Nature's Therapy from Sally's. Even after leaving the conditioner on for an hour, it wasn't working as well as before. |
FYI - Nature's Therapy contains (non water-soluble) silicones so it's NOT meant (or shouldn't be, anyway) used as a daily conditioner because the 'cones coat the hair and prevent the moisturizing ingredients from penetrating.
I'm bad-mouthing NT because I use it myself and I love it, but it should only be used as a deep conditioning once per week or a couple times per month.
For a daily conditioner, you want to like for something that does NOT contain stuff like Dimethicone and other silicones. Everyone has their own tastes in what they're looking for in a daily conditioner, but my personal holy grail is Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Conditioning Balm because it's silicone-free and full of good stuff to nourish and moisturize.
One other thing to keep in mind: protein treatments like the coconut oil treatment should also NOT be used on a daily basis. Oil treatments nourish hair, like food nourishes our bodies. But we also need moisture (i.e.: water) to hydrate our bodies or we will die. Same thing with the hair -- everytime you do a protein treatment, you need to immediately followup with a super-moisturizing treatment to quench your hair's thirst.
So, while the difference in your hair is amazing after only one treatment with the coconut oil, please don't be tempted to do it more than 1-2 times per week otherwise your hair will still feel dry and straw-like because it's overdosing on protein but it's not getting any moisture. |

Has anybody else gone with the 'no poo' method?
I've quit using shampoo and conditioner entirely and my hair is just awesome! It's shiney, light and even my husband has commented on how nice it is now.
My grandmother used to say i was washing away "all the good", when i was a daily shampooer.
I wash with a little bit of baking soda and water, then rinse with a weak solution of apple cider vinegar and water. My scalp feels better than I can remember it ever feeling.
I love it so much I've decided to quit using 'products' to cover my grey. Yesterday I covered my grey with Wheat Blonde Henna and - OMG my hair is just gorgeous today!
I'll never go back to using shampoo. It dries your hair so you HAVE to use conditioner. It's all an unnecessary cycl. From the research I've done, I believe all the hair problems - dry, frizzy, etc., are CAUSED by using 'products'.
Between cleanings (which are naturally occurring less frequently about twice a week now), for a little extra conditioning, I spray my hair with water to which a few drops of lavender and rosemary essential oils have been added. This morning I took a little Rosemary EO and massaged it all over my scalp using my finger tips.
The No Poo method is highly recommended for people with very curly hair and apparently works very well for black women who have a hard time with dry hair.
If you want to learn more, just google no poo method or something similar.
Good information can be found at: motowngirl (dot) com
Herbs for Hair:
Burdock: root helps prevent dandruff
Catmint: leaves encourage hair growth and soothes scalp irritations
Chamomile: flowers soften and lighten hair
Flannel Mullein: lightens hair
Goosegrass: tonic and cleansing, helps prevent dandruff
Henna: red hair dye and conditioner
Horsetail: non-fertile stems and branches strengthens the hair
Lavender: antiseptic, antibiotic, stimulates hair growth, and degreases
Lime: flowers clean and softens
Marigold: lightens hair color
Nasturtium: for hair growth
Parsley: enriches hair color and gives a nice luster
Rosemary: tonic and conditioner, one of the best herbs to use, gives luster and body, also slightly darkens the hair. (This is good to use if you notice your hair lightening due to baking soda use.)
Rhubarb: the root makes a yellow hair dye
Sage: tonic and conditioning, darkens the hair
Southernwood: encourages hair growth and helps prevent dandruff
Stinging Nettle: tonic and conditioning and helps prevent dandruff
Witch Hazel: leaves and bark are astringent and cleanses oily hair
It takes a little adjusting and there can be a few bad days while your hair and scalp adjust to no-poo, but it's well worth it in the long run!
I didn't have any adjustment time because I didn't shampoo daily, so my scalp didn't react to no pooing by producing oil at an accelerated rate. |
