I have not visited EDS for long time, after trying so many Western methods on anti-aging, I have switched to learn traditional Chinese medicine and food therapy on anti-aging and it works wonderful!

I read tons of books, but I am still a beginner and hope can share more tips with you in near future.

I also feel the incredible effect of chinese medicine on the health and beauty of my face as well as the health and well-being of my body..since I do believe that our internal organs and the quality of the energy, or Chi, that flows through them is intimately related to our external looks, ie. quality and firmness of our facial tissues, etc.

i've beena vegan for 39 years, and simply let my practitioner know not to use any animal parts in my herbal remedies

I am Chinese. Eating endanger animal.... it seems most non-Chinese people have believed that Chinese are very cruel.

Let me share what I have done : Obagi, Roller, LED, Facial exercise bu Loulou, Vitamin and supplement.

Chinese food therapy are usually made according to the person's individual condition in relation to TCM theory. The "five flavors" indicate what function various types of food play in the body. In the past, I follow the westerner diet and eat lots of lots of vegetables. Eating vegetables is good but you first have to find out your body condition, my body is actually too cold (most women are cold) and should eat meat, plus selected vegetables (most veggies are OK, but some squash and vegetables are no good for women).

This is what I am eating:

1. Breakfast : black rice porridge (recipe can be provided if anyone is interested)
2. Special pudding : one teaspoon in the morning, one teaspoon before bed-time. (The pudding is made by black sesames, walnut, Chinese red dates, rock sugar, deer skin and wine)

Exercise:
walking with your knees, 15 mins a day. This is an amazing exercise for blood circulation and reduce fat around your fat legs.

Facial exercise:
Use your 10 fingers to gently hit all over your face and head(not massage, but not beat)

There are a list of food and you should avoid:
Watermelon, banana and sugar cane (too cold for the body)

I will share more when I have time. Do the above work? YES YES YES

The theory of the facial exercise is long and not easy for me to explain - but it helps to reduce wrinkles and spots etc if you are hitting on the correct position. Explain more the next time.

For beauty treatments, of course. I was thinking of the medicine aspect of it.
However upon more consideration I realise I shouldn't have said that. The bear farms over there are horrific, and NO REASON is a good reason to hurt any being like that. I don't care if it could cure world hunger.
So yes I do take back that statement.

There are positives and negatives to most everything. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a very vast field. Shiatsu, acupuncture, herbal remedies, and breathing/relaxation remedies fall into this category. Surely one can say they practice Chinese medicine without labeling themself as an animal abuser. The world just isn't that black and white in my opinion.

I'll happily play the devils advocate and ask you what impact on the environment and our animal co-inhabitants of earth do you think unnecessarily prescribed pharmaceuticals have? I believe strongly in protecting endangered animals and would never support the killing of endangered species. Am I going to blacklist all forms of TCM? No, no I'm not. I'm going to educate myself on what I consume or use.

Here are what I found really help me:

1. To reduce fat thighs : walk with my knees for 15 minutes/day.

2. Whitening the skin, dimishing wrinkles, smoothing the skin : cleanse my face with rice water, do deep breathing in rice water for 5 minutes/day.

3. Beautiful complexion without using foundation : stop eating the wrong food. Only eat the food which will warm-up the body, e.g.black rice, red dates, black sesames etc. the list is long but guarantee they are all the common food you can buy from most supermarket.

4. Beautiful shinning hair : comb 300 times/day.

5. reduce wrinkles around the eyes : pressing on certain spots around the eyes. Also helps to get rid of dark circles.

6. Shrinken breast due to breast-feeding/aging - breath and posing for breathing. It works wonder, once a day for 10 mins at 8:00 pm.

7. Facial massage - gentl hitting the face with 10 fingers for 10-15 mins a day. I found it is even better than Lou Lou and BQ.

8. Special facial massage - 5 mins/day in morning and evening, it claims you will look 10 years younger immediately. I am sure you won't believe it, but the techniques are targeting to shape your muscle up, I won't say I look 10 years younger immediately, but I did take before/after massaging pics, I look much better in the after picture.

9. As we are women, we always have to remember to keep our body warm. Blow dry your hair right after washing your hair. Don't eat cold and cool food (e.g. banana, watermelon, etc the list is long) I am lucky that I don't like cold drinks, ice water etc. it actually hurts our body a lot.

Even though I believe in TCM and have a first hand experience with it one has to be very careful with it.

I had seen one of the very well known practitioner in NYC for various problems - and with some she had helped me quite a bit - like chronic sinusitis, ear infections, etc. Nothing worked for my knee (trauma caused arthritis). And when she tried to address the Hormone Imbalance - I ended up with huge ovarian cysts and needed 2-hour surgery to remove them and save the ovaries.

Also, it is a very well established fact unfortunately that today most of the Chinese herbs and herbal products are heavily contaminated (containing mercury, arsenic, etc. - there is a separate group of scientists/doctors at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC that examines various supplements and their safety).

After wasting time and money with various alternative practitioners and getting at best nothing in return and at worst ending up in a hospital (happened twice to me) - I had finally found the one whom I trust - Dr. Bob Marshall.

So no more TCM for me.

HTH

There have been studies equally derisive of western medicine and its practices. And don't overlook the fact that our (U.S.) medical costs are high largely because so many doctors have been (justifiably) sued for malpractice!

I earlier mentioned a good friend who became a huge advocate of TCM after consulting a variety of specialists over her son's serious condition. Even though she took him to some heavy hitters at the big name Los Angeles institutions, he was not diagnosed correctly or effectively treated until they visited a Chinese doctor. From her accounts, Dr. Chin has been a miracle worker for her family. That's just an anecdotal experience, of course, not scientific proof, but many people who have had no success with western medicine have had better experiences with Chinese medicine.

I believe that many traditional western doctors are disease oriented rather than wellness focused. I am not surprised that TCM feels threatening to them. (It amuses me that the quote about acupuncture comes from a psychiatrist -- couldn't they at least try to recruit a neurologist to debunk TCM claims? What does a shrink know!)

Probably the major knock against Chinese medicine is that it may not be as highly regulated in most states as traditional western medicine, and so quacks can indeed purport to be medical caregivers. But the same has been true, at least in my state, for therapists.

Western medicine has a lot to learn from TCM. Neither kind of medicine has all the answers -- both are just pieces of a large puzzle that is slowly being constructed.

Grey hair is due to poor circulation, you have to use a big brush to comb your hair and scalp. Try to comb until your scalp is hot, about 50-60 times. (book said 300 times, I think that is quite impossible for everyone). My scalp is very greasy after combing, so I usually comb before shampooing.

I used to have very ugly, dry hair, I can never keep long straight hair because my hair will split once it is reaching my shoulder.

In the past, I only combed my hair once in the morning and that's it! I always envy the girls with long hair. I only started to brush hair few years ago, I wish I wish I should know it when I was 20! Anyway, now is another story, I can hardly find a split end, I don't have white hair (maybe less than 10!) My hair is shinny. I don't do hair mask, not even use hair conditioner.

Ladies (and gents), I found this on another site. Thought maybe it would interest some people.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes how we eat our food is also very important. It is very common these days to eat in our car on the way to work, eat at our desk while working or have the television on while eating, this weakens our digestive energy.

It is important to

* Sit down to eat
* Chew food well
* Pay attention to eating, turn off the television, get away from the work desk
* Eat organically and locally
* Eat seasonally
* Do not skip meals

Traditional Chinese medicine views the stomach and spleen as a cooking pot that breaks down the food that is eaten and turns it into energy and blood for the body. The stomach is the cauldron and the spleen is the digestive fire that warms up the pot. The stomach cooks and breaks down the food, sending the pure part of the food to the spleen to be distributed to the rest of the body and eliminating the waste as feces and urine. It is important to maintain this digestive fire and too many cold and raw foods can put out the digestive fire, weakening and slowing the digestive system.
Dampness

The digestive system is slowed down is by foods that are damp in nature; this dampness can slow down the transformation of clear energy and blood.

Some symptoms of dampness in the body are

* fatigue, body heaviness, sluggishness
* excess weight
* cysts, tumours
* yeast infections
* bloating and gas
* unclear thinking
* chronic sinus infections
* cloudy urine
* foul smelling stools
* thick tongue coating

Foods to Avoid or Limit

* dairy
* wheat
* cold drinks
* fruit juice
* processed foods
* refined flour, pastry, pasta, breads
* cold raw foods
* refined sugar and sugar substitutes
* coffee, alcohol
* deep fried foods
* peanuts and peanut butter
* bananas, avocado

Foods to Add

* organic lightly cooked vegetables, corn, celery, watercress, turnip, pumpkin, alfalfa sprouts, button mushrooms, radish, caper
* brown rice, barley, amaranth, rye, oats
* legumes, kidney beans, adzuki beans, lentils
* small amount of lean organic meat, poultry and fish, tuna
* small amount of whole fruits, lemon
* sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
* seaweed, kelp
* green tea, jasmine tea, raspberry leaf tea

Yang Deficiency

The yang energy is responsible for warming and activating bodily functions. Some symptoms of yang deficiency include

* sensation of coldness
* cold hands and feet
* frequent pale urination
* low libido
* low back pain or weakness
* pre menstrual lower back pain
* profuse cervical fluid
* low basal body temperatures
* shortened luteal phase

Foods to Avoid

* cold food and liquids
* raw foods especially in the fall and winter
* damp producing foods as seen above

Foods to Add to Tonify Yang

* raspberry, peach, strawberry, cherry
* walnut, chestnuts, pine nuts, pistachios
* lamb, venison
* lobster, mussels, prawns, shrimp, trout
* black pepper, cinnamon bark, clove, dill, fennel, garlic, ginger, peppermint, rosemary, sage, turmeric, thyme, horseradish, cayenne, nutmeg
* chai tea, jasmine tea

Yin Deficiency

The yin is responsible for moistening and cooling. When the yin is depleted the body begins to show signs of heating up. Some symptoms of yin deficiency include

* hot flashes
* night sweats
* ringing in the ears
* prematurely grey hair
* lower back pain
* scanty cervical fluid
* shortened menstrual cycle

Foods to Avoid

* hot spicy foods
* stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, recreational drugs
* sugar

Foods to Add to Tonify Yin

* barley, millet
* adzuki beans, kidney beans, black beans, black soya beans, mung beans
* beef, pork, duck, oyster, clam, crab, octopus, fish
* sesame seeds, black sesame seeds and walnut
* asparagus, artichoke, pea, potato, seaweed, sweet potato, yam, tomato
* egg
* apple, pear, pomegranate, watermelon, banana, avocado

Critic, by walking around on your knees, do mean that literally? You walk around on your knees for 15 minutes?

What is rice water? Is that something you buy or something you make?

I have a sauna in my house. Do you think it's OK to sit in the sauna at night in place of the foot bath?

Thank you, Critic for all of your information. It's all fascinating to me.

Tonia,
Here is a link to view knee walking:
http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/l84U-qiviYE/

I don't have time to do, I wish can start again.

Rice water : as we eat rice everything, we will first briefly wash the rice with water, so keep those water to use for your face.

From my understanding, you can't do sauna and foot bath together.

I can explain this, remember when we were 20+, no matter how much we ate, we were still in pretty good shape? Of course, the reason is we are young, metabloisum etc. very immportant reason is we were in good health, in TCM, we have enough blood and qi in the body to help us move and burn the food, change to engery.

However, when we are aging, our body change to damp, cold and wet (check your body temp and compare with a kid, kid is usually 1-2 degree higher than adults).

For those who need to lose weight, in general they have a damper body than healthy one, they don't have enough blood to burn the food etc. everything store in the body, so even they eat very litte, they still gain weight.

Thank you, critic. So, we need to reduce the dampness by eating very healthy, like the foods you listed?

Critic, what do you do if you find yourself with needing to reduce dampness, but you also seem to have a yang deficiency? Do you focus on 1 first and then the other?

Rileygirl, the fact is most women are Yang deficiency. In Chinese Yin = women, Yang (Sun) = men. The proper/medical term for women sex organ is Yin, for men is Yang. If someone is dead, we will say he is now living in the land of Yin. If someone is always full of strength and energy, we will say he has enough "yang qi'. When we say someone is full of 'yin qi', it it almost like he is being attached to ghost or devil.

To answer your question, first focus on reducing the dampness, and in-corporate and supplement the food that can boost on the Yang side.

Hi this is a great thread! I also believe in TCM but I end up falling off the wagon most of the time because I find it time consuming and so hard to adjust to the lifestyle changes.

I've been doing the face and brow tapping everyday now for a couple years, and it really helps in releasing tension. I have pretty bad migraines and TMJ pain from teeth grinding and clenching, and this helps in releasing some of the tightness in the muscles. Sometimes I do it several times a day!

For those of you who do the foot bath, I'd like to share with you what my TCM doctors have warned me. It is crucial that when you're sweating, you must continuously wipe off the sweat with a dry cloth or towel, or else your body can re-absorb the expelled damp and absorb extra wind (cold air) as well. You must not bathe in the 3 hours after sweating because the water/damp can re-enter your body. Also, you must take care not to be in A/C while sweating because the wind can enter your body in this fragile state.

HTH! Very Happy
