinned ladies will probably want something on top of it for extra moisture. When the cold snap hit Cleveland my skin got really dehydrated overnight, but once I started putting a drop of Zenbiotic's Moisture Enrichment on over it, I was fine.
Ingredients:
Juniperus Communis (Juniper) Berries, Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm) Extract, Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Aqua (Steam Distilled Water), Infusion of Organic Herbs: Chamomilla Recutita Matricaria (Chamomile), Angelica Archangelica (Angelica), Althea Officinalis (Marsh Mallow), Organic Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycerin*, Glyceryl Stearate*, Cetearyl Alcohol*, Ceteareth-20*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Organic Theobroma Cacao (Coco) Butter, Organic Mangifera Indica (Certified Organic Mango Butter), Organic Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Butter, Ester-C, Panthenol (Vitamin B complex Factor), Ceramide-3, Retinol (Vitamin A), Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Natural, Dimethylethanolamine (DMAE), Essential Oil Bound Blend of: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oleoresin, Xanthan Gum*, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil, Methyl Paraben**, Propyl Paraben**. *Vegetable Derived ** Tree-bark Derived
Naturdermx ($69.95 for 1 oz)- I received this product in my Transformation System. I haven't yet tried it because I first wanted to test the first three products out on their own to see what kind of results I could get. However, I plan to add it in to my routine soon, so when I do I will give an update. I talked to Amy, and she thinks that the ingredients in it would also be beneficial for my scars, so I will definitely give a full report!
Ingredients:
qua (Purified Water), Vitis vinifera (Grapeseed Oil), Helianthus annus (Sunflower Seed Oil), Glyceryl Stearate*, Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, Cetearyl Glucoside*, Octanoic Acid (Caprylic Acid), Glycine, Glycerin*, Xanthan Gum*, d-alpha tocopherol (Vitamin E),
Rosemarinus officinalis (Rosemary Oleoresin), Phosphytidylcholine (Lecithin), Methyl Paraben**, Propyl Paraben**. *Vegetable Derived ** Tree-bark Derived
All of these products can be purchased atwww.greatnewskin.com. Right now they have a promotion where if you buy the "Transformation System" you can get all 4 full-size products for $109.95 which is significantly cheaper than buying them all separately. You can also get a trial pack of Epidermx II and Chrysalyx for $10.95 if you would like to try before you buy. I'd also like to add that Amy's customer service just can't be beat!! She has given me so much good advice that's not even related to her products--- for example, she suggested I try stopping using traditional powders and concealers and try to only use Alima for a while since it's more "pure", and it has definitely been helping! And since I'm an animal-lover, I LOVE that Naturderm products are 100% vegetarian with no animal ingredients.
All I can say is, I'm sooooo happy I decided to give these products a shot. I thought I'd be stuck with a face full of scars for YEARS, and now I see them fading already!!!! |

If there was an Oscar for "Best Product That Improved My Skin" then Epidermx-deux would win hands down. I LOVE it. I was going to do a review of both it and Chrysalyx (sp) but Liz beat me to it.
After trying so many products this year - some wayyyy expensive, some not, and just getting frustrated with the lack of results....enter Amy's offer for the sample of E2 and I've been hooked ever since. FINALLY, a product that got rid of those nasty little bumps I've been complaining about ad nauseum on here for the past year....was it the Vitamin C? was I using too many actives? was it hormonal? etc., etc., Ack. I think it was truly just a bunch of clogged pores and where no other exfoliation product could touch it, E2 delivered. So, it has become a staple. I love it. I believe it has also helped in lightening some light brown melasma patches on my cheeks.
I love the Chrysalyx as well. It's light, absorbs easily, smells yummy., and gives my skin a lovely hydrated feel. Smooth and silky.
My skincare routine is now frightfully easy.
At night 15-30 second E2 scrub
Then Remergent DNA repair (this also deserves high praise)
Then either Chrysalyx or I'm working on a sample of Silkia Camelilia Oil (jury's still out on that though).
A.M. -
Rinse face with Dove Soap (I know, I know, but it's been my favorite for years)
PSF Firming Facial Toner
SkinDoctors PotentC
Chrysalyx
Moisturizer
PSF Eye Cream
We'll see if that regimen takes me far into 2007. I hope so, b/c right now I'm really pleased (after hating my peri-menopausal skin for the past year and a half) with how things are looking.

You can get a Janson Beckett vit C serum for free if you buy the EpII + Chrysalyx + Naturdermx combo fromwww.goldportbeauty.com. The serum is really nice, very nice texture. I saw a glow already after just a few days. |

[i] Wow guys - that's what I get for being gone for 3 weeks!! The daughter (NY model) I originally developed Epidermx for nearly 7 years ago now just graduated as a Meteorologist and I was driving her out to her new job. Yes, she and the rest of our family is still dependent upon Epidermx II!
With respect Chzzzcake - I am the original developer of Epidermx. I am not, for legal reasons going to get into the goings on of what was done to me over the last several years. Your post sounds like the false propaganda that has been created by others with ill will. I developed Epidermx and I own the product.
There have been 6 years of scientific improvements and it was time to incorporate those improvements. I have lived in Epidermx - literally - noone is more familiar with the product than I am. Epidermx II is actually the exact same consistency as the original state of Epidermx right after it was manufactured. I am the only one who many times used the original product within days of manufacturing. The original manufacturer did not meet our quality control standards, and the original product was not hydrophilic balanced which is why over time that product thickened. NaturDerm products are made in a FDA inspected facility, each product is sterilized pre-fill and tamper proof sealed - the old maufacturer could not - and did not - enough said.
Epidermx II is not watery, nor is it watered down. People selling an expensive, inferior knock off of another person's years of effort would sure like you to believe it tho. The original Epidermx was recommended for daily use - I have been teaching that for 6 years now. Products that are hydrophilic balanced are more stable and are milder.
Epidermx II works in a different way - we removed the old heavy waxy preservatives that were in the original Epidermx - and research is showing the sodium and hydroxymethylglycinates are formaldehyde releasors. Behentrimonium methosulfate/methylsulfate can be an extreme allergenic. It was the waxes in the original formulation that created much of the "debris" from the "balling up" stage. Epidermx II is intended to be used as a quick scrub, it works more like a spa treatment. If you want to do the old massage you may but like a spa treatment you will have dead skin cells and crystals. We have looked at this under the microscope and it is easily seen.
We wanted to create a line to match what our very loyal, kind customers craved and couldn't find - Affordable, high-performance natural based anti-aging products that were multi-functional and streamlined their daily regimens, and from what I am hearing our customers are very happy. Bushy, I apologize but I have not had any calls or questions from you about crystals becoming blocked in skin pores. I have questioned our Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons who tell me this is not possible.
You all are just amazing people and are so very good to us and I really would like you to know how much you are appreciated. No skin care line is for everyone, and anyone who has ever spoken with me knows I work to help folks incorporate their favorites. Epidermx II will increase the effectiveness of any product applied after - our Plastic Surgeons in CA use it before they do chemical peels for this reason. This is why we recommend you be careful when you use acid based or retinoid products - The NaturDerm product line is perfectly pH balanced to your natural skin pH to promote skin health. It has long been demonstrated that acidic pH products increase the cellular turnover rate which is why the anti-aging products are acidic. This is why toners are not necessary with our products, even our cleansers are acidic pH balanced just like your skin, and that is rare. Yes, I use all of our products on my eyes - believe it or not, very carefully even Epidermx II - always have.
I believe products should be developed to meet multiple needs; it is about giving our customers the most for their money with the best products we can provide for skin health. I am a RN - my ex is a MD and grandpa is a Dermatologist - I didn't start out to do this - it has evolved and for some reason is what God has given me to do. I am about education and breaking the science down so people can understand what is what vs. the marketing fog for example that surrounds Argireline and the Acetyl Hexapeptide 3 products like Naturdermx. If you read my write up - I think you'll understand it easily. They basically prevent the zipper connection from happening that releases the neurotransmitter that causes the muscle to contract - the FDA likes it called facial relaxation. Yes, it works like gangbusters, if you aren't using them you are truly missing out on science's best advancement in years. Yes, there is a big difference between Argireline and pure AH3
The NaturDerm products are also silicone free. You can count the number of silicone free lines in the world on 2 hands. With my medical background, and the research I and many have done, I truly believe silicones are the single most detrimental ingredient in skin care products today for skin health. One of the most favorite is a type of cyclopentasiloxane - also called D5 - which is dry cleaning fluid. It is used as an emoillient in many high end products. When you hear anyone say you need to change product lines every once in awhile because your skin acclimates to them it is a sure bet you'll find silicones in the ones you are using. Why would you need to change products if products are made without something that is causing a problem?
If you want to use Epidermx II and then you apply other products, like makeup or sunscreen or lotions, you may notice your skin change, TAMgirl99 this may have been what you experienced. Sark you asked about combining Zenbiotic products - this is the only line I wouldn't recommend you to combine as I believe the philosophy of their skin care line is alkaline.
TheresaL, I actually thought by your initial early post you may be allergic to corundum crystal (same thing as alumina). I can only tell you that in 7 years including testing times, we have had 8 returns of Epidermx and they were all allergies to corundum crystal. By the way, there have been zero returns of Epidermx II. Years ago when my daughter was modeling in NYC, several of the agencies had me come out and do clinics with children; some 5 and 7 years old. This whole thing started because my daughter's agency said she couldn't compete in NYC without microdermabrasion - I was a single mom with 3 kids! Epidermx was born! Her agents started to pass it around - now we have customers FORD Elite Wilhelmina LA Models United Artists Womens CBS ABC NBC and FOX and TNT and sorry to have missed any as I know there are more - Dermatologists Plastic Surgeons Naturopaths
Estheticians - it is pretty amazing. 100% of all of them are seeing better results with Epidermx II and the NaturDerm products, and we are too.
I am looking to add a heavy duty moisturizer for our really dry customers, Silkia someone asked about - terrific folks - good friends really and I use it on my hair and nails - they carry our products and if you are dry you can put some Silkia on over the Chrysalyx or Naturdermx. Also a sunscreen, skin lightener and hydrosols. Years ago a MIT physicist taught me that using a mist of water on your face first will
maximize the performance of most products at the molecular level and it does try it - As a result we were actually the first to recommend using Epidermx on moist skin. He said at the molecular level the hydrogen and oxygen molecules create a magnetic state and actually bind to the molecules of hydrogen and oxygen that are in the inclusion pockets of the corundum crystal (which is actually ground up sapphires) they vibrate according to him and flatten the skin.
Theresa L - corundum has a natural astringent effect and yes, it is sharp. On the Mohs scale corundum is just under the diamond in hardness. TheresaL it has to be or it will not remove the dead hardened skin - it won't be able to. Your epidermis has a layer of compacted dead skin cells that has been keratinized which basically is like cement. Over the years this layer gets thicker and more compact - laser the knife and corundum that is about all that is going to impact it - the beauty of corundum is it is gentle safe for all skin types and can be done at home. It is in the small daily use - the cumulative effect truly where you see magic. I have done this for 7 years and my skin looks better than when I was 30, seriously.
The crystals we use are so pure and fine, they are the same ones we used for the Epidermx. They remind me of Caribbean sand. I do a quick 10-20 second "scrub" massage really - a night. Once or twice a week I do a 40-60 second scrub because after using the Chrysalyx the next morning it is like my face is sucked into a vacuum - and having just turned 50 that is a good thing! Sometimes our under 30 customers say "my face feels tight" I tell them to do a shorter scrub. Nor do you have to pummel your face, just a quick gentle massage- it really isn't scrubbing - it is just a shorter easier word!
It is truly wonderful, some people get confused and assign this to oh- you can't do a microdermabrasion a night - or too much scrubbing. Our Plastic Surgeons found this out and passed it on and they are right! A quick, gentle scrub - does two fabulous things - it gently removes the junk that daily falls into your pores and it deposits anything you put on your skin afterwards deeper into the skin for absorption. The rest of the skin care industry hasn't figured this one out yet -
Miranets, great pick up on the base difference - the production is far more than mixing crystals with water , infact most anti-aging products when you make your own you don't know the sophistication in the production of these products. There is a reason why cosmetic chemists have PhD's . Most of the ingredients if not combined at the right time, temp or method negate each other.
Yes, Epidermx and Epidermx II contain essential oils and are developed to leave a "film" or residue on your skin - many of the ingredients have an antiseptic property which is one of many reasons why so many of our customers for years with skin conditions like Rosacea and Psoriasis and Excema Scleroderma - so many have had such great results. TheresaL I haven't in 7 years had anyone tell me they have had broken capillaries from Epidermx - I have had many people with Rosacea tell me their broken capillaries have been improved. Sometimes people combine products, have other experiences, go outside in the cold, pick their skin and think it is because of a product - and I could be wrong too.
Someone else asked about what when - yes, Chrysalyx first, then Naturdermx. If you want to use your essential oils or other oils use them after Naturdermx. By the way both Chrysalyx and Naturdermx are patent pending products. You can massage them in one at a time separately til each is absorbed. I personally mist my face with water then take a pearl size amount of Chrysalyx on my fingertip blend it in my palm and apply it to my eyes, neck everything; then I do the same thing with the Naturdermx and massage them in together. Yes, my entire regimen in the am is less than one minute at night about 1 1/2 minutes.
Forgive me someone thought the Naturdermx wasn't as smooth to apply? I haven't found that, I do mist my face. It is a light serum.
Skincareaddicted, sorry the Chrysalyx didn't meet your standards; not every line or product is for everyone. I was and still am totally blown away by it - if you look at the "Just the Facts" tab on the GreatNewSkin you will find listings of microdermabrasion cream products the non botox products and products like Chrysalyx - anyway the price of these products is right in the middle of what is in the market place. Compare them to what they really are - non-silicone natural based products of like, or to other similar products with inferior ingredients or the most expensive and they are a real value. Chrysalyx to me is the ultimate mutipurpose product with DMAE Alpha- Lipoic Acid (ALA) Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Ellagic Acid (from the Pomegranate) Ceramide III Vitamin A (I am not a fan of retinoids as research clearly shows they long term dry out the skin) Vitamin E Ester C Shea Mango Avocado and Cocoa butter and I think 14 organic botannicals and I love the scent,it reminds me of fresh ginger and lemon grass. Sometimes I think what doesn't it do. Our R&D dept threw out 200 formulations and it took them 7 years it actually won the best new natural product in Europe award during that time.
These are high end products designed to deliver targeted results. We offer package deals that are half off retail. Chrysalyx is still my favorite and I have never used any product that has given me facial firming like using it with Epidermx II or E2 as alot of you have affectionately named it - good one guys - we call it that too:-)
So sorry this is dreadfully long, I tried to answer your pages of questions. Wishing now that I had access to online while I was gone! If any of you are from NJ near NYC - the driving is not fun, I was a nervous wreck. Hoping I answered you all and I thank you so very much - Amy |

OK I really wanted these products to work but they are a definite no go for me. They are the only new things I have added in and at first I thought it was just the chrysalx but its the epidermx too. Red bumps, acne flare ups, tight and flaky skin...and just when my skin had gotten better too (at least acne-wise). Oh well back to the drawing board...I just wish I could find something that works...sorry for the rant. |
Oh No! I have had all of the same reactions you describe above too, and I haven't been sure on what to do, ie. keep on using the E2 and hope it gets better eventually, or stop. Also, I'm a tazorac user, so I'm concerned about oversensitizing my skin. I have had increased blackheads, really bad flaking skin, especially around my mouth/chin, and the red bumps are all over the place...
Has anyone had the same issues, and do you know if they eventually subside and get better?
Thanks,
-Joanne |
Joanne, I'm a taz user too, and I haven't noticed any of the things you describe. (However, I do get redness and peeling when I use too much Taz, so then I have to take a break from it for a day or two, so you might want to give that a shot.) I would definitely recommend shooting Amy from Naturderm an email. She is so sweet and helpful, and she will be able to help you figure out what's causing these problems and if you should keep using the Naturderm stuff or not. HTH! |

I have been using the naturderm products for just over a month now. In the first week i had a couple of monster pimples come up on my cheeks where I don't usually get them. I put this down to purging and persevered. A week or so later my skin looked good, smoother and softer...except for my forehead. It was bumpy and clogged looking. After two weeks I stopped using the chrysalix as I wondered if this was the culprit. My forehead quickly settled down again.
I like the cleanser, but am not sure if I am wowed by it. I really like epidermx. I am just using once a day, but I think for my skin that is enough.
I had hoped this would help my acne, but I can;t say that it really has. I think I remember Liz saying that she thought the epidermx had improved the penetration of her taz. I guess I still need to find something that deals with my acne. I have read a lot about nanocyclic so have ordered that to try. If that does not work I am thinking retin a might be the way to go.
I will continue using the epidermx though as I appreciate having smoother skin, even if it is not yet pimple free.
Wish me luck..... |

I've used the Dr. Brandt and the ZO and I prefer the ZO, I think it's more gentle and effective. |

I have used the epidermx II and the ZO fat_swan. (Have not tried the others you mentioned). For me, the ZO was much better than the epidermx. ZO is not scratchy to my face, but the epidermx sure was; it felt very "rough" on my skin. |
Thank you Rileygirl! In other words, by rough, do you mean the Epidermx did a "deeper" clean? Or were the equally effective in that aspect? Thanks! |
No, I did not mean a "deeper clean" from Epidermx II. I meant rough as it (Epidermx II) felt like it was ripping my skin up! I should have probably said the Epidermx II was harsh on my skin. Hope that helps! |
