Today, I received an advert for L'Oreal "Lash Boosting Serum" in the paper. It is a $5.00 off coupon for the product which promises to "Maximize Your Lash Appearance and Minimize Lash Loss when removing makeup". The headline says "Give us 4 weeks...You'll see more lashes!" Really?! It also claims: "You'll see more Lashes" and "Bare Lashes appear multiplied".
What does all this mean? I did some research on the product and found that it is selling between $12 and $15 for a small vial. That seems low priced in the category. So, I had a look at the ingredients list.
AQUA / WATER / EAU, ALCOHOL DENAT., GLYCERIN, HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE, PHENOXYETHANOL, PANTHENOL, POLYSORBATE 21, MADECASSOSIDE, ACRYLAMIDE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYLTAURATE COPOLYMER, METHYLPARABEN, OCTYLDODECANOL, ISOHEXADECANE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, ARGININE, SERINE, CITRIC ACID, GLUTAMIC ACID, POLYSORBATE 80, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, 2-OLEAMIDO-1,3-OCTADECANEDIOL
The first ingredient is loaded the most, and it is water. Second ingredient is Alcohol Denatured. Now I don't know about you, but I don't want alcohol near my eyes. It will almost assuredly lead to stinging or irritation. Hydroxyethylcellulose is a "thickener" in this case, and Phenoxyethanol is a mild preservative. Both of these are usually loaded at 1% or less in a formula. So, this is approximately the "1% line". All the ingredients added below those two are probably loaded at 1% or less. So, the actives (arginine, etc) are loaded in very small amounts in this formula.
Essentially, this formula is just a hair conditioner. They make it sound like the product will give "more lashes".... "multiplied"... "thicker", etc. In reality, the results from this product would probably be hard to notice, and it won't induce any lash lengthening effects at all.
It is interesting to see how marketing can lead consumer's perception about what a product can do versus will do.
